Consideration Jesus does not want people to get the impression that He is committed to establishing a worldly kingdom. He knows that the people are on the verge of making Him a ‘real’ king, who will free them from oppressive powers. After all, that is how they interpret the concept of ‘Messiah’. Jesus, however, has something quite different in mind from a worldly kingdom of which He would become the ruler. He knows that He must fulfil a very different mission. The multiplication of the loaves and the discourse on the bread of eternal life show the direction His mission will take; the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves is, just like the Eucharist we celebrate daily, a gesture of pure, boundless – divine – love! Jesus proclaims not an earthly, but a heavenly kingdom. FIRST READING                     Acts 5, 34–42 They went away rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonour for the name of Jesus. From the Acts of the Apostles In those days there was a Pharisee in the Sanhedrin, Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was held in high esteem by the whole people. He had the apostles brought out for a moment. Then he said: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you are about to do to these men. “For before our time, Theudas arose, who claimed to be someone of importance, and to whom a group of about four hundred men attached themselves. “He was put to death, and all who had put their trust in him were scattered. “After him, in the days of the census, Judas the Galilean arose and drew a large crowd after him, and all who trusted in him were scattered. “As for our case, I say to you: Do not interfere with these people but let them go their own way. “If this plan or this work originates from human beings, it will come to nothing. “But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them; otherwise, you may find yourselves opposing God.” They were persuaded by him. They summoned the apostles, had them flogged, forbade them to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of Jesus’ name. They continued to teach daily in the temple and in the homes, proclaiming the Good News that Jesus is the Messiah. Interludium                      Ps . 27(26), 1, 4, 13-14 One thing I ask of the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. or: Alleluia. The Lord is my light and my guide, whom shall I fear? : The Lord is the shield of my life, whom shall I be afraid of? : One thing only do I ask of the Lord, nothing else will I desire : That I may dwell in God’s house all the days of my life. That I may experience the Lord’s kindness, and see his temple again with my own eyes. I trust that, whilst I still live, I shall experience the Lord’s blessings. Look to the Lord and stand firm, be of good courage and trust in the Lord. ALLELUIA Alleluia. Christ rose from the tomb and became a Light for all whom He redeemed with His blood. Alleluia. GOSPEL                       John   6, 1-15 He had the loaves and the fish distributed among the people sitting there, as much as they wanted. From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John In those days, Jesus went to the other side of the lake of Galilee, near Tiberias. A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs He performed for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain, and sat down there with His disciples. It was just before the Passover, the feast of the Jews. When Jesus looked up and saw that a large crowd was coming towards Him, He asked Philip: “How are we to buy bread to feed all these people?” – He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do. – Philip answered Him: “If everyone is to have even a small piece, two hundred denarii worth of bread will not be enough.” One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, remarked: “There is a boy here with five barley loaves and two fish, but what is that among so many?” But Jesus said: “Have the people sit down.” For there was plenty of grass there. So they sat down; the number of men was about five thousand. Then Jesus took the loaves and, having given thanks, had them distributed among the people sitting there, as well as the fish, as much as they wanted. When they had eaten their fill, He said to His disciples: “Now gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing is wasted.” They gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves, which the people had left over after eating. When the people saw the sign He had performed, they said: “This is surely the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Realising that they intended to seize Him to take Him away and proclaim Him king, Jesus withdrew once more to the mountains, all alone.

On care for our common home

A universal community 89. The creatures of this world must not be regarded as a good without an owner: “Yet you preserve all things, because they are yours, you Lord, who loves all that lives” (Wisdom 11:26). This leads to the conviction that we are all, as beings of the universe and created by the same Father, bound together by invisible ties and form a kind of universal family, a sublime community that inspires us to a holy, loving and humble respect. I would like to remind you that “God has bound us so closely to the world around us that the desertification of the soil is, as it were, a sickness for everyone, and we may lament the extinction of a species as if it were a mutilation”.
