Consideration
Like Simeon, Hanna looks forward to deliverance with hope and faith, prayer and intensity. To this expectation and promise she devoted herself completely and for long years. In the encounter with Jesus, as a second witness, Hanna confirms Simeon’s insight: Jesus is the liberator. She thanks God and speaks of Jesus to all who share in her expectation. After all, his coming means forgiveness of sin and the end of the power of evil. From now on, one knows the Father as He is. Specifically, the answer to this means turning away from every form of selfishness and aligning oneself with what is close to God’s heart. Then the Father’s love truly dwells in us. God’s grace and wisdom may also increase in us and make us inwardly strong. We will then affirm: The Lord reigns (Ps 96:10)
FIRST READING 1 Jn 2:12-17
He who does the will of God abides forever.
From the first letter of the holy apostle John
I write to you, children,
that your sins are forgiven
for the sake of the name of Jesus Christ.
I write unto you, fathers,
that you know Him
who was there from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
that ye have overcome the evil one.
Again, children,
i write to you that ye know the Father.
I write unto you, fathers,
that ye know Him
who was there from the beginning.
I write unto you, young men,
that ye are strong :
God’s word dwells in you
and ye have overcome the evil one.
Do not lose heart to the world
or to the things of the world!
If anyone loves the world
the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world
– the lust of lust
and the lust of the eyes
and the haughtiness of money –
it does not come from the Father
but from the world.
And that world passes away
with all its covetousness,
but he who does the will of God
abides forever.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 96(95), 7-8a, 8b-9, 10
The sky shines and the earth rejoices.
Homage the Lord, all tribes and nations,
hail the Lord for his glory and power,
hail the Lord for the glory of his Name.
Bring Him your sacrifice and enter His court,
go and worship Him in holy garb.
Tremble before the Lord, all the people of the earth,
Say to one another: The Lord reigns!
Unwaveringly He created the earth,
he governs the nations with equity.
ALLELUIA Hebr. 1, 1-2
Alleluia.
After God had once spoken many times and in many ways
had spoken to our fathers through the prophets,
he has now, at the end of time,
spoken to us through the Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 2:36-40
Hanna speaks of Jesus to all who are expecting the deliverance of Jerusalem
expect.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days there was a prophetess, Hanna,
a daughter of Fanuel, from the tribe of Asher.
She was very elderly
and after her youth she had lived with her husband for seven years.
Now she was a widow of eighty-four.
She stayed in the temple constantly
and served God day and night through fasting and prayer.
At this time she approached ,
thanked God and spoke of the child to all
who were expecting the deliverance of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the precepts of the Law of the Lord
they returned to Galilee, to their city of Nazareth.
The child grew up and increased in strength ;
it was filled with wisdom
and the grace of God rested on Him.

Laudato Si
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
230. The example of Saint Teresa of Lisieux invites us to “walk the
small path of love” and not miss an opportunity for a
kind word, a smile, a small gesture that spreads peace and friendship.
An integral ecology also consists
of simple everyday gestures, in which we reject the logic of violence
exploitation and selfishness. Conversely, the world of uninhibited
consumption is at the same time the world of the mistreatment of life in
all its forms.
