Consideration

‘Unfathomable depth, eternal God, Thou art a fire that burns always and does not run out. Thou with Thy warmth consumes every self-love of the soul. Thou art the fire that takes away every cold, and Thou enlightenest the spirits with Thy light, with that light by which Thou hast made me know Thy truth. Lord, You call me to come to You, and I come to You, certainly not on account of my merits, but only thanks to Your mercy.

(Catherine of Siena, Dialogue on Divine Providence)

FIRST READING                      1 Jn 1:5-2:2

Christ’s blood cleanses us from every sin.

From the first letter of the holy apostle John

Friends,
This is the message we have heard from Christ
and pass on to you :
God is light ,
and there is no trace of darkness in Him.
If we claim to be partakers of His life
while our ways are dark
we lie in word and deed.
But if we walk in the light ,
– as He Himself is in the light –
then we share in each other’s life,
while the blood of His Son Jesus cleanses us from every sin.
If we claim to be without sin
we deceive ourselves
and the truth does not dwell in us.
If we confess our sins,
He is so faithful and merciful
that He forgives our sins
and cleanses us from all evil.
But if we say that we have committed no sin
we make Him a liar ;
then His word does not dwell in us.
Children,
I write to you
with the intention that ye should not sin.
But even if someone were to sin :
We have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ,
who is totally sinless,
who makes up for all our sins
and not only ours but those of the whole world.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 103(102), 1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 13-14, 17-18a

Glorify, my soul, the Lord.

Glorify, my soul, the Lord,
His holy Name from the depths of your being!
Glorify, my soul, the Lord,
forget not his benefits !
It is He who forgives you your debts,
who heals thee from thy afflictions.
It is He who saves thee from destruction,
who surrounds you with his favour and mercy.
The Lord is merciful and benevolent,
longsuffering and kind.
He does not continually keep reproaching,
He is not forever wroth.
As much as a father loves his children ,
so much does the Lord love His servants.
Surely He knows what He made man from,
He remembers that we are but dust.
But God’s mercy endures forever and ever,
righteous is He to generation after generation,
for all who faithfully keep His covenant.

GOSPEL               Mt 11:25-30

These things hast Thou hidden
from the wise and prudent,
but revealed to children.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

At that time Jesus spoke :
‘I praise Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because Thou hast hidden these things
From the wise and prudent ,
but have revealed them to children.
‘Yes, Father, so it has pleased Thee.
‘All things have been given to Me by My Father.
‘No one knows the Son unless the Father,
and no one knows the Father unless the Son
and he to whom the Son will reveal Him.
‘Come to Me all
who are exhausted and weighed down by burdens ,
and I will give you rest and relief.
‘Take My yoke on your shoulders and learn from Me :
I am meek and lowly in heart;
and ye shall find rest for your souls,
for My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.’

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On brotherhood and social friendship

262. Nor will standards be sufficient, if it is thought that the
solution to current problems is to deter others
through fear, by threatening them with the use of nuclear
chemical or biological weapons. After all, ‘if one is able to identify the main
threats to peace and security with their many dimensions in this
multipolar world of the 21st century, such as, for example, terrorism
asymmetric conflicts, information security, environmental problems,
poverty, then no few doubts arise regarding
the inadequacy of the nuclear deterrent to respond effectively to those
challenges. Such concerns intensify when we consider
consider the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences
resulting from any use of nuclear weapons with devastating
uncontrollable effects in time and space. […] We must also
question how sustainable an equilibrium based on fear is,
when it actually tends to increase fear and undermine relationships
of trust between peoples. International peace and
stability cannot be based on a false sense of security,
on the threat of mutual destruction or total annihilation, on the
simple maintenance of a balance of power. […] In this context
the ultimate goal of the total elimination of nuclear
weapons becomes both a challenge and a moral and humanitarian imperative.
[…] Increasing interdependence and globalisation
mean that any response we make to the threat of nuclear
weapons must be collectively agreed, based on mutual
trust. The latter can only be built through a dialogue
that is genuinely focused on the common good and
not on protecting veiled and private interests’.244 And
with the money used for arms and other military expenditure
we form a global fund245 to finally eliminate hunger and contribute
contribute to the development of the poorest countries so that their inhabitants
do not resort to violent or deceptive solutions or
are forced to leave their countries to seek a more dignified life.
