Consideration We bear the difficulties we encounter in union with Christ. He too was not spared suffering. Christ is a source of comfort for us. For in Him, God shows just how much He stands by vulnerable people. Jesus also proclaims this in the Beatitudes: true and deepest comfort therefore comes from God. Whoever trusts in Him may therefore be called blessed. That person can then, in turn, treat their fellow human beings as God treats people: He ensures that your foot does not stumble; He does not sleep, but watches over you. (Ps 121) FIRST READING                           1 Kings 17, 1-6 Elijah in the service of the Lord, the God of Israel. From the First Book of Kings In those days Elijah the Tishbite of Gilead said to Ahab: “As the Lord lives, the God of Israel, whom I serve: there shall be neither dew nor rain in the coming years, unless I say so.” And the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave this place, go eastwards and hide in the valley of Kerith, which flows into the Jordan. “You may drink from the stream, and I have commanded the ravens to provide you with food there.” Elijah did as the Lord had said; and went to live in the valley of Kerith, which flows into the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat morning and evening, and he drank from the stream. He began to speak and taught them thus: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you, persecute you, and falsely accuse you of all kinds of evil for my sake: “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great.” “For in the same way they persecuted the prophets who lived before you.” _____________________________________________________

140. Given the number and variety of factors to be taken into account, when determining the environmental impact of a company’s specific activities, , it is essential to give researchers a permanent role and to facilitate their interaction with broad academic freedom. This ongoing research should make it possible to recognise how the various creatures relate to one another by forming larger units that we today call “ecosystems”. We take this into account not only to determine what constitutes a sensible use of them, but also because they possess an intrinsic value that is independent of that use. Just as every organism is in itself good and marvellous by virtue of being a creature of God, the same applies to the harmonious whole of organisms in a given space that functions as a system. the same applies to the harmonious whole of organisms in a particular area that functions as a system. Even though we may not be aware of it, we ourselves depend on that whole for our existence. It is necessary to remember that ecosystems play a part in the absorption of carbon dioxide, water purification, the control of diseases and pests, soil composition, the decomposition of waste, and in many other services that we forget or ignore. When they realise this, many people become aware once again that we live and act within a reality that has been given to us in advance, which precedes our capabilities and our very existence. That is why, when speaking of “sustainable use”, one must always begin with a reflection on the restorative capacities of every ecosystem in its various sectors and aspects.
