Consideration
After the ritual appointment of Joshua and the transfer of authority over the people, Deuteronomy recounts the death of Moses in an exceptionally simple manner (verse 5). This narrative contrasts with all the previous ones. Very elaborately, everything is narrated: The handover, the farewell songs. Now there is the impressive simplicity. Death is preceded by a moving story. Moses still gets to see the promised land for himself. The promise to the progenitor is thus fulfilled. The end of the book refers once more to the handover to Joshua, with the additional mention that no one will be comparable to Moses.
FIRST READING Deut. 34, 1-12
As the Lord had said, Moses died.
In Israel, no prophet rose again like him.
From the Book of Deuteronomy
In those days, Moses went out of the plain up Mount Nebo,
to the top of the Pisga, right opposite Jericho.
And the Lord showed him the whole land :
Gilead as far as Dan,
all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh,
the territory of Judah as far as the Sea in the west,
the Negeb, the region of Jordan, the plain of Jericho,
the city of palms, as far as Soar.
Then the Lord said to him :
“Now that is the land, of which I gave to Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob promised on oath :
To your descendants I will give it.
“I have shown it to you with your own eyes ,
though you shall not live to see the crossing there.”
There in Moab, Moses, the Lord’s servant, died,
as He had said.
He was buried in the valley, near Bet-Peor in Moab ;
to this day no one knows where his grave is.
Moses was a hundred and twenty years old, when he died ;
his eyes had not weakened nor his strength diminished.
In the plain of Moab, the Israelites mourned
thirty days over Moses, until the time of mourning was over.
Joshua, son of Nun,
had been filled with the spirit of wisdom
since Moses had laid hands on him,
and the Israelites obeyed him
and did what the Lord had commanded Moses ;
but no prophet arose in Israel like Moses,
who had known the Lord face to face
and who, sent by the Lord, in Egypt to Pharaoh,
to his courtiers and to all his country
had done all those signs and wonders
and with great power before Israel
impressive deeds.
INTERLUDIO Ps 66(65), 1-3a, 5, 8, 16-17
God be praised,
He has saved my life again and again.
Rejoice before God, all the nations of the earth,
sing the glory of His Name.
Bring Him your homage and say to your God :
Astonishing are all your deeds.
Come and behold what God has done,
staggering deeds among men.
Praise, all nations, now our God,
proclaim the fame of his deeds.
Come then, God-fearers, listen to me,
i will tell you what He has done to me.
Him my mouth has always asked for help,
my tongue has always praised Him.
ALLELUIA cf Eph. 1, 17-18
Alleluia.
The God of our Lord Jesus Christ
may enlighten our inner eye,
to see, how great is the hope
to which He calls us.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 18:15-20
When thy brother who sinned listens to thee ,
then thou hast won thy brother.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples :
“When thy brother hath sinned ,
reprimand him in private.
“Does he listen to thee ,
then thou hast won thy brother.
“But if he does not listen ,
bring in one or two more persons
so that everything rests on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
“If he will not listen to them ,
then submit it to the church.
“If he will not listen to the church either ,
then consider him a pagan or a tax collector.
“Verily, I say unto you :
whatever you shall bind on earth
shall also be bound in heaven,
and what ye shall dissolve on earth
shall also be dissolved in heaven.”
“Likewise I say to you :
When two of you in unison on earth ask anything
– it may be what it will –
shall they obtain it from my Father who is in heaven.
“For where two or three are united in My Name ,
there I am in their midst.”

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
81. Although humans also presuppose processes of evolution, they
also brings a novelty that cannot be fully explained by the
evolution of other open systems. Each of us possesses in itself
a personal identity, capable of dialogue with the
other and with God himself. Capacity for reflection, reasoning, creativity
interpretation, artistic elaboration and other new skills show
an exceptionality that goes beyond the physical and biological level
goes. The qualitative novelty of the emergence of a personal
being within material creation, presupposes a direct action
of God, a special calling to life and to a relationship of a You to
another You. Starting from the biblical texts, we consider the person
as a subject that can never be reduced to the category of an object.
