Consideration
Today we hear how Jesus commends his disciples to the Father in prayer. Yet we are inclined to think that, if anyonedid not needto pray, it was surely Jesus! He who was one with the Father, who would send the Holy Spirit as a helper… And yet the evangelists testify in various places that Jesus prayed, sometimes for hours on end. He also urges us to pray, persistently, without much ado but with confidence, in spirit and in truth. Our prayer lies at the heart of church life.
FIRST READING Acts 20, 17–27
My ministry is coming to an end, and the task I received from the Lord Jesus.
From the Acts of the Apostles.
In those days, Paul sent a messenger from Miletus to Ephesus
to summon the elders of that church.
When they had come to him,
he addressed them thus:
“You know how I
from the very first day I came into Asia,
have lived among you all this time;
how I have served the Lord in all humility,
amid tears,
and in trials
which befell me through the attacks of the Jews;
how I have not neglected to proclaim and teach you
anything that might be of benefit,
both in public and in your homes,
whilst I urged Jews and Greeks
to turn to God
and believe in our Lord Jesus.
“And now I find myself,
bound by the Spirit as I am,
on my way to Jerusalem,
without knowing what will happen to me there;
only the Holy Spirit assures me from city to city
that chains and afflictions await me.
“But I do not value my life in the least for my own sake,
so long as I may finish my course,
and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus,
to bear witness to the gospel of God’s grace.
“And now I know that you will no longer see my face,
all of you among whom I have gone about,
preaching the Kingdom.
“Therefore I declare to you today,
that I am innocent of the blood of any man.
“For I have not held back anything
from proclaiming to you the full scope of God’s counsel.
RESPONSORIAL Ps. 68(67), 10-11, 20-21
Sing now to God, kingdoms of the earth.
or:Alleluia.
A nourishing rain fell from heaven,
Thou hast refreshed Thy weary inheritance.
There your flock has found its resting place,
which you had prepared for it in your goodness.
Praise be to the Lord, day after day:
He bears our burdens, the God of our salvation.
For our God is a God who saves,
the Lord our God delivers us from death.
GOSPEL John 17, 1-11a
Father, glorify your Son.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time, Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
“Father, the hour has come.
“Glorify your Son,
so that the Son may glorify you.
“For you have given him authority over all people
to grant eternal life
to all whom you have given him.
“And this is eternal life:
that they may know you, the one true God,
and the one whom you have sent, Jesus Christ.
“I have glorified You on earth,
by completing the work You gave Me to do.
“Now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence
and give Me the glory
which I had with You before the world began.
“I have revealed Your Name
to the people You gave Me from the world.
“They were Yours;
You have given them to Me;
and they have kept Your word.
“Now they know that everything You have given Me comes from You.
“For the message which You have given Me,
I have given to them,
and they have received it
and have truly recognised that I came forth from You,
and they have believed that You sent Me.
“I pray for them.
“I do not pray for the world,
but for those whom You have given Me,
for they are Yours.
“All that is Mine is Yours, and what is Yours is Mine.
“Thus I am glorified in them.
“I am no longer in the world;
yet they remain in the world whilst I come to You.”

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCIS
On Care for Our Common Home
120. Since everything is interconnected, the defence of nature is
equally incompatible with the justification of abortion. An educational
approach that leads to the acceptance of the vulnerable around us,
who are sometimes a nuisance or a hindrance, seems unworkable if one does not offer protection to a human embryo, even though its arrival brings with it inconvenience and difficulties: “If the personal and social sense of welcoming a new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance useful to social life also wither away”
