Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Opening word

Abraham receives God
and gives his best for his great Guest.
Marta, too, is busy
and doing her best for Jesus who is visiting her.
Today, God appeals to our hospitality.
He knocks at the door of our hearts
and waits patiently for us to open to Him.
Let us listen to His words
and give Him our full attention.
Let us offer Him whatever concerns and worries us.

FIRST READING       Gen. 18, 1-10a
Lord, do not pass by your servant.

In those days the LORD appeared to Abraham
by the oak tree of Mamre
as he sat in the heat of the day
sat at the entrance to his tent.
He raised his eyes
and suddenly saw three men standing before him.
Immediately, he walked from the entrance of his tent towards them.
He bowed deeply and said:
“Be so benevolent, lord,
not to pass by your servant.
I will have water brought;
wash your feet and rest here under the tree.
I will fetch bread for thee to strengthen thee for thy further journey;
thou hast not passed by thy servant in vain.”
They said, “Very gladly.”
Abraham hurriedly went into the tent to Sarah and said:
“Quickly take three measures of fine flour, knead it and bake cakes from it.”
Then Abraham walked to the flock,
picked out a nice tender calf and gave it to his servant
to prepare it quickly.
Then he brought them cheese and milk,
and the calf he had prepared,
and served them all that.
While they ate, he stayed with them, standing under the tree.
Then they asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?”
Abraham replied, “There in the tent.”
Then the visitor said:
“In a year I will come back to you ;
then Sarah, your wife, will have a son.”

Refrain
Lord, who may be a guest in your tent?

He who is righteous and lives honourably,
harbours no evil plans in his heart,
commits no deceit with his tongue.

Who does not harm his neighbour
and does not disgrace his neighbours.
Who despises the evildoer,
but honours the servants of the Lord.

Who does not lend his property at usury,
is not corruptible as a witness.
Whoever behaves in this way,
will not falter in eternity.

SECOND READING               Col 1:24-28

The secret, which was hidden from all ages, is now revealed to His saints.

Brothers and sisters,

I rejoice
that I may suffer for you, and complete in my suffering body
what is still lacking in the trials of the Christ,
for the good of His body which is the Church.
I have become her servant
by virtue of the commission God has given me;
namely, to bring you the word of God in all its fullness:
To proclaim the secret
which was hidden from all ages and all generations,
but which has now been revealed to His faithful.
To them God has wanted to make known
how powerful and how wonderful
this secret is among the heathen nations.
And this secret consists in this:
“Christ in you”,
and also:
“hope of eternal glory”
Him we thus proclaim
when we all, without distinction,
exhort and teach with all the wisdom given to us
in order also to bring all, without distinction,
to perfection in Christ.

GOSPEL               Lk 10:38-42

Martha received Him into her dwelling;
Mary chose the best part.

In those days Jesus came into a village
and a woman called Martha received Him into her home.
She had a sister, Mary, who was
– seated at the feet of the Lord –
listened to His words.
Marta was engrossed in the busyness of ministry,
but she joined them for a moment and said:
“Lord, let it be indifferent to You ,
that my sister leaves me to serve alone?
Then tell her to help me.”

The Lord answered her:
“Marta, Marta,
how much you worry and fuss about many things.
Only one thing is needed.
Mary has chosen the best part
and it will not be taken away from her.”

On caring for the common home

57. It is foreseeable that in the face of the depletion of
some resources will look for a favourable scenario for new
wars, masked with noble demands. War always causes
heavy damage to the environment and cultural wealth of peoples and
the risks become enormous, when one thinks of nuclear and biological
weapons. After all, “despite international agreements calling for a
chemical, bacteriological and biological war, it is a fact
that in the laboratories, research into the development of new
assault weapons capable of affecting the natural balance
continues”. Greater attention is required of politicians to address the
causes that may cause new conflicts, to prevent and solve
resolve. But money-linked power is what most
resist this effort, and political plans often lack a broad
vision. Why do people today want to maintain a power that will be remembered
for its inability to intervene when it was urgent and
necessary to do?
