Boek met kaars 40

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Introduction

The end of the liturgical year is approaching.
This Sunday’s texts speak to us
about the anticipation of the end times.
The day of the Lord will settle once and for all
with the evil that seems omnipresent.
For those who believe, however, there is never any cause for doom.
The prophet Malachi, Paul and Jesus
warn against bigotry and panic
and exhort us to sober fortitude and trust.

FIRST READING               Mal. 3, 19-20a
For you the sun of righteousness rises.

From the prophet Malachi

Behold: the day is coming,
the day that burns like a furnace.
All the proud,
all who commit wickedness,
they all become stubble,
set on fire by the day that is coming
– so speaks the LORD of the heavenly powers –
so that from them
not a root, not a culm left.
But to you, who fear my name,
the sun of righteousness rises,
and with its wings it brings healing.
Thus speaks the LORD of the heavenly powers.

Responsorial                    Ps. 98(97) 5-6, 7-8, 9

Refrains
The Lord comes as judge of the nations.

Sing to the Lord by the zither,
with zither and psalters.
Let trumpet and trumpet sound
and rejoice before the Lord your king.

The sea agrees with all its beasts,
the earth with all that lives there.
The streams gurgle with acclaim,
the mountains jubilate along.

They salute the Lord, who comes near,
who approaches as judge of the earth.
Justly He governs the world,
the nations with equity.

SECOND READING                      2 Thess. 3, 7-12
If anyone will not work, neither will he eat.

From the holy apostle Paul’s second letter to the Christians of Thessalonica

Brothers and sisters,

How ye must follow us is well known to you;
we have shunned no work with you
and eaten no one’s bread without paying.
Day and night we have worked, with much effort and trouble
in order not to be a burden to any of you.
Not that we have no right to do so
but we wanted to set an example to follow.
Even when we were with you, we kept reminding you of this rule:
If someone does not want to work, he will not eat either.
For we have heard
that there are some who hang around unemployed
and shun all effort,
but interfere with everything.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
we command and admonish such people
that they should work regularly and earn their own living.

Verse for the gospel                   Lk 21, 28

Alleluia.
Lift up and lift up your heads,
for your salvation comes near.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                        Lk 21:5-19
By being steadfast, you will gain your life.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

In those days, some noted how the temple there adorned itself
with its fine stones and weaving gifts.
Then Jesus said:
“What ye see there:
A time will come
when no stone will be left on the other:
All shall be destroyed.”

They now asked Him:
“Master, when will that happen?”

But He said:
“Beware lest ye be led astray.
For many shall act in my Name
and they will say, It is I, and: The time is at hand.
Do not run after them.
And when ye hear of wars and disturbances,
do not be put off.
All that must happen first
but the end does not immediately follow.”

Then He spoke to them:
“There will be strife of people against people
and of kingdom against kingdom;
there shall be violent earthquakes ,
and famine and pestilence,
now here then there,
terrifying things
and in the sky terrific signs.
But even before all this happens
they will seize you and persecute you;
they will deliver thee to the synagogues and imprison thee,
bring you before kings and governors
for my Name’s sake.
It will end up for you in giving testimony.
Well, impress it on thee,
that then ye should not prepare your defence.
For I will give you a language and a wisdom
which none of thy adversaries
will be able to resist or contradict.
Thou shalt be overcome even by parents and brothers,
by kinsmen and friends
and some of you will have them put to death.
You will be an object of hatred to all
for the sake of my Name:
Not a hair of your head will be lost.
By being steadfast you will gain your life.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home

186. The 1992 Rio Declaration states that “where there is a
threat of serious or irreversible harm, the lack of full
scientific certainty [will] not be a reason to delay the
application of effective measures that prevent environmental damage”.
These precautionary measures allow for the protection of the weakest,
who have few means to defend themselves.
If objective information leads one to foresee serious and irreversible damage,
even if there were no indisputable evidence, then any
project should be stopped or modified. Thus, the burden of proof is
reversed, as in these cases it is necessary to provide objective and
conclusive evidence that the proposed activity will not cause serious
harm to the environment and all those living in it.
