Consideration
The Joseph cycle is a wonderful story with a clear unitary structure and with constantly new elements of suspense. We actually read too little of it and it is recommended to read through the whole story once. In the day’s reading, we begin with the first arrival of Joseph’s brothers in Egypt to buy grain. This passage too reflects the whole intent of the story: it is a tie-in story that will explain how the descendants of the patriarchs end up in Egypt. So it makes the connection between patriarchs and exodus.

FIRST READING             Gen 41, 55-57 ; 42, 5-7a. 17-24a

We deserved this misfortune to our brother.

From the Book of Genesis

In those days all Egypt went hungry
and the people begged Pharaoh for bread,
but Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians :
“Just go to Joseph and do what he will tell you.”
When there was hunger in all the land ,
joseph made available the whole supply of wheat
and sold it to the Egyptians,
as the hunger in Egypt became more acute.
From all countries people came to Egypt
to buy grain from Joseph ;
for the famine raged fiercely throughout the world.

So Israel’s sons came to buy grain, as well as many others :
For there was famine in Canaan.
Joseph was the one who then ruled the land
and sold grain to all the inhabitants ;
so to him went Joseph’s brothers
and they bowed before him to the ground.
As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognised them,
but he did not make himself known to them.
Thereupon he had them imprisoned for three days.
On the third day, Joseph said to them :
“If ye wish to remain alive ,
then do as I am about to say,
for I am a God-fearing man.
“If ye are trustworthy, leave one of your brothers
in the house where thou hast been imprisoned ;
the others may go and take grain
for the hunger of thy families ;
but thou must bring thy youngest brother to me.
“Then shall the truth of thy words appear
and thou shalt not die.”
So they did.
They said to each other :
“Alas, we have deserved this to our brother.
“We saw how he anxiously begged for mercy,
but we did not want to listen.
“Therefore this misfortune befalls us.”
And Ruben said :
“I had told you,
not to harm the boy;
but you would not listen.
“And now we see how his blood is claimed back.”
Because they were using an interpreter
they did not know that Joseph understood them.
He turned away from them,
and tears welled up in his eyes.

INTERLUDIUM          Ps. 33(32), 2-3, 10-11, 18-19

Give us Lord, your mercy,
as we trust in you.

Honour the Lord with zither playing
and plays to Him on the harp.
Sing to the Lord a new song,
a clean and resounding refrain.

Plans of nations He overturns,
foils what nations plot.
Eternal stands the plan of the Lord,
what He has planned is valid for all generations.

But it is God who guards His servants,
those who trust in His favour,
that He will save them from death,
in famine will feed them.

ALLELUIA     1 Jn 2, 5

Alleluia.
He who keeps the word of the Lord,
in Him truly is God’s love complete.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  Mt 10:1-7

Goes to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that time Jesus called his twelve disciples to him
and gave them power
to cast out the unclean spirits
and to cure all diseases and ailments.
These are the names of the 12 apostles :
First : Simon, who is called Peter,
with his brother Andrew ;
James, the son of Zebedee, with his brother John ;
Philip and Bartholomew,
Tomas and Matthew the tax collector,
James the son of Alphaeus,
Taddeus, Simon the Zealot
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.
These 12 sent Jesus out with the command :
“Do not go among the Gentiles
and enter not into any city of the Samaritans ;
but you must go
to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
“Proclaim on your journey :
The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

46. Among the social components of a change at the
global level include the effects on employment of some
technological innovations, social exclusion, inequality
in availability and consumption of energy and other services, social
fragmentation, increases in violence and the emergence of new forms
of social aggressiveness, drug trafficking and increasing drug use
among the youngest and loss of identity. These are
among other signs that show how the growth of the last two
centuries in all its aspects has not meant integral progress and an improvement
of quality of life. Some of these signs are
simultaneously symptoms of a social decay, a tacit
breaking of the bonds of integration and social community.
