Thirty-first Sunday through the year. All Souls’ Day

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Opening word

In every Eucharist, we celebrate Christ’s resurrection.
We draw hope from his victory over death
and we live by his promise that death does not have the last word.
The Lord lifts us up from death and allows us to share
in full life beyond the limits of death.
When, the day after All Saints’ Day, we remember all the departed,
we dare to trust in God’s mercy
and hope that the light of resurrection surrounds them.
Let us now open our hearts to God’s Word
which gives comfort to those who grieve
and gives strength to those who mourn.

FIRST READING             Wis. 11,22-12,2

Thou dost have mercy on all, because Thou dost love all that exist.

From the book of Wisdom

Lord, all the earth is before Thee
as a speck of dust on the scales,
as an early dewdrop falling down to earth.
But Thou dost have mercy on all,
for Thou art able to do all things;
and Thou takest no notice of the sins of men,
that they may come to repentance.
For Thou dost love all that exist,
and abhor none of that which Thou hast created;
for would Thou hate anything, Thou wouldst not have created it.

How could anything continue to exist against Thy will,
how could preserve what Thou hast not made?
Yea, all things do Thou spare, for all things are Thine,
and Thou art full of love over all that lives!

Thy imperishable spirit is present in all that exists.
Therefore Thou dost punish sinners in moderation,
and remind them warningly of their sins,
that they may forsake their wickedness
and remain faithful to Thee, Lord.

Answer Psalm                Ps. 145(144) 1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13cd-14

Refrain
Your Name, my God, I want to glorify forever.

You I want to praise, my God and King,
glorify Your Name forever.
You I want to praise every day,
glorifying Your Name forever.

The Lord is full of love and compassion,
longsuffering and most gracious.
The Lord is concerned for every human being,
merciful to all that He made.

Your works will praise You, Lord,
thy pious shall praise Thee.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
thy power they proclaim.

The Lord is true in all His words
and holy in all He does.
The Lord sustains those who are in danger of falling,
raises up all who are stooped.

SECOND READING                      2 Thess. 1.11 – 2.2

The name of Christ shall be glorified in you, and you in Him.

From the holy apostle Paul’s second letter to the Christians of Thessalonica

Brothers and sisters,

Again and again we pray to our God,
that He will make you worthy of His calling
and bring all your good intentions and every act of your faith
with power to perfection.
Then the Name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you
– and you in Him –
by the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.

However, we must beseech you, brothers and sisters,
in connection with the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
and our reunion with Him
not to lose your reflection so soon.
Do not be alarmed
by prophecies or statements or a letter
supposedly coming from us, claiming
that the day of the Lord has arrived.

Gospel verse                       John 3:16

Alleluia.
So much did God love the world
that He gave His only begotten Son
that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                        Lk. 19, 1-10

The Son of Man has come to seek and save what was lost.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time, Jesus entered Jericho.
As He passed through it,
a certain Zacchaeus,
chief toll collector and a rich man,
to see who Jesus was.
But he did not succeed because of the crowd,
for he was small in stature.
To see Him anyway, he walked fast ahead
and climbed a wild fig tree
because Jesus would pass by there.

When Jesus came to that place
he looked up and said to him:
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must be a guest in your house.”
Zacchaeus came down quickly and received Him full of joy.
All saw this and noted morosely:
“He has gone to take up residence with a sinner!”

But Zacchaeus stepped up to the Lord and spoke:
“Lord, by this I donate half my property to the poor ;
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
i will give it back to him fourfold.”

Jesus spoke to him:
“Today salvation has come to this house ,
for this man too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

172. For poor countries, the eradication of misery and the
social development of their inhabitants must be a priority; at the same time,
they should examine the scandalous level of consumption in some privileged sectors
of their populations and better tackle corruption. Certainly,
they must also develop less polluting forms of energy production,
but for this they must be able to count on the help of the countries
that have grown very much at the expense of the current pollution of the planet.
Direct exploitation of abundant solar energy requires that
mechanisms and subsidies to be established so that developing countries
can have access to technology transfer, technical
assistance and financial resources, but always paying attention
to concrete circumstances, since “not always in an adequate
manner the cost of facilities with the context for which they are
designed, at its proper value”. The cost would be low
compared to the risk of climate change. In any case
it is first and foremost an ethical decision, based on the solidarity of
all peoples.
