Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
Nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. So proclaimed Paul in yesterday’s reading. But suddenly the tone turns. Paul himself is startled by his strong expressions. So why are my people, the chosen people, separated from Christ? It is a baffling drama for which he has no words; with which he knows no way. So there is an exception, namely the failure to accept God’s love, the faithlessness. Yet this leads not to a solution for Paul but to a theological impasse. So what do you do with God’s promise?

FIRST READING             Rom. 9, 1-5

I would wish to be cursed myself
if I could help my brothers with that.

From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Rome

Brothers and sisters,

I speak the truth in Christ,
i do not lie,
my conscience guarantees it to me in the Holy Spirit :
In my heart is great sorrow and a pain that does not cease.
Truly,
i would wish to be cursed and separated from Christ myself
if I could help my brothers and kinsmen with this.
After all, they are Israelites :
To them belongs the adoption into sons ;
to them belong the glory, the covenants,
the legislation, the worship and the promises ;
of them are the patriarchs
and from them comes forth the Christ according to the flesh
who, above all, is God :
the blessed for ever !
Amen.

INTERLUDIUM                          Ps. 147, 12-13, 14-15, 19-20

Praise now the Lord, Jerusalem.

Praise now the Lord, Jerusalem,
Zion, glorify thy God!
For He has firmly locked your gates,
blessed thy sons within thy wall.

He lets you cultivate your fields in peace
and feed you with wheat flour.
He sends forth His command over the earth
and hastens his word.

It is He who sent Jacob his word,
his law and commandments for Israel.
Never was there a people He treated like this,
no other does He make His ways known.

ALLELUIA                         Mt 11, 25

Alleluia.
I praise Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because You have revealed these things to children.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                              Lk. 14, 1-6

Which of you will not immediately
if his son or his ox falls into a well pull him out,

even if it is the Sabbath?

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

One Sabbath, when Jesus
entered the house of one of the chief Pharisees
to have the meal there,
they kept a constant eye on Him.
At one point He became aware of a man
suffering from dropsy.
Thereupon Jesus turned to the scribes and Pharisees
with the question :
“May one heal someone on Sabbath or not?”
But they said nothing.
Thereupon He laid His hand on him ;
He healed him and let him go.
Then He turned to them with the words :
“Which of you will not immediately
if his son or an ox falls into a well ,
pull him out, even if it is the Sabbath?”
They were unable to object.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

170. Some of the strategies for low emissions of polluting
gases are aimed at internationalising the cost of the
environment, at the risk of imposing onerous obligations, equal to those of the most industrialised countries, on countries with fewer resources
imposed. Imposing these measures penalises the countries that are
most in need of development. In this way, a
new injustice added under the guise of caring for the
environment. In this case, too, one goes from bad to worse. Since the
effects of climate change will make themselves felt for a long time,
even if one were to take rigorous measures now, then
some countries with scarce resources will need help to
adapt to the effects that are already becoming visible and affecting
their economies. It remains certain that there are common but
differentiated responsibilities, simply because, as the
bishops of Bolivia have said, “the countries that benefit at the cost of a
huge greenhouse gas emissions have benefited from a high level
of industrialisation, have a greater responsibility to
contribute to solving the problems they have caused”.
