Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
Faith is often presented as cherishing hope against all hope. Humanly speaking, Abraham had every reason to despair, to question his future, to think he was in a hopelessly blocked situation, to doubt. Biblically speaking, it is precisely such hopelessness that constitutes the ground of God’s love. Abraham, against all hope, put his trust in God. What is written about Abraham also applies to us. Our sins and those of the world around us, the responsibilities that sometimes crush us, the worries that weigh on us: Let us lay them at the Lord’s feet. He has promised to save us, and he will.
FIRST READING Rom. 4, 20-25
These words were not only written down
for Abraham’s sake but also for ours,
whom believing will be charged likewise.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
Abraham did not doubt God’s promise for a moment.
On the contrary,
he honoured God by the strength of his faith,
by his firm conviction
that He is able to fulfil what He has promised.
Therefore, it was imputed to him as righteousness.
These words were written down not only for his sake
but also for our sake,
who believe it will likewise be imputed,
since we believe in Him
who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead :
Jesus who was delivered up for our failings
and was raised for our justification.
INTERLUDIUM Lk. 1, 69-70, 71-72, 73-75
Praised be the Lord, the God of Israel,
for he cares for his people and delivers them.
A saviour He has begotten for us
in the lineage of David, His faithful ;
as He had declared from of old
through His holy prophets .
Delivered from the power of our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us.
Thus will He be merciful to our fathers ,
keeping His holy covenant.
The oath sworn to our father Abraham
to grant us once .
to escape the grip of enemies
To serve Him without fear ,
in piety and righteousness
all our days before His Face.
And thou, child, shalt be a prophet of the Most High ,
for thou goest forth before the Lord to make his way.
ALLELUIA Ps. 119(118), 27
Alleluia.
Lead me in the way of your commands, Lord,
then I will be mindful of your deeds.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk 12:13-21
No possession can secure your life.
All your provisions, for whom are they ?
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time, someone from the people said to Jesus :
“Master, tell my brother that he shares the inheritance with me.”
But Jesus answered him :
“Man, who has appointed Me judge or divider over you?”
And He spoke to him :
“Beware and guard against all greed !
“For no possession, – though so abundant –
can secure your life.”
He told them the following parable :
“The land of a rich man had yielded a great harvest.
“Therefore this one deliberated to himself :
What should I do?
“I have no room to store my harvest.
“And he said :
This is what I am going to do :
i will tear down my barns and build bigger ones :
In them I will then store all my wealth of corn.
“Then I will say to myself :
Man, you have a great wealth lying, for long years ;
rest now,
eat and drink and enjoy it !
“But God spoke to him :
Fool !
“This very night they will come to claim your life from you ;
and all those provisions you have made,
for whom are they then?
“So it goes with one who amasses treasures for himself ,
but is not rich with God.”

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
Intergenerational justice
159. The concept of the common good also concerns future generations.
International economic crises have inexorably demonstrated the harmful
effects that denying a common destiny
entails, from which even those who will come after us
cannot be excluded. Meanwhile, one can no longer speak of
sustainable development without intergenerational solidarity.
When we think of the situation of leaving the planet to the
future generations, we enter another logic, that of
the selfless gift we receive and communicate. When the earth
is given to us, we can no longer think only from a utilitarian
criterion of efficiency and productivity for individual benefit.
We are not talking here about an optional attitude, but an essential
question of justice, since the earth we have been given
also belongs to those who will come. The bishops of Portugal
have urged us to assume this duty of justice:
“The environment belongs to the logic of receiving. It is a loan that
each generation receives and must pass on to the next”.
An integral ecology has this broad perspective.
