Tuesday – St Jerome, pr. and krkl.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration

This reading is not just about the return of all Jews from the scattering. It refers to a kind of religious revival throughout the world. The Gentiles are leaving their own gods and want to serve Yahweh. So deep is this total reversal, so many Gentiles are converting that they will make up ten times the Jewish exiles. We too hope that a runaway world will reflect on the whys and wherefores of its pursuit of ever more and ever better. Then people can be liberated from addiction and idolatry, and the unique meaning of Jesus Christ can be discovered and recognised. Does the way we are Christians make others curious? Do we ourselves feel in the depths of our hearts an inexplicable love for all people? What obstacles might we need to clear in our own hearts first to do so?

FIRST READING             Zech. 8, 20-23

Many nations will come to seek the Lord in Jerusalem.

From the prophet Zechariah

Thus speaks the LORD of the heavenly powers:
“One day nations will come and inhabitants of many cities ,
and the inhabitants of one city will go
to those of the other, and they will say:
Let us go and beg the mercy of the LORD
and let us go and seek the LORD of the heavenly powers;
i too will go with them.
Then many peoples and mighty nations will come
to seek in Jerusalem the LORD of the heavenly powers
and beg his mercy.”
Thus speaks the LORD of heavenly powers:
“In those days, then, men ,
coming from peoples of all languages,
seize one Jewish man by the slip of his garment
and say to him:
‘With you we wish to go,
for we have heard that God is with you.”

INTERLUDIUM          Ps. 87(86), 1-3,4-5,6-7

God is with us (Zech. 8, 23).

His city on the holy mountains:
The Lord loves her;
the gates of Zion much more
than all the tents of Jacob.
How great is what is prophesied of you,
Jerusalem, city of God!

Once Egypt and Babylon will be numbered
to those who worship the Lord.
Yes, Philistines and Tyre and Koes,
they too will become citizens of Zion.
They will then say, My mother is she,
of her were we all born.

And He Himself will declare,
the Most High, the Lord;
He will write in the book of nations:
These too belong there.
Then they will dance and sing:
The source of our life be Thou!

ALLELUIA                   Phil. 2, 15-16

Alleluia.
Shine like stars in the universe,
and hold fast the word of life.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Lk. 9, 51-56

Jesus firmly accepted the journey to Jerusalem.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

When the days of his exaltation
faced their fulfilment,
jesus resolutely accepted the journey to Jerusalem
and sent messengers ahead of him.
These came on their journey to a Samaritan village
to prepare his stay there.
But the Samaritans did not receive Him,
because Jerusalem was the goal of His journey.
When the disciples James and John became aware of this,
they asked:
“Lord, wilt thou have us call down fire from heaven
to destroy them?”
But He turned around and reprimanded them in a stern tone.
Thereupon they left for another village.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

129. If employment is to remain possible, it is indispensable to promote an
economy that favours a multiplicity of production and creativity of
enterprise favours. For example, there is a wide variety of
small-scale farming systems for food, which continues to feed most of the
world population continues to be fed, using a limited amount of land
and water is used and less waste is produced, either on
small plots of arable land and in kitchen gardens, either in hunting and harvesting
of forest products, or in small-scale fisheries. Large-scale farming forces
especially in the agricultural sector, small farmers to sell their land or move away from
abandon their traditional production methods. Attempts by some
of them to develop other, more diversified forms of production
prove futile on the grounds of the difficulty of accessing
to regional or global markets or because the infrastructure of sales
and transport are at the service of big business. The authorities
have the right and responsibility to take measures that will provide a
clear and strong support for small producers and the diversification
of production. An economic freedom from which all
benefit may sometimes make it necessary to impose limits on those with the most
possess resources and financial power to set limits. A purely theoretical
economic freedom, where circumstances prevent
many from actually benefiting from it, and access to
work is reduced, becomes a contradictory narrative that does politics
no credit. Entrepreneurship, which is a noble vocation aimed at
producing wealth and improving the world for all,
can be a very fruitful method to boost the region in which its activities
take place, especially if one understands that job creation is
of jobs is an indispensable part of service to
the common good.
