This invitation aims to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Consideration
In Peter’s letter, the Old Testament prophets and the evangelists are mentioned in the same breath. The author wishes above all to emphasise the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. The salvation that has come through Christ was foretold and fulfilled. Therefore, we too must live differently. The second part of this reading contains advice on Christian conduct and provides its foundation.

FIRST READING                           1Pet. 1, 10–16

The prophets prophesied about the grace that was destined for you.
Therefore, be sober
and set your whole hope on that grace.

From the first letter of Saint Peter the Apostle

Brothers and sisters,

The prophets themselves searched and inquired carefully
about the salvation of your souls,
as they prophesied about the grace that was to be yours.
They wondered what time and circumstances it was that the Spirit of Christ within them was revealing,
when He foretold all the suffering that would come upon Christ
and the subsequent glorification.
But it was revealed to them
that they were to entrust this message to you, not to themselves.
And now this message has been openly proclaimed to you through the preachers of the Gospel,
in the power of the Holy Spirit, Who has been sent down from heaven.
These are mysteries which even the angels long to understand.

Therefore, be alert and active,
be sober-minded,
and set your hope entirely on the grace
which will be yours when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Obey the truth,
no longer yielding to the passions
that ruled your lives in the days of your ignorance.
He who has called you is holy.
Be holy as He is,
in all your conduct,
for it is written:
‘Be holy,
for I am holy.’

INTERLUDIUM                    Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3c-4

The Lord has made known His benefits to us.

Sing to the Lord a new song,
for He has done marvellous deeds.
His hand has been mighty,
the power of his holy arm.

He has made known his benefits to us,
his justice to the nations.
Once again his goodness and faithfulness have been shown,
in favour of the house of Israel.

The whole earth has seen,
what our God has done for us.
Glory to the Lord, all nations,
be glad, rejoice and sing.

ALLELUIA                       1 Pet. 1, 25

Alleluia.
The word of the Lord remains for ever;
and this word is the message
which has been proclaimed to you in the Gospel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  Mark 10, 28-31

Whoever follows me will receive a hundredfold,
and in the world to come, eternal life.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that time, Peter spoke up and said to Jesus:
“Behold, we have left everything to follow You.”
Jesus replied:
“Truly, I say to you:
there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters,
mother, father, children or fields
for My sake and for the sake of the Good News,
but receives a hundredfold now, in this age, in houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields,
even if it be accompanied by persecutions,
and in the age to come, eternal life.
“Many who are first will be last,
and many who are last will be first.”

Laudato Si

Encyclical of

Pope Francis

On Care for Our Common Home

127. We maintain that “the human person is the designer, the centre and the goal of
the whole of socio-economic life”. When, nevertheless, the
human person loses the capacity to contemplate and respect,
the conditions are created whereby the concept of work is
distorted. One must always bear in mind that the human person is at the same time “
capable of being the responsible agent of his own material betterment,
his moral progress and the full fulfilment of his spiritual
destiny”. Work should be the domain for this
multifaceted personal development, in which many dimensions of life
come into play: creativity, planning for the future, the development of
abilities, the practice of values, communication with others, and an
attitude of reverence. That is why contemporary society demands more
than just the limited interests of businesses and a questionable economic
rationality; it demands that “the goal of providing all people with access
to work be pursued as a priority”.
