Tuesday in Easter week

Easter is the most important Christian holiday. Christians celebrate
based on their faith that Jesus rose from the dead.

Invitation

May I ask for your attention for
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
It is not inconceivable that some of the listeners now listening to Peter did not see any harm in Pontius Pilate’s condemnation of Jesus. Peter calls for an examination of conscience. It is the Lord himself who has been crucified! This wording is special. Before, Jesus was a special man for the disciples, a prophet. The resurrection was a turning point: Jesus was indeed the Lord! Then it dawns on the listeners, and they wonder how things could have come to this. It is the same in our lives: we sometimes do evil and only realise afterwards what that has meant for others. The Lord’s Easter offers us the chance to become aware of these sins, but also to realise how incredibly great Jesus’ love is that He paid such a high price for us.

FIRST READING                   Acts 2:36-41
‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ.’

From the Acts of the Apostles

On the day of Pentecost Peter said to the Jews:
“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this:
God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.””
When they heard this, they were deeply moved
and said to Peter and the other apostles:
‘What shall we do, men and brethren?’
Peter replied:
“Repent
and be baptised every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins:
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
‘For the promise is for you,
your children
and all who are far off,
as many as the Lord our God will call.‘
With many other words he bore witness
and exhorted them,
’Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
Those who accepted his word were baptised
so that on that day about three thousand people joined.

INTERLUDIUM                     Ps. 33(32), 4-5, 18-19, 20, 22

The earth is full of the Lord’s kindness.
or: Alleluia. The word of the Lord is true
and all he does is trustworthy.
He loves righteousness and justice,
the earth is full of his kindness. It is God who guards his servants,
those who trust in his love.
That he will save them from death,
that he will feed them in famine. Therefore our hearts trust in the Lord,
he is our shield and helper.
So, Lord, give us your mercy,
as we trust in you.

ALLELUIA                      Psalm 118(117):24
Alleluia.
This is the day the Lord has made,
we will celebrate it in joy.
Alleluia.

SEQUENCE
Let us praise the Easter Lamb,
honour the Lamb of God with sacrifices.
Yes, the Lamb saves the sheep,
Christ through his innocence
brings us poor sinners to the Father.
Death and life, oh miracle,
must fight together.
He who died, He lives, He is our King.
Tell us, Mary,
what is it that you have seen?
Christ’s tomb was empty,
the glory of Him who is risen,
angels as witnesses,
the napkin and the shroud.
My hope, my living Christ!
Behold, He goes before you to Galilee.
Truly Christ is risen: He has risen from the dead.
O King, our Hero, grant us peace. Alleluia.

GOSPEL                   John 20:11-18
I have seen the Lord, and he told me these things.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time Mary was outside the tomb crying.
And as she wept, she bent over to look inside
and saw where the body of Jesus had been lying
and how two angels in white were sitting
one at the head and one at the foot.
They spoke to her:
‘Woman, why are you weeping?’
She replied:
‘They have taken away my Lord
and I do not know where they have laid Him.’
When she had said this, she turned around
and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her:
‘Woman, why are you weeping?
‘Whom are you looking for?’
Thinking that it was the gardener, she said,
‘Sir, if you carried him away,
tell me where you laid him,
and I will take him.’
Jesus said to her,
‘Mary!’
She turned and said to him in Hebrew,
‘Rabboni!‘
which means “Teacher”.
Then Jesus said to her:
’Do not hold on to me
because I have not yet ascended to the Father.
But go to my brothers and say to them:
I am ascending to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.”
Mary of Magdala went and told the disciples
that she had seen the Lord,
and what He had said to her.

War and the death penalty
255. Two extreme situations can appear as a
solution in particularly dramatic circumstances without warning
that they are false answers, which do not solve the problems they
pretend to overcome, and which ultimately, in the structure of
national and global society, only add new factors of
destruction. These are war and the death penalty.
