May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
God’s saving intervention in the middle of the night is illustrated by the side note that the dough had no time to rise. Thus, the Israelites were obliged to bake bread that was unleavened. This is the explanation of the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Matsot) that goes along with the Passover lamb. During the Passover period, people consumed unleavened bread for eight days (Ex 13.6).
FIRST READING Ex. 12, 37-42
The Lord was watching that night
to carry the Israelites out of Egypt.
From the Book of Exodus
In those days, the Israelites departed
from Rameses in the direction of Sukkot,
and the number of men who walked themselves
-thus not counting the children –
amounted to about six hundred thousand.
Many foreigners also travelled with them
and then large herds of small livestock and cattle.
They baked unleavened cakes from the dough
which they had brought with them from Egypt ;
this had not yet been leavened.
For they had been driven out of Egypt
without being given respite and even
without being able to provide provisions.
The Israelites’ stay in Egypt
had lasted four hundred and thirty years.
Just on the day these four hundred and thirty years had passed
all the armies of the Lord moved out of Egypt.
The Lord was watching that night to carry them away from Egypt.
Therefore, all the Israelites were watching over this night for the Lord,
all their generations throughout.

Jesus pressed their hearts not to make him known.

Matthew
At that time, the Pharisees left the synagogue
and were plotting to get Jesus out of the way.
But because Jesus knew this, He moved away from there.
Many followed Him, and He healed them all.
He pressed them, however, not to make Him known,
so that in fulfillment
the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah :
Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen,
my Beloved, in whom my soul delighted.
I will rest my spirit on Him,
God’s Law He shall proclaim to the nations.
He shall neither quarrel nor shout
and in the streets His voice shall not be heard.
A kinked reed He will not break
and will not extinguish a smouldering flax seed
before He has carried God’s Law to victory ;
and on His Name shall the nations hope.

56. In the meantime, economic powers continue to justify the current global
system, where speculation and the search for financial
gain prevail, which tend to ignore any context and the effects on
human dignity. It thus becomes clear that the decay of
the environment and human and ethical decay are closely linked.
Many will say they are unaware that they are acting immorally,
because the constant scattering deprives us of the courage to
perceive the reality of a limited and finite world.
Therefore, “everything fragile, like the environment, remains defenceless in the face
of the interests of the deified market, which have been
transformed”.
