Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Reflections
The reading is thought-provoking. How fickle is the human heart. Jesus was triumphantly welcomed into Jerusalem and crucified a few days later. Paul and Barnabas were worshipped as gods by the mob and stoned to death some time later. How close are not glory and reviling! But the apostles are not bent on their own glory. The great message of the whole missionary journey is reported to the congregation on their return: He has opened to the Gentiles the gate of faith.
FIRST READING Acts 14:19-28
They told all that God had accomplished with their cooperation.
From the Acts of the Apostles
In those days there came Jews from Antioch and Ikonium
who rebuked the people.
Therefore they stoned Paul
and dragged him outside the city
believing that he was dead.
But when the disciples had gathered around him
he straightened up and went back into the city.
The next day, he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
After they had preached the Gospel in that city
and had won many disciples,
they returned to Lystra, Ikonium and Antioch.
There they confirmed the disciples in their good condition,
urged them to persevere in the faith
and said that through many afflictions
into the kingdom of God.
In each congregation they
after prayer and fasting, appointed elders for them,
and entrusted them to the Lord
in whom they now believed.
They travelled through Pisidia to Pamphylia,
preached the word in Perge
and reached Attalia.
There they set sail for Antioch
whence they,
recommended to God’s grace
had gone out to the work they had accomplished.
After their arrival, they called the congregation together
and told all
what God had accomplished with their cooperation,
and how He had opened to the Gentiles the gate of faith.
For quite some time they spent there with the disciples.
Interludium Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 21
Your works, Lord,
make your power known to men.
or : Alleluia.
Your works shall praise You, Lord,
thy pious ones shall praise thee.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
thy power they proclaim.
They make Your power known to men,
the splendour of thy kingdom.
Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,
your rule is for every generation.
My mouth sings the praises of the Lord
and everything that lives praise His Name forever.
ALLELUIA John 10, 14
Alleluia.
I am the good shepherd, says the Lord.
I know mine and mine know Me.
Alleluia.
Gospel Jn 14, 27-31a
My peace I give to you.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples :
“Peace I leave you;
my peace I give unto you.
“Not as the world gives it I give it to you.
“Let not thy heart be troubled or become smallhearted.
“Ye have heard Me say :
I am going but I am returning to you.
“If ye would love Me
ye would be glad that I am going to the Father
for the Father is greater than I.
“Now, before it happens I tell you,
that when it happens ye may believe.
“Much will I no longer speak to thee
for the prince of the world is coming.
“True, he can do nothing against Me,
but the world must know that I love the Father
and that I act as He has commanded Me.”

Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On brotherhood and social friendship
283. A sincere and humble worship of God “leads not to discrimination
hatred and violence, but to respect for the sacredness of life, to
respect for the dignity and freedom of others and the loving
commitment to the good of all”. Indeed, “he who does not love does not know
God not, for God is love” (1 Jn 4:8). Therefore, “the abominable
terrorism that threatens people’s security, both in the East
and in the West, both in the North and in the South and sows panic, fear
and pessimism, is not due to religion – even if it is instrumentalised by
terrorists instrumentalised – but to the accumulated misguided
interpretations of religious texts, to a politics of hunger, poverty
injustice, oppression, arrogance; therefore, an
stop supporting terrorist movements by
providing money, weapons, plans or justifications or also
media coverage and all these should be considered international
crimes that threaten global security and peace. A
such terrorism in all its forms and manifestations must be condemned
be condemned”. Religious beliefs regarding the sacred meaning of
human life enable us to “recognise the fundamental value
of common humanity, values in the name of which we
can and must work together, build and dialogue, forgive and
grow where the ensemble of different voices can form a noble
and harmonious chant, rather than fanatical cries of hatred.’
