May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

The listing of all the names at the end of Paul’s letter is of great interest. Paul had never been to Rome, but the list shows that he has many friends there. In their house, Prisca and Aquila welcomed Christians to celebrate Eucharist. Of those first Christians it was said, “Look how they love one another!”. Can it be deduced from our attitudes, our lifestyle, how we love each other? How can we reflect, in little things, little by little, the simplicity and sobriety of that daily shared life of faith?

Brothers and sisters,
Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus
who have put their lives on the line for me ;
not only I am indebted to them
but also all the heathen congregations.
Salute likewise the congregation at their homes.
Greetings to my beloved Epénetus, Asia’s firstfruits before Christ.
salute Mary, who gave herself so much effort for you.
Salute Androníkus and Junias,
my compatriots and fellow prisoners,
men of distinction among the apostles,
who were Christians before me.
Greetings Ampliátus, my dear friend in the Lord.
Greetings Urban, our co-worker in the cause of Christ
and my beloved Stachys.
Greet each other with the holy kiss.
To you greet all the churches of Christ.
I, Tertius, who recorded this letter greet you in the Lord.
Gajus, host of me and of the whole Christian congregation,
Erastus, the administrator of the city finances
and our brother Quartus salute you.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen !
To Him who is able to confirm you
in the gospel of Jesus Christ which I preach
– according to the revelation of the secret
which for centuries has been concealed
but has now been revealed,
and according to the command of the eternal God
by means of prophetic writings
has been made known to all the heathen nations
to bring them to the obedience of faith –
to Him, the only, all-wise God be the glory
through Jesus Christ throughout the ages of ages!

When thou hast not been trustworthy
in the unrighteous mammon ,
who then shall entrust to thee the true good ?
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“Make your friends through the unrighteous mammon ,
so that they – when it comes to lose you –
take you into the eternal tents.
“He who is trustworthy in the smallest
is trustworthy also in the great ;
and he who is unjust in the smallest
is also unjust in the great.
“Art thou therefore not trustworthy
in the unjust mammon ,
who then shall trust thee with the true good ?
“If thou hast not been trustworthy
in managing another’s good ,
then who shall give thee what thou canst call thine own ?
“No servant can serve two masters ,
for he shall hate the one and love the other,
or adhere to the one and despise the other.
“Thou canst not serve God and mammon.”
The Pharisees, greedy for money as they were, heard all this
and they laughed at Him.
He spoke to them :
“Among men thou doest thyself as righteous ,
but God knows your heart.
“What men look up to is an abomination in God’s eyes.”

On caring for the common home
178. The drama of a politics focused on immediate results
also promoted by the consumer society, makes it
necessary to produce short-term growth. For the sake of electoral
interests, governments do not easily venture to irritate the population
with measures that may affect consumption levels
or jeopardise foreign investment. A short-sighted
power thinking inhibits the inclusion of a forward-looking environmental agenda
within the public agenda of governments. It forgets, for example, that “time over
space”, that it is more fruitful when we care about
promoting processes for the better rather than holding positions of power
occupy. Political grandeur manifests itself, when in difficult
moments, acting on grand principles and thinking of the
long-term common good. Political power has great
difficulty in incorporating this duty into a project of the nation.
