Saturday – St Athanasius, Bishop

Patriarch of Alexandria
Opponent of Arianism

Invitation

May I draw your attention to:
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation aims to share the joy of the Gospel with you.
Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration:

The disciples may think they already know Jesus inside out. But is that really possible? We never cease to discover new facets of Jesus. A complete understanding of who Jesus is leads to the discovery of his divine identity and of his intimate relationship with his Father. That is the focus today. Are we close enough to Jesus to get to know him deeply? Are we truly open to the mystery of his life, his death and his resurrection? What can we do in our personal lives to get to know him fully?

FIRST READING                Acts 13:44-52
From now on we turn to the Gentiles.

From the Acts of the Apostles

On the following Sabbath, almost the whole city gathered
to listen to the word of God.
When they saw this great crowd,
the Jews were filled with jealousy,
and they respondedto Paul’steachingwith mockery.
Then Paul and Barnabas declared boldly:
‘It was to you that the word of God had to be proclaimed first,
but since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.
For this is the commandment of the Lord to us:
I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.
When the Gentiles heard this,
they rejoiced and glorified the word of God,
and all who were destined for eternal life
accepted the faith.
The word of the Lord spread throughout the region,
but the Jews incited the God-fearing women
from the leading families
and the prominent citizens of the city
against Paul and Barnabas,
and drove them out of their region.
They shook the dust from their feet,
as a sign that they had broken with them,
and went to Iconium.
The disciples, however, were filled with joy
and with the Holy Spirit.

INTERLUDIUM                       Ps . 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

The whole earth has seen
what our God has done for us.

Sing to the Lord a new song
for He has done marvellous things.
His hand has shown its power,
the might of His holy arm

He made known to us His benefits,
His justice to the nations.
Once again His goodness and faithfulness were revealed
in favour of the house of Israel.

The whole earth saw
what our God has done for us.
Glorify the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia
He who called all things into being
and had mercy on us, his people
He is risen, Christ the Lord!
Alleluia

GOSPEL                        John 14:7-14
Whoever sees me sees the Father.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
‘If you know me, you know my Father too.
‘You already know him and see him.’
Then Philip said:
‘Lord, show us the Father;
that is enough for us.’ And Jesus replied:
‘I have been with you all this time, and you still do not know me, Philip?
‘Whoever sees me sees the Father.
‘How can you then say:
Show us the Father?
‘Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words I speak to you, I do not speak of My own accord,
but it is the Father,
abiding in Me, who does His work.
Believe Me:
I am in the Father and the Father is in Me.
Or believe because of the works.
Truly, truly, I say to you:
whoever believes in Me
will also do the works that I do.
Indeed, he will do even greater works
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in My name,
I will do
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask Me anything in My name,
I will do it.

Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On Care for Our Common Home

103. Technical science, when properly directed, is capable of:
not only bringing about truly important things to improve the quality
of human life, from household
items to major means of transport, bridges, buildings and public spaces.
It is also capable of producing beauty and enabling human beings,
immersed in the material world, to make the ‘leap’ into the world of beauty.
Can one deny the beauty of an aeroplane or of certain skyscrapers?
There are precious works of art and music that have been created,
because people have resorted
to new technical instruments. Thus, in the technician’s quest
for beauty and in those who behold this beauty, the
leap is made towards a truly human beauty.
