CONSIDERATION

We are struck by the richness of this letter : Spiritual insight; living a worthy life; pleasing the Lord in all things. The end of this reading (12-14) even resembles a short confession of faith, formulated in figurative language : Darkness and light, deliverance and forgiveness are among the characteristics of the power God grants to sustain Christians in the trials they face. He has snatched us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son: In him our deliverance is assured and our sins are forgiven.

FIRST READING  Col 1:9-14

God has taken us out of the domain of darkness
and transferred to the kingdom of his beloved Son.

From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Colossae

Brothers and sisters,

From the moment we heard
what love has been awakened in you by the Spirit,
we have not ceased to pray for you.
We beseech God to grant you all wisdom and spiritual understanding,
so that you may fully understand his will
and lead a life worthy of the Lord
and pleasing to Him in all things.
May you bring forth fruits
of active goodness in all kinds of fields
and also increase in the true knowledge of God.
May He mightily strengthen you in His glorious power
to endure and bear all things
and at the same time thank the Father joyfully,
because He enabled you
to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
He has snatched us from the domain of darkness
and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.
In Him our deliverance is assured
and our sins are forgiven.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 98(97), 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6

His benefits the Lord made known to us.

His benefits the Lord made known to us,
the nations his righteousness.
Once again His goodness and faithfulness proved
in favour of Israel’s house.

All the earth beheld
what our God did for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

Sing to the Lord by the zither,
with zither and psalters.
Let trumpet and trumpet sound
and dance before the Lord, your king.

ALLELUIA             Ps. 119(118), 34

Alleluia.
Give me understanding to observe your law, Lord,
to follow it with all my heart.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Lk. 5, 1-11

They left everything behind to follow Him.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

On a certain day
jesus stood on the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret,
while the people urged Him
to hear the word of God.
He now saw two boats lying on the shore of the lake;
the fishermen had gone out and washed their nets.
He got into one of the boats, Simon’s,
and asked him to go a little way off shore.
He sat down
and from the boat He continued His teaching to the people.
When He had finished His speech, He said to Simon:
“Now sail to the deep
and cast out your nets for the catch.”
Simon replied:
“Master!
all night we toiled without catching anything;
but at your word I will cast out the nets.”
They did so and caught such a mass of fish in their nets
that these threatened to rip.
So they beckoned their mate in the other boat
to come and help them.
When they had come
they filled both boats to the brim.
On seeing this, Simon Peter fell at Jesus’ feet and said:
“Lord, depart from me ,
for I am a sinful man.”
Dismay had taken hold of him
and of all who were with him,
because of the catch they had made.
So it also happened to James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were working with Simon.
Jesus, however, spoke to Simon:
“Do not be afraid,
from now on you will catch people.”
They brought the boats ashore
and left everything behind to follow Him.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

103. Technical science, if correctly oriented, is capable of
not only bring about really important things to improve the quality
of life of human beings, from the objects of domestic
use to the major means of transport, bridges, buildings
public spaces. It is also capable of bringing forth the beautiful and the
man, immersed in the material world, to make the “leap”
to the world of beauty. Can one appreciate the beauty of an aeroplane
or of some skyscrapers? There are precious painting or
musical works that have been brought about by resorting
to new technical instruments. Thus, in the search
of the technician for beauty and in who looks at this beauty, one makes the
leap to a truly human beauty.
