Consideration

Colossae is a Church founded not by Paul, but by Epaphras, a fellow believer. The reason why Paul is writing to a congregation unknown to him is because of reports reaching him about a fallacy that is on the rise in Colosse and its environs. That a crucified man of flesh and blood could grant union with God was unthinkable. Paul immediately puts his finger on the wound at the beginning of the letter: Twice he addresses his readers as ‘brothers in Christ’. It is the title of address with which the first Christians greeted each other. This is not about human solidarity based on family ties, environment, nationality or shared history: It is about the family of all those who live their human relationships from a believing perspective. Again: from faith in, hope of and love for the Lord. What is the state of our Christian family?

FIRST READING      Col. 1, 1-8

The word of truth came to you
and is bearing fruit in all the world.

Beginning of the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Colossae

From Paul,
by God’s will apostle of Christ Jesus,
and of our brother Timothy,
to the congregation of Colossae,
our brothers in faith and in Christ.
Grace to you and peace because of God our Father !

We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
whenever we remember you in our prayers.
For we have heard of thy faith in Christ Jesus
and of the love which thou hast to all saints,
because thou art animated by the hope
of what is reserved for you in heaven.
Ye first heard of this
when the gospel, the word of truth, came to you.
Throughout the world
by the way, it is bearing fruit and thriving,
as it is with you, since the day you heard of God’s grace
and acknowledged her in truth.
Thus thou didst learn it from Epaphras, our dear co-worker
who is to you a trusted servant of Christ.
From him we have learned
what love has been awakened in thee by the Spirit.

INTERLUDIUM          Ps. 52(51), 10, 11

I trust in God’s goodness forever.

I stand in God’s house like a green olive tree,
trust in his goodness forever.

You, Lord, I will always give thanks,
for Thou hast done all this.
Thy Name will I praise for all Thy faithful,
because Thou art gracious.

ALLELUIA           Ps. 119(118), 27

Alleluia.
Lead me in the way of your commands, Lord,
then I will be mindful of your deeds.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL     Lk. 4:38-44

I must also bring the Good News to other cities,
for for this I am sent.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time Jesus left the synagogue of Capernaum
and entered Simon’s house.
Because Simon’s mother-in-law had a high fever
they called for his help for her.
He came and stood at the head of her bed
and gave a stern command to the fever.
She was freed from it
and immediately she got up and served them.
At sunset, all brought their sick to Him;
those sick suffered from many ailments.
He healed them by laying hands on them one by one.
Out of many also went devils, shouting :
“Thou art the Son of God.”
He gave a stern command and did not allow them to speak,
for they knew He was the Messiah.
When day had come, He went out
and went to a lonely place.
The people, however, sought Him,
came to where He was
and tried to hold Him
to prevent Him from leaving them.
But He spoke to them :
“I must also bring to other cities
the Good News of the Kingdom of God ,
for for this I was sent.”
And He preached in the synagogues of the Jewish Land.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

Technology: creativity and power
102. Humanity has entered a new era in which the
power of technology presents us with a fork in the road. We are the
heirs to two centuries of awesome waves of change: the
steam engine, the railway, the telegraph, electricity, the automobile, the
aeroplane, the chemical industries, modern medicine
computing and, more recently, the digital revolution, robotics, the
biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. It is right to rejoice
at these advances and to become enthusiastic towards the vast
opportunities that these ongoing innovations open up for us,
because “science and technology are a magnificent product of human
creativity, which is a gift from God”. The modification of nature for
useful purposes has been a characteristic of the human race from the beginning
and so engineering “brings out” the “excitement of the human spirit
expressed in incrementally overcoming certain material
limitations”. Technology has countless evils that afflicted humans,
limited and fought against. We cannot help but appreciate the progress achieved,
especially in medicine, engineering and in the field of communication
appreciate and be grateful for it. And how would we not be grateful
for all the efforts of many scientists and technicians who have
have worked out alternatives for sustainable development?
