Fifth Sunday of the year

Boek met kaars 40

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation is intended to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, without exception,
can experience this joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Opening word

Every Sunday, through the celebration of the Eucharist,
we draw ever closer to Jesus Christ.
He has come to set us free.
He wants to flavour our lives with his Word and his Bread.
He wants to fill our hearts and our whole being with his light
and asks us to bear witness to him in this world.
At the beginning of this celebration, let us open our hearts to his grace and ask for his mercy.

FIRST READING            Isaiah 58, 7-10
Your light will shine like the dawn.

From the prophet Isaiah

This is what the Lord says:

“Share your bread with the hungry,
take the homeless and the homeless into your house,
clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn away from your own.

Then your light will shine like the dawn,
your healing will quickly appear;
your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Then you will call upon the Lord, and he will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say:

“When you remove oppression from your midst,
threatening fingers and slander,
when you open your heart to the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted,
then your light will shine in the darkness,
then your night will be like midday.”

RESPONSE PSALM      Psalm 112 (111), 4-5, 6-7, 8a and 9

Refrain
For the righteous, light dawns in the night.

He is a light in the night for the pious,
benevolent, merciful, just.
Good fortune comes to the man who gives and lends,
who conducts his affairs with honesty.

The righteous will remain steadfast forever,
and will be remembered eternally.
He does not fear bad news,
he continues to trust in the Lord without wavering.

He perseveres without fear,
he shares generously with the poor.
He will never lose his righteousness;
his power and prestige will increase more and more.

SECOND READING               1 Cor. 2, 1-5

I proclaim to you the testimony of Christ and his cross.

From the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Christians of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

When I came to proclaim the testimony of God to you,
I did not do so
with the power of eloquence or wisdom.
I resolved to bring you no knowledge
but rather bore witness to the power of the Spirit:
your faith was not to be based on human wisdom,
but on the power of God.

Verse before the Gospel                Jn 8, 12

Alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord.
Whoever follows me will have the light of life.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL        Mt 5, 13-16

You are the light of the world.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:

“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its flavour,
and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand, so that it gives light to all in the house.
Your light must shine before others,
so that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care for Our Common Home

22. These problems are closely linked to the throwaway culture, which affects both marginalised people and objects that quickly become rubbish.
For example, we should be aware that most of the paper produced is thrown away and not recycled.
We find it difficult to recognise that the functioning of natural ecosystems is exemplary: plants synthesise nutrients that feed herbivores; these, in turn, feed carnivores, which provide significant amounts of organic waste, giving rise to a new generation of crops. In contrast, the industrial system has not developed the capacity to process waste and reuse waste at the end of the production and consumption cycle.
A production cycle that guarantees resources for all and for future generations and that requires minimising the use of non-renewable resources, limiting consumption, maximising the efficiency of raw material use, reusing and recycling has not yet been introduced.
Addressing this issue would be a way to counteract the throwaway culture, which ultimately harms the entire planet, but we see that progress in this direction remains very limited.
