May I take this opportunity to draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation aims to share with you the joy of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
Jesus will undoubtedly have Judas in mind, who will soon leave the group. He may also be thinking of all those who will refuse to continue on the path without Him. He wishes to warn and arm his disciples: they will be persecuted, and they will have to stand firm in the face of that persecution. The Lord does not, therefore, want his followers to be a docile flock of sheep with a naïve, childlike attachment to their master; on the contrary, they must press on, and not allow themselves to be swept away by those who take to their heels when difficult times arise. How far are we willing to go for the Gospel?
FIRST READING Acts 13, 13–25
From the descendants of David, God raised up Jesus the Saviour.
From the Acts of the Apostles
Paul’s party then set out from Paphos;
and went to Perga in Pamphylia;
there John left them
and returned to Jerusalem.
From Perga they travelled on
and reached Antioch in Pisidia,
where on the Sabbath they entered the synagogue
and took their places.
After the reading of the Law and the Prophets,
the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them:
“Men and brothers,
if you have a word of encouragement for the people,
speak.”
Paul stood up, motioned with his hand and said:
“Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen”.
“The God of our people Israel chose our forefathers,
and made the people great whilst they were in Egypt,
and brought them out of there with a mighty hand.
“For about forty years,
He cared for them in the wilderness;
after which He destroyed seven nations in Canaan,
and gave them the land to possess.
“This spanned some four hundred and fifty years.
“After that, He gave them judges:
this lasted until the time of the prophet Samuel.
“Thereafter, they asked for a king,
and God gave them Saul, the son of Kish,
a man of the tribe of Benjamin:
for forty years.
“After He had rejected him,
He raised David to be their king.
“Of him He gave this testimony:
I have found David, the son of Jesse,
a man after my own heart,
who will carry out my will in all things.
“From his descendants God
has, as promised,
brought forth a Saviour for Israel,
Jesus;
after John, before his ministry began,
had preached a baptism of repentance
to all the people of Israel.
“When John was nearing the end of his ministry, he said:
‘I am not who you think I am;
but after me comes one
whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’”
REFRAIN Ps. 89(88), 2-3, 21-22, 25, 27;
;
I will sing of your loving-kindness, O Lord,
and proclaim your faithfulness to every generation.
You have said: ‘My favour shall endure for ever,
the heavens are the foundation of my faithfulness.’
I have sought out my servant David
and anointed him with my holy oil;
as a sign that my hand shall always uphold him
and that my arm shall give him strength.
My faithfulness and my mercy shall guide him,
my Name shall grant him victory.
He shall call upon Me: ‘You are my Father,
my God, the rock of my salvation.’
ALLELUIA Rom. 6, 9
Alleluia.
Christ, having risen once from the dead,
dies no more;
death has no power over Him.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John 13, 16-20
Whoever receives the one I send receives Me.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
After Jesus had washed the feet of his disciples,
He said to them:
“Truly, truly, I say to you:
a servant is not greater than his master,
nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
“If you realise this,
blessed are you if you act upon it.
“I cannot say this of all of you.
“I know whom I have chosen,
but the Scripture must be fulfilled:
‘He who eats my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
“I tell you this now, before it happens,
so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am.
“Truly, truly, I say to you:
whoever receives the one I will send
receives Me,
and whoever receives Me
receives the One who sent Me.”

On Care for Our Common Home
The human roots of the ecological crisis
101. It is of no use to us to describe the symptoms if we do not recognise the
human origins of the ecological crisis. There is a
way of life and human behaviour that falls short and contradicts reality
to such an extent that it destroys it. Why can we not
to pause and reflect on this? I therefore propose that we focus on the prevailing technocratic paradigm
and the place that humanity and its actions occupy in the world within it.
