Opening Word
Today we begin our pilgrimage to Christmas.
For four weeks, the prophet Isaiah will be our guide.
He is already setting our sights on the final destination
and outlines to us a vision of peace.
This perspective gives us courage to persevere
and not to give up when the going gets tough.
As we leave, we are also advised to be vigilant:
after all, the Lord Himself is coming to meet us.
How will He find us?
FIRST READING Isa. 2:1-5
The Lord gathers all nations into the eternal peace of the Kingdom of God.
Vision of Isaiah, the son of Amos,
about Judah and Jerusalem.
At the end of days
the mountain on which the temple of the LORD stands,
will rise above all the mountains
and tower above all hills.
All peoples will stream to it
and countless nations flock to it.
They will say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD ,
to the temple of Jacob’s God.
“He will show us his ways
and we will walk his paths.
“For out of Zion comes the Law,
the Word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
“Judge He will judge the nations,
judge the countless nations.
“They shall turn their swords into ploughshares,
their spears into sickles.
“No people shall yet draw sword against another,
and none shall learn to make war.
“House of Jacob, come,
Iet us walk in the light of the LORD.”
Answer Psalm Ps 122(121), 1-2, 3-4a, 4b-5, 6-7, 8-9
Refrain
Full of joy, we migrate to God’s house!
How happy was I when I was called:
We are going to God’s house!
Now my foot may enter Jerusalem
enter your gates.
Jerusalem, walled city,
so densely built:
To Thee do the tribes march,
the tribes of God’s people.
They go according to Israel’s custom
worship the name of God.
There stand the seats of justice,
the throne of David’s house.
Then pray for peace for Jerusalem:
That every one who loves you may be safe.
That unity may reign within thy walls,
in all thy houses rest.
For the sake of my brothers and my companions
i wish you peace;
for the sake of the house of our God
i pray for you for blessing.
SECOND READING Rom. 13:11-14
Our salvation is near.
Brothers and sisters,
Ye know
that the hour to awaken from sleep
has already arrived.
Now our salvation is nearer
than when we came to faith.
The night is coming to an end, the day is dawning.
So let us rid ourselves of the works of darkness
and arm ourselves with the light.
Let us behave properly
as in broad daylight,
and abstain from brawls and drinking bouts,
from fornication and debauchery, from strife and envy.
Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ
and cherish no more sinful lusts.
Verse for the gospel Ps 85 (84), 8
Alleluia.
Show us your mercy,
give us your salvation, O Lord,
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 24, 37-44
Be vigilant so that you may be prepared.
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“As it was in the days of Noah ,
so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
As the people in the days before the flood
went on eating and drinking,
with marrying and giving in marriage,
until the day Noah entered the ark,
and they suspected nothing
until the flood came and snatched all away:
So shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
Then there will be two in the field:
One will be taken away, the other left behind:
Two women will be grinding with the mill:
One will be taken away, the other left behind.
Be vigilant therefore,
for thou knowest not on what day thy Lord cometh.
Understand this:
If the owner of the house knew
at what hour of the night the thief would come,
he would remain vigilant and would not have his house broken into.
Be ye therefore also prepared,
because the Son of Man is coming at the hour
when ye expect it not.”

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
200. On the other hand, whatever technical solution the
sciences purport to provide will not be able to solve the
serious problems of the world, if humanity
loses its course, if the great motivations that make coexistence
sacrifice, goodness make possible, are forgotten. In any case, it will be
be necessary to appeal to the faithful in accordance
with their faith and not to contradict it with their actions,
it will be necessary to insist on reopening themselves to
the grace of God and draw deeply
from one’s own convictions regarding love, justice and peace. If
a poor understanding of our principles has sometimes led us to the
abuse of nature or a despotic domination of creation
by man or wars, injustice and violence,
then as believers we can acknowledge that in so doing we have lost the treasure of
wisdom that we should have been guarding, we have been unfaithful. Often
the culture through time has lacked such awareness of its own
ethical and spiritual heritage short-changed, but it is precisely the return to
its respective sources allows religions to
to respond better to current needs.
