Tuesday: Saints Marcellinus and Peter, March

Born in the third century. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian,
both died as martyrs on 2 June 304 in Rome.

Invitation

May I take this opportunity to draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation aims to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

This Epistle of Peter is not only directed against false Gnostic teachers whose many speculations no longer have any connection with concrete action. If one reads the entire epistle, one sees that it is also directed against the godless who go their own way. They say: the promised Day of the Lord is not coming. Let us rather make the most of it now. There is an exhortation to stand firm and, in the meantime, to live blamelessly.

FIRST READING            2 Pet. 3, 12–15a, 17–18

We are looking forward to new heavens and a new earth.

From the Second Letter of Saint Peter the Apostle

Brothers and sisters,

Look forward to and hasten the coming of the day of God,
when the heavens will be set ablaze
and the elements will melt away in the heat of the fire.
But according to the Lord’s promise,
we look forward to new heavens
and a new earth,
where righteousness will dwell.

In this hope, beloved, you must strive
to appear before Him spotless and blameless,
at peace with God.
And regard the delay
which the Lord grants you in His long-suffering
as a grace for salvation.

Friends,
you have therefore been warned.
Take care that you are not led astray
by the ways of the ungodly;
do not compromise your stance.
Grow in the grace and knowledge
of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To Him be the glory,
now and for evermore!

INTERLUDE                 Ps. 90(89), 2, 3-4, 10, 14, 16

You, Lord, have always been our refuge
for every generation anew.

Before the mountains were born,
before the earth was brought forth,
You, God, are from everlasting to everlasting.

What is mortal returns to dust,
Thou sayest: return, child of man!
For Thee a thousand years are but a day,
like yesterday which is already past,
an hour of sleep in the night.

The span of our life is seventy years,
or if we are very strong, eighty.
Most of it is still torment and care,
and swiftly comes the hour of departure.

Grant us from this moment on Your richest blessing,
and let our whole life be happy.
Show Your servants what You are capable of,
and reveal Your glory to their children.

Alleluia                  2 Tim. 1, 10b

Alleluia.
Our Saviour Jesus Christ has destroyed death,
and brought to light eternal life
through the Gospel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL           Mk. 12, 13-17

Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s,
and to God what is God’s.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

At that time,
the chief priests, the scribes and the elders,
sent some Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus,
to trap Him.
They came to Him and asked:
“Teacher, we know that You are sincere,
and do not show partiality to anyone,
but teach the way of God in truth.
Is it lawful
to pay tax to Caesar or not?
Shall we pay it or not?”
But Jesus, perceiving their hypocrisy, replied:
“Why are you trying to trap Me?
Bring Me a denarius, and I will see.”
They did so.
Jesus then asked them:
“Whose image and inscription are on this coin?”
They replied:
“The Emperor’s.”
Then Jesus said to them:
“Give to the Emperor what is the Emperor’s,
and to God what is God’s.”
And they were amazed at Him.

On Care for Our Common Home

134. Although we do not have definitive proof regarding the
harm that genetically modified crops might cause to humans,
and in some regions their use has brought about economic growth
that has helped to resolve certain problems,
significant difficulties are encountered that must not be downplayed.
In many regions, the introduction of these crops has led to a concentration
of productive land in the hands of a few, due to the “gradual disappearance
of small-scale producers, who, as a result of the loss of agricultural land,
have been forced to withdraw from direct production”.
The most vulnerable among them become casual labourers, and many
farm workers eventually move to squalid housing in the cities.
The expansion of these crops destroys the complex fabric of ecosystems,
reduces diversity in production and
affects the present or future of regional economies.
In various countries, there is a tendency towards the development
of oligopolies in the production of seeds and other products necessary for cultivation;
and dependence is worsening, particularly with regard to the production of sterile seeds,
whilst ultimately farmers could be obliged to purchase them from the producing companies.
