FIRST READING              Gen. 14, 18-20
He offered bread and wine.

From the book of Genesis

In those days, Melchisedek, the king of Salem,
Offered Abram bread and wine.
Since he was a priest of the most high God ,
he blessed him with these words:
“Blessed be Abram by the most high God ,
who made heaven and earth,
and blessed be the most high God
who has delivered your enemy to you!”

And Abram gave him a tenth part of everything.

Answer Psalm Ps. 110(109) 1, 2, 3, 4

Keervers
Forever thou art a priest like Melchisedek.

The Lord speaks to my lord, “Sit at my right hand;
I lay your enemies as a footstool before your feet”.

From Zion the Lord reaches forth the sceptre of thy power;
rule now in the midst of your adversaries.

A prince art thou, when thou showest thyself
clothed with power, in splendour of holiness;
I have begotten thee before the dawn.

Sworn has the Lord, He does not take it back:
“For ever thou art a priest like Melchisedek”.

SECOND READING           1 Cor. 11:23-26
Whenever ye eat and drink, ye proclaim the Lord’s death.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

I myself have received from the Lord the tradition
which I in turn have passed on to you:
That the Lord Jesus
on the night in which He was delivered up,
took bread
and after giving thanks, broke it
and said:
“This is my body for you.
“Do this to my remembrance.”
Similarly, after the meal, He took the cup
with the words:
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
“Do this
every time ye drink it ,
to my remembrance.”

Every time ye eat this bread and drink from the cup,
proclaim the Lord’s death
until He comes again.

VERS FOR THE EVANGELY              John 6:51-52

Alleluia.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven,
says the Lord.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL            Lk. 9, 11b-17
All ate until they were satiated.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God,
and those who needed healing, He healed.
When the day began to come to an end ,
the twelve came to Him and said:
“Send the people away ;
then they can go to the villages and hamlets in the surrounding area
to find shelter there,
for here we are in a lonely place.”

But He replied:
“Just give them food.”

“We have no more than five loaves and two fish!
-they said-
or we would have to go and buy food for all those people.”

There were estimated to be as many as five thousand people.
He now enjoined his disciples:
“Let them sit down in groups of about fifty.”
They did so and made all take their seats.

Thereupon He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish,
lifted up His eyes to heaven,
pronounced the blessing on them,
broke them and gave them to his disciples
to present them to the crowd.
All ate until they were satisfied
and what they had left, they collected,
twelve baskets of chunks.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

26. Many of those who hold most of the resources and economic or political
power in their hands seem to concentrate mainly on covering up
of the problems or hiding their symptoms by merely
trying to reduce some of the negative effects of climate change.
But many symptoms suggest that these effects could get worse and worse
if we continue with the current models of production and consumption.
Therefore, it has become urgent to develop policies
to reduce carbon dioxide and
other highly polluting gases drastically by, for example,
replacing fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable
energy. In the world, there is a very low level of
access to clean and renewable energy. One also needs to develop technologies
suitable for energy storage. In some countries
however, advances have been made that are starting to become important
although these are still far from reaching a substantial scale. There have
been some investments in ways of production and transport that
use less energy and require fewer raw materials
as well as in ways of constructing and converting buildings that have
improve efficiency in terms of energy use. But these
good practices are far from becoming widespread.
