Monday – St Justin, March

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation aims to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

CONSIDERATION

The Second Epistle of Peter does not have the same significance as the first, but remains important nonetheless as a document from the beginning of the second century. In eight verses, we find the word ‘knowledge’ (gnosis) five times. But true knowledge is directed towards a devout life and grounded in faith in the power of Christ, which is expressed in concrete deeds, in brotherly love. This remains relevant even today.

FIRST READING                    2 Peter 1, 1-7

Christ has brought to fulfilment for us his glorious and priceless promises,
through which we have come to share in the divine nature.

The beginning of the second letter of Saint Peter the Apostle

Simon Peter,
servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
to those who,
through the goodness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ,
share with us the privilege of the same faith.
Grace to you,
and peace in abundance,
through the knowledge of our Lord!

For everything necessary for life and godliness,
His divine power has granted to us,
through the knowledge of Him,
through which you have become partakers of God’s very nature,
having escaped the corruption of the world caused by selfish desires.
Therefore, make every effort to add to your faith virtue,
to virtue knowledge,
to knowledge self-control,
steadfastness with godliness,
godliness with brotherly affection,
and brotherly affection with love for all.

INTERLUDIUM                           Ps. 91(90), 1-2, 14-15, 16

For you, the Lord is: my God, in whom I trust.

You who are sheltered by the Most High,
and who dwell in the shadow of the Almighty,
for you, the Lord is: my refuge, my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.

I will deliver those who trust in Me,
and I will protect those who acknowledge Me.
When he calls upon Me, I will hear him,
I will help him in every time of need,
I will save him and honour him.

I will fulfil his days,
he shall experience my blessing.

ALLELUIA                   1  Thess. 2, 13

Alleluia.
Receive the divine word of the preaching,
not as a word of men
but as what it truly is:
the word of God.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                               Mark  12, 1-12

The vine-growers killed the beloved son
and cast him out of the vineyard.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

At that time, Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes and the elders in parables:
“There was once a man who planted a vineyard,
put a fence round it,
dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower;
then he leased it to some vine-growers;
and he went on a journey.
At the appointed time he sent a servant to the vine-growers
to receive from them his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
But they seized him, mistreated him,
and sent him away empty-handed.
So he sent another servant to them.
But they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully.
Again he sent one, but they killed him;
and so several others,
whom they mistreated and killed.
He now had no one left but his beloved son.
He sent him to them last,
thinking:
Surely they will spare my son.
But the vine-growers said to one another:
This is the heir;
come, let us kill him,
then the inheritance will be ours.
They seized him, killed him,
and threw him out of the vineyard.
What then will the owner of the vineyard do?
He will come,
put the vine-growers to death,
and give the vineyard to others.
Have you not read this passage:
The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
This was done by the Lord’s command,
and it is marvellous in our eyes.”

They were now looking for a way to get hold of Him,
but they were afraid of the people, for they realised
that the parable He had told applied to them.
So they left Him alone and went away.

On Care for Our Common Home

133. It is difficult to make a general judgement on the development of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in plants and animals for medical
purposes or in agriculture, as they can vary greatly and may require different considerations.
On the other hand, the risks should not always be attributed to the technology itself,
but to its inadequate or excessive application.
In fact, genetic mutations are oftencaused by nature
itself. Nor are human-induced mutations a modern phenomenon.
The domestication of animals, the cross-breeding of species

and other ancient and universally accepted practices may fall within
these considerations. It is worth recalling that the onset of
scientific developments concerning transgenic crops
was the observation of bacteria that naturally and spontaneously
change in a plant’s genome. Nevertheless,
these processes in nature proceed at a slow pace, which cannot be compared
with the speed imposed by current technological progress,
even when this progress is based on scientific
developments
spanning centuries.
