____________________________ Consideration The story of the transformation follows Jesus’ question to the disciples, “Who do you say that I am,” and the first announcement of his suffering. Even though the apostles have been travelling with Jesus for some time, they have not yet come to an intimate knowledge of his person. With Him they go up the mountain. In the mindset of tradition, the mountain was the place par excellence where God dwelt. The way there was life itself. On that road, the first disciples received a vision that makes it inescapably clear that Jesus was sent to go ahead as a new Moses and Elijah to the end of the world. Building tents and lingering in that particular experience was out of the question. On the contrary; from there the work would really begin. For us too, when we have come this far. FIRST READING 2 Pet 1:16-19 This voice we ourselves have heard from heaven. From the second letter of the holy apostle Peter Dearly beloved, When we proclaimed to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed, we did not rely on ingeniously devised myths but we spoke as eyewitnesses of His splendour. For He received honour and glorification from God the Father when by the exalted Majesty this word was addressed to Him : “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” And this voice we ourselves heard sounding from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. Because of this, for us the word of the prophets even more authority. Alleluia. This is My Son, the Well-Beloved, in whom I have been pleased; listen to Him. Alleluia.Peter, James and his brother John with him and ascended the mountain to pray. While He was praying, His countenance changed and His clothes became blindingly white. And behold, two men were conversing with Him; they were Moses and Elijah who had appeared in glory, and they spoke of His going away which He was to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions, meanwhile, were overcome by sleep. Wide awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing by Him. When these were about to depart from Him, Peter said to Jesus : “Master, it is good that we are here. “Let us build three tents, one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. As he spoke like this, a cloud came and overshadowed them. As the cloud enveloped them, they were overcome with fear. From the cloud sounded a voice that spoke: “This is My Son, the Chosen One, listen to Him.” As the voice echoed they realised that Jesus was alone. They kept silent about it and at the time did not tell anyone anything of what they had seen. _______________________________________
Laudato Si Encyclical of Pope Francis On caring for the common home
74. The experience of exile in Babylon brought about a spiritual crisis that led to a deepening of faith in God. Thus the people were urged in the midst of their unhappy situation to regain hope again. Centuries later, at another time of trial and persecution, when the Roman Empire sought to impose absolute rule imposition, the faithful once again found comfort and hope by increasing their trust in Almighty God, and they sang, “Great and wonderful are your deeds, Lord, God All-Ruler. Just and true are your ways” (Apok. 15, 3). If God was able to create the universe from nothing create, He can also intervene in this world and overcome every form of evil overcome. Unrighteousness, therefore, is not invincible. To be continued Every day at 1 am The Bible text in this edition is taken from The New Bible Translation, ©Dutch Bible Society 2004/2007.
