Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

OPENING WORD

With the parable about Lazarus and the rich man
Jesus wants to open our eyes
to what is going wrong in our society.
After all, today there is still a wide gap between rich and poor.
God hopes for the responsibility of each of us
to change this.
He urges us to have an eye for the poor at our door.
Let us pray that the Lord will make us ever more sensitive
to the needs, worries and pain of those who live in poverty
and feel neither at home nor welcome anywhere.

FIRST READING      Am. 6, 1a.4-7
The self-assured and carefree will go into exile first.

From the prophet Amos

This says the almighty LORD:
“Woe to the carefree in Zion,
the self-assured on Samaria’s mountain.
They lie on ivory beds
and stretch out on their resting benches;
they eat the lambs of the flock
and the calves from the stable.
They invent songs
to the strumming of the harp,
and think that their playing equals David’s;
they drink wine from wide bowls
and anoint themselves with the precious oil,
but for Joseph’s downfall they do not care.
Therefore they are the first to go into exile,
and the feasts
of those who lie lazily stretched out there.”

INTERLUDIUM              Ps. 146(145) 7, 8-9ab, 9cd-10

Refrain
Praise my soul, the Lord.

The Lord always keeps His word,
he gives justice to the oppressed.
The Lord gives bread to those who are hungry,
prisoners He grants freedom.

The eyes of the blind the Lord opens,
he raises up the brokenhearted.
The Lord loves the righteous,
the Lord preserves the displaced.

The Lord gives support to orphans and widows,
but sinners he lets go astray.
The Lord is king for ever,
your God, Zion, rules over all generations.

SECOND READING                          I Tim. 6, 11-16
Keep the commandment until the appearance of the Lord.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy

Dear one,

Strive for righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, perseverance, gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith,
grasp eternal life.
To this end ye have been called,
to this end ye have made the good confession
before many witnesses.
I commend thee before the face of God who gives life to all,
and of Christ Jesus,
who made the good confession before Pontius Pilate:
keep this commandment immaculate and untainted
until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ
whom God will make us behold in due time,
He, the Blessed One,
the only Ruler,
the great King and Supreme Lord
who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light.
No man has seen Him or is able to see Him.
To Him be honour and eternal power!
Amen.

Verse for the gospel               2 Cor. 8,9

Alleluia.
Jesus became poor while He was rich,
that ye might become rich through His poverty.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                   Lk 16:19-31
Thy portion of good thou hast received, and Lazarus fell to evil;
this one now experiences consolation, but you are tortured.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“Once there was a rich man
who was clothed in purple and fine linen
and celebrated lavishly every day,
while a poor man, whose name was Lazarus,
lay with sores covered at the gate.
He longed to satisfy his hunger
with what fell from the rich man’s table.
But only dogs came and licked his sores.
Now it happened that the poor man died
and was carried into Abraham’s lap by the angels.
The rich man also died and was given an honourable burial.
In the underworld, prey to many pains,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham from afar
and Lazarus in his womb.
Then he cried out:
Father Abraham, have mercy on me
and instruct Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water
and come and refresh my tongue with it,
for I am being tortured by the flames here.
But Abraham replied:
My son, remember how during your lifetime you
received your share of good
and how in like manner to Lazarus fell the evil part;
therefore here now he is experiencing consolation
but thou art tortured.
Moreover, there is a wide gulf between us and you forever,
so that there is no possibility,
– even if one wanted to –
from here to you nor from there to us.
The rich man said:
Then I ask thee, father,
that thou wilt send him to my father’s house,
for I have five more brothers;
let him warn them,
lest they also
end up in this place of torment.
But Abraham spoke:
They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.
But he said:
Och no, father Abraham!
But if one goes to them from the dead ,
they will repent.
He, however, spoke to him:
If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets ,
neither will they be persuaded
if anyone rises from the dead.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

127. We argue that “man is the designer, centre and goal of
all socio-economic life”. When, nevertheless, in the
man the capacity to contemplate and respect is lost,
the conditions are created whereby the idea of labour is
deformed. One must always remember that man is at the same time
himself the responsible processor of his material improvement,
his moral progress and the full fulfilment of his spiritual
destiny”. Labour should be the domain for this multifaceted
personal development, in which many dimensions of life
come into play; creativity, planning for the future, development of
abilities, practice of values, communication with others, an
attitude of reverence. Therefore, contemporary society demands more than
the narrow interests of corporations and questionable economic
rationality, that “as a priority the goal should be pursued of giving all people
access to work”.
