Consideration
If God is for us, who will be against us ? The only thing we are absolutely sure of is God’s love for us. We can never be sure of ourselves: we keep bumping up against our own limitations, we remain sinners in need of God’s forgiveness. But his love is reliable, unconditional, unbreakable. Nothing can separate us from this love, which is in Jesus Christ. Paul lists: neither fear, nor persecution, nor danger …
And even if we should let go of the Lord, even then He will not let go of us. It is a challenge for each of us: what problems, trials from our personal lives can we add to Paul’s list ?
FIRST READING Rom. 8, 31b-39
No creature in the universe will be able to separate us
from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
If God is for us,
then who shall be against us?
He did not spare even His own Son:
for all of us He delivered Him up.
And after such a gift, would He not also grant us everything else?
Who will accuse God’s elect?
God who justifies?
Who will condemn them?
Christ Jesus perhaps, who died,
moreover, who has been raised
and who, seated at God’s right hand pleads our case?
Who will separate us from the love of Christ?
Tribulation perhaps or distress?
Persecution, hunger, nakedness, peril of life or the sword?
-After all, it is written :
“For Your sake, death threatens us all day ;
we are treated like cattle for slaughter.”-
But over all this we triumph gloriously,
thanks to Him who loved us.
I am convinced
that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor evil spirits,
neither what is nor what will be,
and no power in the high or in the deep,
nor any being in the universe
shall be able to separate us from the love of God
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 109(108),21-22, 26-27, 30-31
Come and help me, my Lord and God,
save me in your mercy.
Thou, Lord my God, help me for thy Name’s sake,
save me by thy mild mercy.
For I am unhappy and poor,
my heart is wounded in my breast.
Come help me therefore, my Lord and God,
save me in your mercy.
Then they will know that it is Thy hand,
that Thou, Lord, hast done this.
Then I will praise Thee with a loud voice,
Praise Thee before all men ;
because Thou hast stood by the poor
and saves him from condemnation.
ALLELUIA Mt 4, 4b
Alleluia.
Not from bread alone does man live,
but from all that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk 13:31-35
It is not fitting that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
At that time, some Pharisees came to tell Jesus :
“Flee, depart from here ,
for Herod wants to kill You.”
He spoke to them :
“Go and say to that fox :
Behold, I cast out devils
and I work healings today and tomorrow ;
and on the third day the consummation will come for Me.
“But today, tomorrow and the day after, I must go forth ,
for it is not fitting that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
that kills and stones the prophets sent to you!
“How often have I wished to gather thy children ,
as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
but ye have not willed.
“Behold, thy house shall be left uninhabited.
“I say unto thee : Ye shall see Me no more
until the time cometh when ye shall say :
Blessed is the Coming in the name of the Lord.”

Laudato Si
Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On caring for our common home
169. On the concern of biodiversity and desertification,
progress has been much less significant. As for
climate change, progress has been dismally low. The reduction
of greenhouse gases requires sincerity, courage and responsibility,
especially on the part of the most powerful and polluting countries. The
United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio 20
called (Rio de Janeiro 2012), issued an equally comprehensive, if ineffective
final declaration. The international negotiations could
not proceed in a significant way as a result of the positions
of countries that prefer their own national interests
over the global common good. All those who will suffer the
consequences we are trying to cover up will remember this
lack of awareness and responsibility. While we were
were drafting this encyclical, the debate reached a particular
intensity. We believers cannot but pray to God for
a positive development of the current debate, so that future
generations do not suffer the consequences of unwise
delays.
