Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wishes to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

CONSIDERATION

Eighteen years have since passed since the Jews returned to their land from exile. The rebuilding of the temple has stalled. The exiles who returned and initially began building the temple with great godliness are now prioritising their own desires. They build beautiful and comfortable homes for themselves. They realise their dreams, but no longer dwell on the dream of God. The house of God, meanwhile, degenerates into a ruin: It is called that the time has not yet come to build his house. Do we recognise this?
‘Live first, then work and earn money, and then make time for God’, or ‘We don’t have time to celebrate the Eucharist.’ And there is already so much to do at the weekend!’, or even: ‘I don’t even keep 15 minutes for myself during the day: when should I even come to prayer?….

FIRST READING                   Hag.1, 1-8
Rebuild the house of the Lord;
then I will be well pleased in it.

Beginning of the prophet Haggai
In the second year of King Daríus
in the sixth month, on the first day of that month,
was addressed by the prophet Haggai
the word of the LORD was addressed to Zerúbbabel,
the son of Káltiel, governor of Judah,
and to the high priest Józua, the son of Jehósadak.
Thus speaks the LORD of the heavenly powers:
“This people think, that the time has not yet come ,
the time to rebuild the house of the LORD.
But the word of the LORD,
spoken by the prophet Haggai, reads thus:
Is it the time for you then
to dwell yourselves in your well timbered houses ,
while this house is still a ruin?
Therefore – so speaks the LORD of heavenly powers –
thou must consider the way on which thou art.
Ye have sown much, but ye bring in little;
ye eat, but ye are not satisfied;
ye drink, but ye are not made merry;
ye clothe yourselves, but ye are not warm;
the wage-worker gets his wages,
but in the pouch with a hole!
Thus speaks the LORD of heavenly powers:
Thou must consider the road on which thou art.
Go into the mountain country, fetch wood there
and rebuild the house;
then I will have my pleasure in it
and display my glory, says the LORD.”

INTERLUDIUM             Ps. 149, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b

Our Lord who loves his people,
wreathes the oppressed with wreaths of victory.
Alleluia.

Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise resounds in the midst of His people.
Israel cheers its Creator,
let Zion’s sons salute their King.

Praise His Name in a holy dance,
play harp and zither before Him.
For our Lord, who loves His people,
wreathes the oppressed with wreaths of victory.

Rejoice therefore, saints, for your triumph,
celebrate in your army places;
go with the song of God in thy mouth,
a task that honours His pious ones.

ALLELUIA             John 17, 17b, a

Alleluia.
Your word is truth, Lord,
consecrate us to Thee in truth.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                    Lk. 9, 7-9
Herod said, John I have beheaded.
Who can this be about whom I hear such stories?

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

In those days the prince Herod heard all that was happening
and he did not know what to make of it.
For some said, “John has risen from the dead”
others: “Elijah has appeared”;
and still others: “One of the ancient prophets has risen.”
But Herod said:
“John I have beheaded.
Who can that be about whom I hear such stories?”
He therefore wanted to see Jesus.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

The need to protect labour
124. In any design of an integral ecology that does not exclude human beings, it is
it is indispensable to involve the value of labour, expressed by Saint
John Paul II with such wisdom in his encyclical Laborem exercens
was developed. We recall that, according to the biblical story, God placed
placed man in the newly created garden (cf. Gen 2:15) not only to take the
care for (preserve) what was there, but also to
to work, so that it would produce fruit (cultivate). The labourers
and artisans “maintain the goods of this world”
(Sir. 38, 33). Human intervention that favours sensible development of the
creation favours, constitutes the most appropriate way of taking care of it
care. This also implies that man becomes an instrument of God in order to
thus helping to bring out the possibilities that He Himself has put in things
emerge: “The Lord makes the earth produce medicinal herbs
bring forth, and a wise man does not despise them” (Sir. 38:4).
