Invitation
May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation is intended to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
Today marks the beginning of John’s time, which will last for many weeks. We hear a typical Johannine story with a double meaning: the healing of a sick person. The physical healing refers to something deeper, something spiritual. Faith brings life, not only physical life, but also spiritual life: it gives eternal life. In verse 48, it becomes clear that Jesus rejects any sensation surrounding his actions. Sensation does not lead to faith. Longing for miracles is not healthy. True faith looks through the sign to the deepest level: who is Jesus at his core? The faithful answer is: the sent one, the Son of the Father.
Who is He in the deepest sense for me?
FIRST READING Isaiah 65, 17-21
The sound of weeping and the sound of crying will never be heard again.
From the Prophet Isaiah
Thus says the Lord:
“In those days I will create
a new heaven
and a new earth.
“The former things
will not be remembered
or come to mind,
but you will be delighted and rejoice
forever in what I create.
“For I will make Jerusalem a delight
and a glory of its people.
“I will rejoice over Jerusalem
and be glad in my people.
“The sound of weeping and the sound of crying
will never be heard there again.
“There will be no more children
who die after a few days,
and there will be no more old men,
who will not live out their days.
“For there they will die young,
even if they reach a hundred years,
and whoever does not reach a hundred
will be accursed.
“Then they will build houses and live in them,
they will plant vines and eat their fruit.”
Thus says the Almighty Lord.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 30(29), 2, 4, 5-6, 11-12a, 13b
I will praise you, Lord, for you have delivered me,
you have not let my enemies triumph.
Lord, you have redeemed my soul from the realm of the dead,
you have freed me from those who go down to the grave.
Sing to the Lord with me, all his faithful ones,
and give thanks to his Name, which is exalted.
His anger lasts but a moment, but his mercy lasts a lifetime,
the evening brings weeping, the morning brings joy.
Lord, hear me and have mercy on me,
my God, stand by me with your help.
You have turned my mourning into a dance of joy,
I will praise you, Lord my God, forever.
VERSES BEFORE THE GOSPEL John 3, 16
For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish.
GOSPEL John 4 ,43-54
Go, your son lives.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
At that time, Jesus left Samaria and went to Galilee.
He himself had declared
that a prophet is not honoured in his own hometown.
When he came to Galilee,
the Galileans welcomed him,
because they had seen everything
He had done at the festival in Jerusalem.
They themselves had been at the festival.
So He came again to Cana in Galilee,
where He had turned water into wine.
There was a royal official
whose son was ill in Capernaum.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee,
he went to Him and asked Him
to come and heal his son,
for he was dying.
“Unless you see signs,”
Jesus said to him,
“you will not believe.”
Then the court official said,
“Sir, come before my child dies!”
Jesus replied:
“Go, your son lives.”
The man believed what Jesus said and went on his way.
His servants met him on the way
with the news that his child was alive.
He asked them at what hour the recovery had taken place,
and they told him:
“Yesterday, at the seventh hour, his fever left him.”
Then the father realised
that it had happened at the very hour when Jesus had said:
Your son is alive.
He himself and his whole family believed.
This second sign Jesus performed
after he had come from Judea to Galilee.

POPE FRANCIS
On Care for Our Common Home
58. In some countries, there are positive examples of results in improving the environment, such as the clean-up of some rivers that have been polluted for so many decades, the restoration of original forests or the beautification of landscapes with environmental restoration works or construction projects of great aesthetic value, progress in producing non-polluting energy,
and in improving public transport. These actions do not solve the world’s problems, but they do confirm that human beings are still capable of positive intervention.
Because it is created to love, acts of generosity, solidarity and care inevitably flourish amid its limitations.
