Introduction
Today, on the day after Pentecost, we celebrate Mary as Mother of the Church.
Yesterday we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit, who set the disciples in motion.
Mary was in their midst, praying and encouraging them.
Just as she was there for the first community of believers,
so she is there for us today.
She reminds us that the Church is not a building, but a family
in which we support one another as brothers and sisters, with her as our motherly guide.
FIRST READING Acts 19, 1b-6a
Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?
From the Acts of the Apostles
In those days, Paul, having travelled through the interior, came to Ephesus.
There he met some disciples and asked them:
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?”
They replied:
“We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Then he said: “How then were you baptised?”
They replied: “With the baptism of John.”
Paul continued:
“John baptised as a sign of repentance,
but he told the people
that they must believe in the One who came after him, that is, Jesus.”
When they heard this,
they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.
After Paul had laid his hands on them,
the Holy Spirit came upon them.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 104(103), 1ab, 24, 27-28, 30-31.
When You send Your Spirit, life returns,
then You renew Your creation.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
how great You are, Lord my God!
How many are the works You have done, Lord,
and all made with wisdom,
the earth is full of Your creatures.
And all these creatures look to You,
that You may feed them in due season.
What You scatter for them they gather,
they are satisfied when You open Your hand.
But when You send Your Spirit, life returns,
then You renew Your creation.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever,
May He find His joy in all His creatures.
ALLELUIA John 14:16
Alleluia.
The Father will, at my prayer,
give you another Helper,
to remain with you forever.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John 14, 15-17
The Spirit of truth will remain with you forever.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
“Then the Father, at my request,
will give you another Advocate to be with you forever:
the Spirit of truth,
whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees nor knows him.
“You know him, for he remains with you and will be in you.”

On Care for Our Common Home
126. Let us also draw on the long monastic tradition. At the beginning, it
in a sense favoured a flight from the world by seeking to
distance itself from the decadence of the city. That is why
the monks sought out the desert, convinced that it was the suitable place
to recognise the presence of God. Subsequently, Saint Benedicto of Nursia
wished for his monks to live in community,
combining prayer and study with manual labour (Ora et labora). This
introduction of manual labour imbued with spiritual significance proved
to be revolutionary. People learnt to seek growth and sanctification in
an interweaving of reflection and labour. This way of experiencing labour
enables us to care for and respect the environment,
and imbues our relationship with the world with a healthy simplicity.
