Second Sunday in Lent

Boek met kaars 40

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation is intended to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Opening words

For forty days we prepare ourselves for Easter night
when we will sing the light of the resurrection.
The liturgy of this Sunday
already offers us a glimpse of this Easter light.
On top of the mountain, Jesus changes his appearance,
his face shines like the sun,
and his clothes become as bright as the light.
During this Eucharistic celebration, Jesus invites us
to go with him up the mountain
and experience God’s presence intensely.
Let us open our hearts to his Word
and enjoy the light he gives us.

FIRST READING         Gen. 12, 1-4a
The calling of Abram, the father of the people of God.

From the Book of Genesis

In those days, the Lord said to Abram:
“Leave your country, your clan, and your family,
to the land that I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation.
“I will bless you and make your name great,
so that it will be a blessing.
“I will bless those who bless you,
but I will curse those who curse you.
“Through you, blessings will come to all the families of the earth.”

Then Abram set out,
as the Lord had commanded him.

Responsorial Psalm                Ps. 33(32), 4-5, 18-19, 20 , 22

Refrain
Give us, Lord, your mercy,
as we put our trust in you.

For the word of the Lord is true,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and righteousness;
the earth is full of his steadfast love.

The eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
who hope in his steadfast love,
to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.

We place all our hope in the Lord,
He is our help and our shield.
Let your mercy, Lord, descend upon us
as our trust goes out to You.

SECOND READING                  2 Tim. 1, 8b-10

God calls us and gives us light.

From the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy

Beloved,

Share in suffering for the gospel,
through the power of God,
who saved us
and called us with a holy calling,
not on the basis of our merits,
but according to the free decision of his grace,
granted to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.
Now his grace has been revealed
through the appearance of our Saviour, Christ Jesus,
who has destroyed death
and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Verse before the Gospel

Praise and honour be to you, Lord Jesus.
From a resplendent cloud
the voice of the Father was heard:
This is my beloved Son,
listen to him.
Praise and honour be to you, Lord Jesus.

GOSPEL                 Mt . 17, 1-9

His face began to shine like the sun.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

At that time, Jesus took
Peter, James and his brother John with him
and brought them up a high mountain,
where they were alone.
He was transfigured before their eyes:
His face began to shine like the sun
and his clothes became as white as light.
Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
talking with him.

Peter spoke up and said to Jesus:
“Lord, it is good that we are here.
“If you wish, I will put up three tents here,
one for you,
one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
He had not yet finished speaking
when a bright cloud overshadowed them
and a voice came from the cloud:
“This is my Son, the Beloved,
in whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.”
When they heard this,
the disciples fell prostrate,
seized with a great fear.

But Jesus came to them,
touched them and said,
“Get up, and do not be afraid.”
When they looked up, they saw no one but Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them:
“Tell no one what you have seen
until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCIS

On Care for Our Common Home

The decline in the quality of human life and
social decay
43. If we take into account the fact that a human being is a creature of this world, that he has a right to live and be happy, and moreover has a special dignity, we cannot fail to consider the effects of environmental degradation, the current model of development and the throwaway culture on life.
