Thursday in the Easterweek

The Lord has truly risen

Invitation

May I ask your attention for
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
In each of the four gospels, Jesus appears to the group of disciples. It is not so easy to believe in the resurrection, even his own disciples, who experienced everything up close, have their doubts. Jesus’ appearances are intended to convince them time and again, but from now on they also take on an extra dimension, namely that of the mission of his followers. They will gather people around the word and the bread; people who are astonished or speechless, people who have doubts, people who hope or despair. Thus will the young Church set out, listening to the Scriptures and gathering around the bread and the cup. In its midst, the Lord will come and greet them: ‘Peace be with you’, as he does today.

FIRST READING:               Acts 3:11-26
You have killed, you have killed the Prince of life. But God raised him from the dead.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days, as the lame man who was healed
was clinging to Peter and John,
all the people were amazed and ran together
in Solomon’s Colonnade.
When Peter saw this, he addressed the people:
‘Men of Israel,
why are you surprised at this?
Why do you stare at us
as if by our own power or piety
we had made this man walk?
’The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
the God of our fathers
has glorified his servant Jesus,
whom you handed over
and denied in the presence of Pilate
though he had decided
to release him.
‘But you denied the Holy and Righteous One
and asked that a murderer be released.
’You killed, instead, the Prince of life.
‘But God raised him from the dead;
of this we are witnesses.
“Because of his faith in his Name
his Name has given power
to this man, whom you see and know. ’The faith
given to him by him
has given the man this perfect health
in full view of you all.
‘But I know, brothers,
that you acted in ignorance,
as did your rulers.
‘But what God had foretold
through all the prophets,
that the Messiah would die,
He has thus fulfilled.
’Repent, then, and be converted,
that your sins may be blotted out,
and that the Lord’s
time of favour may come
and He will send you Jesus
who was foreordained as Messiah for you.
‘Heaven had to receive him
until the time of the restoration of all things,
of which God spoke
through his holy prophets of old.
’Moses said:
A prophet like me
will cause the Lord our God to rise up for you
from among your brothers.
‘You must listen to him
in everything he tells you,
and anyone who does not listen to the prophet
will be cut off from the people.
’And all the prophets,
all who spoke from Samuel and those who followed,
have also prophesied for these last days.
‘You are the sons of the prophets
and of the covenant that God made with your fathers
when He said to Abraham:
In your seed
all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
“For you first
God has raised up His servant
and sent Him to bless you
by turning each of you from your wickedness.

INTERLUDIUM                  Ps. 8, 2a, 5, 6-7, 8-9

Lord, our Lord,
how awesome is your Name on earth!
Ah, what is man that you should notice him,
the son of man that you should care for him? You made him not much less than an angel,
clothed him with beauty and splendour;
all your creation is subject to him,
everything has been placed at his feet: cattle and sheep in every direction,
also the wild animals in the fields;
birds in the air and fish in the sea,
everything that swims in the oceans.
ALLELUIA                Ps. 118(117), 24
Alleluia.
This is the day the Lord has made,
we will celebrate it in joy.
Alleluia.

SEQUENCE

Let us praise the Easter Lamb,
honour the Lamb of God with sacrifices.
Yes, the Lamb saves the sheep,
Christ through his innocence
brings us poor sinners to the Father.
Death and life, oh miracle,
must fight together.
He who died, He lives, He is our King.
Tell us, Mary,
what is it that you have seen?
The tomb of Christ that was empty,
the glory of Him who has risen,
angels as witnesses,
the sweat cloth and the shroud.
My hope, my living Christ!
Behold, He goes before you to Galilee.
Truly Christ has risen: He has risen from the dead.
O King, our Hero, grant us peace. Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  Lk. 24, 35-48
So the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.

From the holy gospel according to
Luke

At that time the disciples told what had happened on the way
and how Jesus was recognised by them
the breaking of bread.
While they were talking about this
suddenly he himself stood among them
and said to them,
‘Peace be with you.’
In their bewilderment and fright they thought they were seeing a ghost.
But he said to them,
‘Why are you so surprised
and why do doubts arise in your hearts ?
’Look at my hands and feet:
It is I myself.
‘Touch me and see
A ghost does not have flesh and bones
As you can see I have.’
And after he said this
He showed them his hands and feet.
They were so overjoyed and amazed they could not believe their eyes
He said to them:
“Have you anything to eat here?’
They handed Him a piece of broiled fish;
He took it and ate it in front of them.
He spoke to them:
“These are my words,
which I spoke to you when I was still with you:
Everything must be fulfilled
that is written about me in the Law of Moses,
in the prophets and in the psalms.’
Then he opened their minds
to understand the Scriptures.
He told them:
“This is what the Scriptures say about the Messiah’s suffering and death
and his rising from the dead on the third day,
about the proclamation of repentance and the forgiveness of sins
in his name to all nations.
‘You must bear witness to all of this, beginning in Jerusalem.
‘That is why I am sending you what my Father promised;
so stay in the city
until you have been strengthened by power from on high.’
Then He led them out as far as Bethany,
raised His hands and blessed them.
And while he blessed them he parted from them
and was carried up into heaven.
They worshipped him
and returned with great joy to Jerusalem.
They were constantly in the temple
and they glorified God.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCIS

On fraternity and social friendship

257. Since the conditions for the outbreak of wars
are once again increasing, I want to reiterate that ‘war is
the negation of all rights and a dramatic assault on the environment.
If one wants authentic integral human development for all,
it is necessary to tirelessly continue the efforts to avoid war between
nations and peoples.
To that end, we must guarantee the undisputed rule of law and
tirelessly call for negotiation, mediation and
arbitration, as proposed by the Charter of the United Nations, which
is a truly fundamental legal norm. I would like to point out that the 75 years of
the United Nations and the experience of the first 20 years of this millennium
show that full application of international standards
is truly effective and that non-compliance is harmful. When
the Charter of the United Nations is applied transparently and sincerely,
it is a mandatory point of reference for justice and a means
of achieving peace. But that requires that unlawful intentions
are not masked and the private interests of a country or of a
group are not placed above the general welfare of the world. If
the norm is considered an instrument to be used
when it proves favourable, and that one avoids the norm
when it does not, uncontrollable forces are unleashed that
cause serious damage to societies, the weakest, brotherhood, the environment and
cultural heritage with irreparable losses
for the world community.
