The Joseph story reaches the climax of its dramatic tension here: the denouement and the revealing of Joseph. The purpose of the whole story is clear. the lives of the descendants of the patriarchs are saved and immediately the great promises can be continued towards their fulfilment: “God has sent me before you to keep you alive”.
FIRST READING Gen. 44, 18-21. 23b-29 ; 45, 1-5
God has sent me before you
to keep you alive.
From the Book of Genesis
In those days, Judah approached Joseph and said:
“Lord, allow your servant
a single word to You,
without You becoming angry with Your servant,
for You are the equal of Pharaoh.
“My lord asked his servants :
Do you still have a father and a brother?
“We then answered our lord :
We have an old father and there is another young son,
who was born to him in his old age.
“Because his brother died ,
he is the only one left by his mother,
and his father loves him.
“Then you said to your servants :
Bring him to me, that I may see him.
“If your youngest brother does not come with you ,
you need not face me again.
“We returned to your servant, our father
and told him what my lord said.
“And when our father asked, to go and buy food again ,
we replied :
We cannot go that way.
“Only if our youngest brother goes with us ,
will we leave ;
for we cannot face that man,
if our youngest brother is not with us.
“Then thy servant, our father, said to us :
Thou knowest that my wife
gave me only two sons.
“The one has gone away from me ,
and I must assume that he has been torn up,
for I have not yet seen him again.
“If thou shouldst also take this one away from me ,
and a fatal accident should befall him,
then thou wouldst send the greybeard that I am
descend wailing into the kingdom of the dead.”
Now Joseph could no longer contain himself in front of the other bystanders
no longer hold himself in good stead and he exclaimed :
“Send everyone away.”
Thus there was no one left,
when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
He cried so loudly that the Egyptians heard ;
even in Pharaoh’s house it became known.
Joseph said to his brothers :
“I am Joseph. Is father still well?”
But his brothers could not utter a word ,
so dismayed were they about him.
Joseph, however, said to his brothers :
“Do come closer.”
When they had come closer, he said :
“I am Joseph, the brother you sold to Egypt.
“Ye need not be so dejected
and no longer blame yourself
that thou hast sold me hither ,
for God has sent me before thee
to keep thee alive.”

Never forget the miracles the Lord did.
The Lord sent a famine over the land
and made the breadsticks break.
He sent a single man before them
when Joseph was sold as a slave.
His feet were shackled with shackles,
his neck in a band of iron ;
until what he had foretold happened,
the word of the Lord set him free.
The king had him released from the dungeon,
the ruler of nations gave him freedom.
He appointed him lord of his house,
administrator of all his possessions.

At that time, Jesus said to the 12 :
“Proclaim on your journey :
The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
“Heal the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse lepers and cast out devils.
“For nothing ye have received, for nothing ye must give.
“So do not seek to acquire gold, silver or copper
to fill your belts with them.
“Nor furnish thee with a travelling bag for the road,
no second undergarment, no footwear or cane,
for the labourer is worth his keep.
“When thou comest into a town or village, examine
who is worthy to receive thee,
and stay there until thou depart again.
“When ye enter that house
bring it thy greeting of peace ;
and when it is worthy
may thy peace come upon that house,
but when it is not worthy of it,
then your peace returns to you.
“If one does not receive you somewhere
and does not listen to your words,
then leave that house or city
and shake the dust from your feet.
“Verily, I say unto you :
On the judgment day
it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah

On caring for the common home
47. Added to this are the dynamics of the media and the digital world,
which, when they become ubiquitous, do not promote the development
to live wisely, think deeply, love generously. The
great sages of the past in this context would be in danger of
seeing their wisdom stifled amid the chaotic noise of
information. This requires us to make a forceful effort that these resources
be translated into a new cultural development of humanity and
not into a decline of its deepest wealth. True wisdom, the
fruit of reflection, dialogue and generous encounter between persons,
is not acquired with a sheer accumulation of data that eventually
saturates and confuses into a kind of spiritual pollution. At the same time, there is
the tendency to replace real relationships with the other, with all the challenges they
involve, to be replaced by a kind of communication established by the internet.
This makes it possible to select or
eliminate according to our whim, and so a new
type of artificial emotions generated that have more to do with
devices and screens than with persons and nature. Today’s tools
allow us to communicate with each other and share knowledge and
share emotions. Sometimes, however, they also prevent us from making direct contact
with the other person’s anxiety, fear, joy and the complexity
of his personal experience. Therefore, the fact should not surprise
that along with the overwhelming supply of them comes a deep
and melancholic dissatisfaction or harmful isolation grows in the
interpersonal relationships.
