Tuesday – Saint Carolus Borromeo, b.

St Carolus Borromeo was bishop of Milan.
Born 2 October 1538 and died 4 November 1584.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

A third part of the letter begins in chapter 12. Here begins the ‘parenesis’ or exhortation, which is a classic part of every letter. It comes into its proper place here, after the ‘doctrinal’ part of the letter: Surely we do not obey to earn God’s favours, but our obedience to God’s commandments is consequence and thanksgiving because of all that God has done and will do for us.

FIRST READING                Rom. 12, 5-16a
All of us together in Christ form one body.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome

Brothers and sisters,

We all together in Christ form one body;
but as individuals, each taken individually,
we depend on one another
as well as the limbs of the body.
The spiritual gifts we possess differ
according to the particular grace
bestowed on each of us.
Have ye received the gift of prophecy ,
use it in accordance with faith.
Have ye received the gift of service or of teaching,
apply yourselves to service or teaching.
He who has an uplifting word
should encourage others.
He who has something to hand out
give it away with mildness.
Whoever leads does it with zeal,
and whoever shows mercy do it with cheerfulness.
Your love should be unfeigned.
Hate the evil, be well-disposed towards the good.
Love one another warmly with brotherly affection.
Esteem others higher than yourself.
Do not let your zeal fade,
be fervent in spirit,
serve the Lord.
Let hope make you happy,
stand firm in tribulation, persevere in prayer.
Contribute for the needs of the saints,
practice hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you;
you must bless them instead of cursing them.
Rejoice with the joyful
and weep with those who weep.
Be united.
Arrange without haughtiness
in dealing with ordinary people.

INTERLUDIUM                Ps. 131(130), 1, 2, 3

With you, Lord, I am safe ;
protect me in your peace.

My heart is not haughty, Lord,
my eyes do not look conceited.
Nor do I aspire to great deeds
higher than I can reach.

The storms are calm within me
and peaceful is my spirit.
Like a child in a mother’s lap,
that’s how safe I feel.

Take refuge, Israel, in the Lord,
from now on forever.

ALLELUIA                    John 8.12

Alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord ;
he who follows Me shall possess the light of life.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                     Lk. 14, 15-24

Hurry into the streets and alleys of the city,
and urgently invite the people to come in,
for my house must become full.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time one of the table companions said to Jesus:

“Happy all who will have their meal in the Kingdom of God.”
He answered him:
´Someone gave a great meal and invited many guests.
At the hour of the meal he sent his servant
to say to the guests, Come, everything is ready.
But they all suddenly began to excuse themselves.
The first one made him say:
I have bought a field
and must necessarily go and see it;
please do excuse me.
A second said:
I have bought five span oxen and need to go and try them;
i do ask you to excuse me.
Yet another:
I got married so recently; therefore I cannot come.
On his return home
the servant conveyed all this to his master.
Now the master of the house ignited in anger and ordered his servant:
Hurry to the streets and alleys of the city
and bring the poor, infirm,
blind and lame into this place.
When the servant said to him:
Lord, what thou hast commanded has happened,
and still there is room,
the lord instructed his servant:
Go to the roads and courtyards
and urgently invite the people to come in,
for my house must become full.
I say to you:
None of the men who were first invited ,
shall taste of my banquet.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

174. We also mention the ocean governance system.
After all, although several international and regional conventions
have been in place, the fragmentation and absence of strict
regulation, control and sanction systems ultimately undermine all efforts of force. The growing problem of marine waste and marine protection remain a particular challenge. Ultimately, we need an agreement
on arrangements concerning the management of the whole range of so-called
global common goods.
