Monday – Our Lady of Sorrows

Mary is depicted here mourning, grieving for
her son Jesus, who died on the cross.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
The remembrance of Our Lady of Sorrows grew out of a deeply rooted Marian devotion during the late Middle Ages. In our (Western) Church, the remembrance has been celebrated since 1814. From the reading from the Letter of Hebrews, the link between her and Jesus also becomes clear in this remembrance of Mary: If Jesus learned obedience in the school of suffering, the same applies to his mother.
Just as people can entrust themselves to Jesus in their distress because he knows what suffering is like, Mary too is a figure who evokes understanding and compassion for many. Where do we place Mary in our lives? What do we want to ask her today?

FIRST READING           Hebrews 5, 7-9

Christ taught obedience
and became the cause of eternal salvation.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,

In the days of his mortal life
christ, under loud cries and weeping
offered up prayers and supplications to God
who could save Him from death.
For His piety, He was heard :
Although He was God’s Son
he learned obedience in the school of suffering ;
and when He had reached the end
he became for all who obey Him
cause of eternal salvation.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 31(30), 2-3b, 3c-4, 5-6, 15-16, 20

Save me, Lord, by your grace.

In You, Lord, I seek refuge,
yet never fail me.
Righteous God, deliver me,
hear me and save me speedily.

Be to me a rock where I can flee,
a strong fortress where I can dwell in safety.
For ever thou art my rock and my fortress,
thy Name is my leader and guide.

The net that men cast on me secretly
i escape through Thee who always protects me.
Trustingly I place my spirit in Your hands,
Thou wilt protect me, faithful God.

Still I trust in Thee, Lord,
always I say: Thou art my God.
Thou hast my fate in Thy hand,
deliver me from my persecutors.

How great are thy benefits, Lord,
which Thou hast destined for those who fear Thee.
Thou givest them to every one who comes to Thee,
perceptible to all men.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia.
Blessed art thou, Mary.
Without dying
under the Cross of the Lord
earned the palm of martyrdom.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL               John 19, 25-27

How much agony, how many pains plagued that good Mother,
when her eyes had to rest on the suffering of her Son.
(Stabat Mater)

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time
standing by Jesus’ cross were his mother, his mother’s sister,
Mary, the wife of Klopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother
and next to her the disciple He loved
he said to His mother :
“Woman, behold your son there.”
Then He said to the disciple :
“See there thy mother.”
And from that moment the disciple took her into his house.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

114. What is currently happening presents us with the need for a
courageous cultural revolution. Science and technology are not neutral
but contain different intentions and
possibilities and can take shape in different ways.
No one wants to return to the days of cave man, but it is necessary to
to hold the pass to look at reality in a different way,
gather the positive and sustainable developments and
at the same time the values and great purposes that have been destroyed by a megalomaniacal
uninhibitedness, have been destroyed.
