Consideration
The letters to Timothy and to Titus form a theological literary unit. They belong together. They are called pastoral letters. They deal with pastoral problems in the young Church of the second generation: church discipline, faithful practice and organisation. They are probably by the same author, a follower of Paul, who uses the pseudonym of Paul as was common at the time, both in biblical and other literauur. Above all, they teach us that each generation must appropriate the faith and faith life of the first generation of apostles, in its own way, and faithfully at the beginning. We too can mirror our faith life against that of the first Christians: where do we lack courage? What do we want to see differently?
FIRST READING 1 Tim. 1, 1-2. 12-14
Once I was a blasphemer,
but I have been shown mercy.
Beginning of the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to
Timothy
From Paul,
apostle of Christ Jesus
by virtue of the commission of God our Saviour
and of Chritus Jesus our hope,
to Timothy, his legitimate child by faith.
Grace, mercy and peace to you
because of God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord !
Dear one,
i give thanks to Him who strengthens me,
Christ Jesus our Lord,
for giving me His trust
by taking me into His service,
though I was once a blasphemer,
a persecutor and aggressor.
But mercy was shown to me
because, still unbelieving, I acted in ignorance.
And I became partakers of the grace of our Lord in rich abundance
and with it the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 16(15), 1-2a, 5, 7-8, 11
The Lord is my inheritance, my drink from the cup.
Protect me, God, to You I take refuge;
Thou art my Lord, I acknowledge it.
The Lord is my inheritance, my drink from the cup,
He holds my destiny in His hand.
I thank the Lord who has always guided me,
He speaks into my heart even at night.
Always I keep my eyes fixed on the Lord,
i do not fall, for He is beside me.
You will show me the way of life
to find all my joy with Thee,
everlasting happiness at Your side.
ALLELUIA cf. Acts 16, 14b
Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of your Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 6, 39-42
Can sometimes one blind person lead another ?
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time, Jesus held out this parable to his disciples :
“Can sometimes one blind man lead the other?
“Do not then both fall into the pit?
“The disciple is not above his master ;
but he will be fully formed if he is like his master.
“Why do you look at the mote in your brother’s eye
and why do you take no notice of the beam in your own eye?
“How canst thou say to thy brother :
Brother, let me take the mote out of thy eye,
while you do not notice the beam in your own eye?
“Hypocrite,
first remove the beam from your own eye;
then you will see clearly enough
to remove the mote
which is in thy brother’s eye.”

Laudato Si
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
111. Ecological culture cannot be satisfied with a series of
partial answers to the problems of environmental damage, the
depletion of natural resources and pollution.
It would require a different outlook, a different thinking, a different politics, a different educational programme, a different lifestyle and a different spirituality
should be those that resist the advance of the technocratic
paradigm. Otherwise, even the best ecological initiatives may end up
become trapped within the same globalised logic. Merely looking
for a technical remedy for every environmental problem that arises,
means isolating issues that are in reality interconnected, and
hiding the true and deepest problems of the global system.
