Consideration

Philip’s question, ‘Lord, show us the Father; that is enough for us’, can give the impression of being demanding and overconfident. But at the same time, it expresses a certain confidence in Jesus. In his answer, Jesus ‘reveals’ himself as an image of the Father: In his speaking and acting, the Love of God becomes visible. He also allows his disciples to share in that Love. At the end of the passage, reference is already made to Jesus‘ priestly role: the disciples will still learn to pray in Jesus’ Name, trusting that through his death and resurrection on the cross he has opened the way to the Father.

Brothers and sisters,

In draw your attention to the gospel which I have preached to you,
which ye have received,

otherwise you would have accepted faith without a second thought.
In the first place, then, I have handed down to you
what I myself also received as tradition,
namely, that Christ died for our sins,

and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve.

to more than five hundred brethren at once,

266. Fear and resentment easily lead one to look against punishments in a
vindictive, if not cruel, way rather than looking at them
regard them as part of a process of healing and social reintegration.
Today, ‘both by some sectors of politics and
by some media sometimes incite violence and revenge, publicly and privately,
not only against those responsible for committing
crimes, but also against those on whom a suspicion falls, whether it is
well-founded or unfounded, to have broken the law. […]
There is a tendency to deliberately construct enemies: stereotypical
figures who concentrate in themselves all the characteristics that society sees or interprets as
threatening or interpreted. The mechanisms of this image-making
are the same as those that at the time enabled the spread of racist ideas
made possible’.This has made the practice, which is increasingly common in some countries
increasingly common, to resort to forms of preventive
detention, to imprisonment without trial and especially the death penalty, even
made more dangerous.

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Iedere dag beschikbaar.

Overweging
De Griekse filosofen geloofden dat Gods woord de wereld en de mens leidde, maar ze vonden het belachelijk om te geloven dat het Woord ook mens was geworden in Jezus. Athanasius schrijft over de enorme veranderingen die teweeggebracht werden vanaf het moment dat het Woord van God op aarde kwam. Afgoderij wordt verlaten, mensen bekeren zich tot God en veranderen hun leven radicaal. Christus’ komst op aarde luidde een nieuwe periode in de wereldgeschiedenis in. Dat doet Hij nog steeds, elke keer wanneer Hij vernieuwend handelt in mensenlevens. Wanneer voelen wij ons vernieuwd door Jezus’ aanwezigheid in ons leven ?

EERSTE LEZING              Hand. 5, 34-42
Zij gingen heen, verheugd dat ze waardig bevonden waren
smaad te lijden omwille van de naam van Jezus.

Uit de Handelingen van de Apostelen

In die dagen was er in het Sanhedrin een Farizeeër,
Gamaliël, een wetgeleerde
die bij het gehele volk in aanzien stond.
Hij liet de apostelen een ogenblik naar buiten brengen.
Daarop zei hij :
“Mannen van Israël,
bedenkt wel wat gij met deze mannen gaat doen.
“Voor onze tijd immers trad Teudas op,
die beweerde dat hij iemand van betekenis was
en bij wie zich een groep van ongeveer vierhonderd man aansloot.
“Hij werd gedood
en allen die op hem vertrouwden, werden uiteengejaagd.
“Na hem, in de dagen van de volkstelling
trad Judas de Galileeër op
en sleepte veel volk mee,
en allen die op hem vertrouwden, werden verstrooid.
“Wat ons geval betreft zeg ik u :
bemoeit u niet met deze mensen
maar laat ze hun gang gaan.
“Gaat deze opzet of dit werk van mensen uit,
dan zal het op niets uitlopen.
“Gaat het echter van God uit,
dan zult gij hen niet uiteen kunnen slaan ;
anders zou misschien blijken dat gij tegen God in verzet zijt.”
Zij lieten zich door hem overreden.
Zij riepen de apostelen,
lieten hen geselen,
verboden hun te spreken in de naam van Jezus
en stelden hen in vrijheid.
De apostelen verlieten het Sanhedrin
verheugd dat ze waardig bevonden waren
smaad te lijden omwille van de naam van Jezus.
Zij gingen door
met dagelijks in de tempel en in de huizen onderricht te geven
en de blijde Boodschap te verkondigen
dat Jezus de Messias is.

TUSSENZANG            Ps. 27(26), 1, 4, 13-14

Eén ding slechts vraag ik de Heer,
meer zal ik niet wensen :
dat ik in Gods huis mag wonen zolang als ik leef.

De Heer is mijn licht en mijn leidsman,
wie zou ik vrezen :
de Heer is de schuts van mijn leven,
voor wie zou ik bang zijn ?

Eén ding slechts vraag ik de Heer,
meer zal ik niet wensen :
dat ik in Gods huis mag wonen zolang als ik leef.
Dat ik de beminnelijkheid van de Heer mag ervaren,
zijn tempel weer met eigen ogen mag zien.

Ik reken er op nog tijdens mijn leven
de weldaden van de Heer te ervaren.
Zie uit naar de Heer en houd dapper stand,
wees moedig van hart en vertrouw op de Heer.

Hij liet de broden en de vissen uitdelen onder de mensen
die daar zaten, zoveel men maar wilde.

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Johannes

In die dagen begaf Jezus zich naar de overkant
van het meer van Galilea, bij Tiberias.
Een grote menigte volgde Hem
omdat zij de tekenen zagen die Hij aan de zieken deed.
Jezus ging de berg op
en zette zich daar met zijn leerlingen neer.
Het was kort voor Pasen, het feest van de Joden.
Toen Jezus zijn ogen opsloeg
en zag dat er een grote menigte naar Hem toekwam
vroeg Hij aan Filippus :
“Hoe moeten wij brood kopen om deze mensen te laten eten ?”
– Dit zeide Hij om hem op de proef te stellen,
want zelf wist Hij wel wat Hij ging doen.-
Filippus antwoordde Hem :
“Wil ieder ook maar een klein stukje krijgen
dan is voor tweehonderd denariën brood nog te weinig.”
Een van zijn leerlingen,
Andreas, de broer van Simon Petrus
merkte op :
“Er is hier wel een jongen met vijf gerstebroden en twee vissen,
maar wat betekent dat voor zo’n aantal ?”
Jezus echter zei :
“Laat de mensden gaan zitten.”
Er was daar namelijk veel gras.
Zij gingen dan zitten ;
het aantal mannen bedroeg ongeveer vijfduizend.
Toen nam Jezus de broden
en na het dankgebed gesproken te hebben
liet Hij ze uitdelen onder de mensen die daar zaten,
alsmede de vissen, zoveel men maar wilde.
Toen ze verzadigd waren zei Hij tot zijn leerlingen :
“Haalt nu de overgebleven brokken op
om niets verloren te laten gaan.”
Zij haalden ze op
en vulden van de vijf gerstebroden twaalf manden met brokken,
welke door de mensen na het eten overgelaten waren.
Toen de mensen het teken zagen dat Hij had gedaan zeiden ze :
“Dit is stellig de profeet die in de wereld moet komen.”
Daar Jezus begreep
dat zij zich van Hem meester wilden maken
om Hem mee te voeren en tot koning uit te roepen,
trok Hij zich weer in het gebergte terug,
geheel alleen.

265. Vanaf de eerste eeuwen van de Kerk toonden sommigen zich duidelijk
een tegenstander van de doodstraf. Lactantius betoogde bijvoorbeeld
dat “er geen onderscheid mag worden gemaakt: een mens doden zal altijd
een misdaad zijn”.Paus Nicolaas I spoorde aan: “Zet u ervoor in niet
alleen ieder van de onschuldigen, maar ook alle schuldigen van de doodstraf
te bevrijden”. Ter gelegenheid van het proces tegen enkele moordenaars die
priesters hadden gedood, vroeg de heilige Augustinus de rechter
de moordenaars niet het leven te ontnemen en hij rechtvaardigde dat als
volgt: “Niet dat wij hiermee willen verhinderen dat men misdadige individuen
de vrijheid ontneemt om misdaden te begaan, maar wij verlangen dat
het voor dit doel voldoende is dat door hen in leven te laten en zonder hen
in een deel van hun lichaam te verminken hun door repressieve wetten toe
te passen hun ongezonde onrust wordt ontnomen om weer teruggebracht te
worden tot een gezond en rustig leven, of dat zij, onttrokken aan hun boze
werken, bezig zijn met een of ander nuttig werk. Ook dit is weliswaar een
veroordeling, maar wie zou niet begrijpen dat het meer een weldaad dan
een straf betreft, omdat de brutaliteit van de wreedheid geen vrije ruimte
wordt gelaten, noch het geneesmiddel van het berouw wordt weggenomen?
[…] Wees echter op zo’n manier verontwaardigd over de ongerechtigheid
dat u de menselijkheid niet vergeet; laat de wellust van de wraak niet de
vrije loop tegen de wreedheden van de zondaars, maar richt uw wil op het
genezen van de wonden ervan”.

Consideración

Los filósofos griegos creían que la palabra de Dios guiaba al mundo y a la humanidad, pero les parecía ridículo creer que la Palabra también se había hecho humana en Jesús. Atanasio escribe sobre los enormes cambios que se produjeron desde el momento en que la Palabra de Dios vino a la tierra. La idolatría fue abandonada, la gente se convirtió a Dios y cambió radicalmente sus vidas. La llegada de Cristo a la tierra marcó el comienzo de un nuevo período en la historia del mundo. Él sigue haciéndolo cada vez que actúa para renovar la vida de las personas. ¿Cuándo nos sentimos renovados por la presencia de Jesús en nuestras vidas?

PRIMERA LECTURA              Hechos 5:34-42

Se fueron gozosos por haber sido tenidos por dignos

para sufrir deshonra por causa del nombre de Jesús.

En aquellos días había un fariseo en el Sanedrín,

Gamaliel, un abogado

contentos de haber sido considerados dignos

sufrir el reproche por el bien del nombre de Jesús.

Continuaron

enseñando a diario en el templo y en las casas de la gente

y proclamando la Buena Nueva

de que Jesús es el Mesías.

del mar de Galilea, que también se llama mar de Tiberíades.

Una gran multitud lo seguía

porque veían las señales que hacía a los enfermos.

Jesús subió a la montaña

y se sentó allí con sus discípulos.

Era poco antes de la Pascua, la fiesta judía.

Cuando Jesús miró hacia arriba

y vio que una gran multitud se acercaba a él

le preguntó a Felipe

«¿Cómo vamos a comprar pan para que esta gente coma?».

—Dijo esto para ponerlo a prueba,

pues él mismo sabía lo que iba a hacer.

Felipe le respondió:

«Si cada uno tiene solo un pedazo,

el valor de doscientos denarios de pan no será suficiente».

Uno de sus discípulos,

Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro,

observó:

«Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos peces,

pero ¿de qué sirven para tanta gente?».

Jesús, sin embargo, dijo:

«Que se sienten».

Porque allí había mucha hierba.

Así que se sentaron;

había unos cinco mil hombres.

Entonces Jesús tomó los panes

y, después de dar gracias, los distribuyó

Hizo que los distribuyeran entre la gente que estaba sentada allí,

así como los peces, tantos como quisiera cada uno.

Cuando estuvieron llenos, dijo a sus discípulos:

«Ahora recojan los fragmentos sobrantes

para que no se desperdicie nada».

Los recogieron

y llenaron doce cestas con fragmentos de los cinco panes de cebada

que la gente había dejado después de la comida.

Cuando la gente vio la señal que había hecho, dijeron:

«Este es sin duda el profeta que ha de venir al mundo».

Como Jesús comprendió

que querían hacerle su maestro

para llevárselo y proclamarlo rey,

se retiró de nuevo a las montañas,

solo.

265. Desde los primeros siglos de la Iglesia, algunos se opusieron claramente

a la pena de muerte. Lactancio, por ejemplo, argumentó

que «no debería haber ninguna excepción: que quitar la vida humana es siempre

siempre será un crimen». El papa Nicolás I instó: «Hagan todo lo posible para

no solo liberar a todas las personas inocentes, sino también a todas las personas

culpables de la pena de muerte  ». Con motivo del juicio de varios asesinos que habían

matado a sacerdotes, san Agustín pidió al juez

que no quitara la vida a los asesinos y lo justificó de la siguiente

: «No es que queramos evitar que los delincuentes

sean privados de su libertad para cometer delitos, sino que deseamos

que, para este fin, sea suficiente con dejarles vivos y sin

mutilar ninguna parte de su cuerpo, aplicarles leyes represivas

para privarles de su agitación malsana y hacer que

una vida sana y pacífica, o que, alejados de sus malas

obras, se dediquen a algún trabajo útil. Esto también es una

condena, pero ¿quién no entendería que es más un beneficio que

un castigo, porque no se da rienda suelta a la brutalidad de la crueldad

ni se quita el remedio del arrepentimiento?

[…] Sin embargo, indignaos tanto por la injusticia

que no olvidéis la humanidad; no deis rienda suelta al deseo de venganza

contra las crueldades de los pecadores, sino que centrad vuestra voluntad en

sanar sus heridas.

Consideration

The Greek philosophers believed that God’s Word guided the world and man, but they found it ridiculous to believe that the Word had also become man in Jesus. Athanasius writes of the tremendous changes brought about from the moment the Word of God came to earth. Idolatry was abandoned, people converted to God and radically changed their lives. Christ’s coming to earth ushered in a new period in world history. He still does, every time He acts renewingly in people’s lives. When do we feel renewed by Jesus’ presence in our lives ?

FIRST READING                    Acts 5:34-42

They went away rejoicing that they had been found worthy
to suffer reproach for the sake of the name of Jesus.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days there was a Pharisee in the Sanhedrin,

Gamaliel, a scholar of the law

who was held in esteem by all the people.

He had the apostles brought out for a moment.

Thereupon he said :

‘Men of Israel ,

consider what you are going to do with these men.

‘For before our time Teudas was acting,

who claimed to be someone of consequence

and with whom a group of about four hundred men joined.

‘He was killed

and all who trusted him were dispersed.

‘After him, in the days of the census

Judas the Galilean appeared

and dragged many people with him,

and all who trusted in him were scattered.

‘As for our case, I say to you :

do not interfere with these people

but let them have their way.

‘Does this scheme or this work proceed from men ,

They allowed themselves to be persuaded by him.

They called the apostles,

forbade them to speak in the name of Jesus

The apostles left the Sanhedrin

delighted that they had been found worthy

to suffer defamation for the sake of the name of Jesus.

They continued

teaching daily in the temple and in the houses

and proclaiming the Good News

that Jesus is the Messiah.

In those days Jesus went across

of the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberias.

A great crowd followed Him

because they saw the signs He was doing to the sick.

Jesus went up the mountain

and sat down there with his disciples.

It was shortly before Easter, the feast of the Jews.

When Jesus lifted up his eyes

and saw that a large crowd was coming towards Him

He asked Philip :

‘How should we buy bread for these people to eat?’

– This He said to test Him,

for He Himself knew what He was going to do.-

Philip answered Him :

‘Will every one get even a small piece

then for two hundred denarii of bread is still too little.’

One of His disciples,

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter

remarked :

‘There is a boy here with five barley loaves and two fish ,

but what does that mean for such a number ?’

Jesus, however, said :

‘Let the people sit down.’

For there was much grass there.

They then sat down ;

the number of men was about five thousand.

Then Jesus took the loaves

and after speaking the prayer of thanksgiving

He had them distributed among the people sitting there,

as well as the fish, as many as they wanted.

When they were satiated, He said to His disciples :

‘Now collect the remaining chunks

so that nothing is lost.’

They collected them

and filled twelve baskets of the five barley loaves with lumps,

which had been left by the people after eating.

When the people saw the sign He had done they said :

‘This is surely the prophet who must come into the world.’

Since Jesus understood

that they wanted to take possession of Him

to take Him away and proclaim Him king,

He withdrew again into the mountains,

all alone.

that ‘no distinction should be made: killing a human being will always

be a crime’. Pope Nicholas I urged: ‘Commit yourself not

only each of the innocent, but also all the guilty from the death penalty

free’. On the occasion of the trial of some murderers who had

had killed priests, St Augustine asked the judge

not to deprive the murderers of their lives, and he justified it as

as follows: ‘Not that by this we wish to prevent criminal individuals from being

the freedom to commit crimes, but we desire that

it is sufficient for this purpose that by leaving them alive and without

mutilating in any part of their bodies their by applying repressive laws

Overweging
De reden waarom Jozef als heilige gevierd wordt, lezen we in Mat 1, 18-24: wanneer Jozef overweegt om in stilte te scheiden van Maria, verschijnt een engel hem in zijn droom, en geeft hij Jozef de opdracht om bij Maria te blijven. Hij zal het kind dat zij het leven zal schenken een naam moeten geven. Het gaat bij Jozef dus niet over een plaats die hij toevallig in het leven van Jezus inneemt, maar om een plaats die hij bekleedt in de heilsgeschiedenis. Het is Jozef die geroepen wordt om het kind te behoeden, om het in veiligheid te brengen wanneer het bedreigd wordt, om te voorzien in zijn levensonderhoud. Daarom wordt hij aanroepen als beschermer van de heilige familie der gelovigen: de heilige Jozef kan ons helpen om het geheim van het kindschap van God in en rond ons te erkennen.

EERSTE LEZING            Hand. 5, 27-33
Van dit alles zijn wij getuigen, maar ook de heilige Geest.

Uit de Handelingen van de Apostelen

In die dagen namen de dienaren van de bevelhebber
de apostelen mee en brachten hen voor het Sanhedrin.
De hogepriester begon hen te ondervragen :

in die Naam onderricht te geven ?
“Door uw toedoen is heel Jeruzalem vol van uw leer.

Leemos la razón por la que José es celebrado como santo en Mateo 1:18-24: cuando José estaba considerando divorciarse de María en secreto, un ángel se le apareció en sueños y le ordenó que se quedara con María. Tendrá que poner nombre al niño que ella dará a luz. Así que para José no se trata de un lugar que ocupe en la vida de Jesús, sino de un lugar que ocupa en la historia de la salvación. Es José quien está llamado a proteger al niño, a ponerlo a salvo cuando esté amenazado, a proveerle de sustento. Por eso se le llama el protector de la santa familia de los creyentes: San José puede ayudarnos a reconocer el misterio de la divinidad de Dios en nosotros y a nuestro alrededor.

Sobre la fraternidad y la amistad social

264. En el Nuevo Testamento, mientras se pide a los individuos

juzgar a los demás (cf. Rom 12:17, 19), es necesario

reconocer que las autoridades imponen penas a los malhechores

(cf. Rom 13:4; 1 Pe 2:14). De hecho, «la vida en común,

estructurada en torno a comunidades organizadas, necesita

normas para la convivencia, cuya violación deliberada requiere una

respuesta adecuada». Esto implica que la legítima

autoridad gubernamental «puede y debe imponer castigos proporcionales a

la gravedad de los delitos» y que garantiza al poder judicial «la

independencia conforme a la ley».

Consideration

We read the reason why Joseph is celebrated as a saint in Mat 1:18-24: when Joseph contemplates separating silently from Mary, an angel appears to him in his dream, and instructs Joseph to stay with Mary. He will have to name the child she will give birth to. So Joseph is not about a place he happens to occupy in Jesus’ life, but a place he occupies in salvation history. It is Joseph who is called to guard the child, to bring him to safety when threatened, to provide for his livelihood. That is why he is invoked as protector of the holy family of believers: St Joseph can help us to recognise the secret of the childhood of God in and around us.

FIRST READING             Acts 5:27-33

To all this we are witnesses, but also the Holy Spirit.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days the servants of the commander
took the apostles and brought them before the Sanhedrin.
The high priest began to question them :
‘Did we not expressly forbid you

On brotherhood and social friendship

264. In the New Testament, while individuals are asked

not to play the role of their own judge (cf. Rom. 12:17,19), the need

that authorities impose punishment on those who do evil,

(cf. Rom. 13, 4; 1 Pet. 2, 14). After all, ‘communal life ,

structured around organised communities, needs

rules for living together, a deliberate violation of which calls for an

adequate response’. This entails that legitimate

public authority ‘can and should impose punishments proportionate to

the seriousness of the crimes’ and that it guarantees the judiciary ’the necessary

independence under the law’.

Overweging

Een wereld die van God vervreemd is, kan de kloof nooit vanuit zichzelf dichten: het initiatief komt van God. Het is in Jezus dat God tot het uiterste gegaan is om de mens te redden. Dat geeft de mens een zekere verantwoordelijkheid, die hij in vrijheid kan opnemen of weigeren: hij is voor of hij is tegen Jezus, hij gelooft of hij gelooft niet. Hij kan keuzes maken, ten goede of ten kwade. En zelfs wie Jezus niet kent en goed doet, leeft in zekere zin in God.

EERSTE LEZING                 Hand. 5, 17-26

De mannen die gij in de kerker hebt gezet bevinden zich in de tempel en onderrichten het volk.

Uit de Handelingen van de Apostelen

In die dagen werden de hogepriester en heel zijn aanhang,
die de partij der Sadduceeën vormden
met hevige afgunst vervuld.
Zij grepen de apostelen en zetten hen in de stadsgevangenis.
Maar in de nacht
ontsloot een engel des Heren de deuren van de gevangenis,
leidde hen naar buiten en zei :
“Gaat,
treedt weer op in de tempel
en predikt aan het volk al deze woorden des Levens.”
Zij gaven hieraan gehoor,

Toen zij dit vernamen
vroegen de tempelcommandant en de hogepriesters,

zich af wat voor gevolgen dit zou kunnen hebben.
Maar iemand kwam hun melden :
“De mannen die gij in de kerker hebt gezet,
bevinden zich in de tempel en onderrichten het volk.”
Daarop ging de bevelhebber met zijn dienaren hen halen

uit angst door het volk gestenigd te worden.

Consideración

Todo lo que le sucedió a Jesús, desde su vida en la tierra hasta la cruz y su gloria con Dios, tiene una sola causa: el amor incomprensible, inconmensurable e ilimitado de Dios. Un mundo alejado de Dios nunca podrá salvar el abismo por sí solo: la iniciativa viene de Dios. Es en Jesús donde Dios ha ido al límite para salvar a la humanidad. Esto le da al hombre una cierta responsabilidad, que puede aceptar o rechazar en libertad: o está a favor o en contra de Jesús, cree o no cree. Puede tomar decisiones, para bien o para mal. La pena de muerte

263. Hay otra forma de eliminar a la otra persona, no destinada
a los países, sino a los individuos. Esa es la pena de muerte. San Juan
Pablo II declaró clara y firmemente que es moralmente inadecuada
y en el campo del derecho penal ya no es necesaria.
Es inconcebible dar marcha atrás en esta posición. Ahora confirmamos claramente

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration

For everything that happened to Jesus, during his life across the cross to glory with God, there is only one single ground: God’s incomprehensible, immeasurable, measureless love. A world alienated from God can never close the gap from within itself: the initiative comes from God. It is in Jesus that God went to extremes to save man. That gives man a certain responsibility, which he can freely take up or refuse: he is for or he is against Jesus, he believes or he does not believe. He can make choices, for better or for worse. And even those who do not know Jesus and do good are, in a sense, living in God.

FIRST READING                     Acts 5:17-26

The men you put in the dungeon are in the temple teaching the people.

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days the high priest and all his entourage,
who formed the party of the Sadducees
were filled with fierce envy.
They seized the apostles and put them in the city prison.
But in the night
an angel of the Lord unlocked the doors of the prison,
led them out and said :
‘Go,
reappear in the temple
and preach to the people all these words of Life.’
They complied,
went to the temple towards morning
and gave instruction there.
Now when the high priest came with his men
they called together the Sanhedrin,
the council of the elders of the people of Israel
and sent servants to the prison to fetch them.
But on arrival, the servants found them no longer in the dungeon.
They returned with the message :
‘We found the prison firmly locked
and the guards in front of the doors at their posts,
but when we opened we found no one there.’
When they learnt this
asked the temple commander and the high priests,
– worried about it –
wondered what consequences this might have.
But someone came to report to them :
‘The men whom thou hast put in the dungeon,
are in the temple teaching the people.’
Thereupon the commander went with his servants to fetch them
– but without using force,
for fear of being stoned by the people.

Who cry out in distress, to them the Lord listens.
Or : Alleluia.

The Lord I will praise every day,
His praise is always on my lips.
My spirit is proud of the Lord’s favour,
let every one who hears it rejoice.
Glorify the Lord together with me
And let us worship His Name in unison.
I went to the Lord and He heard me,
He saved me from all that I feared.
Indulge in Him, then you will become happy,
for He will not fail you.
Those crying out in distress, to them the Lord listens
And rescues them from their misery.
The angel of God puts a bulwark around them,
to protect every one who fears God.
Observe and notice how gracious the Lord is,
happy is he who seeks salvation with Him.

God sent his Son into the world that the world might be saved through him.

At that time, Jesus said to Nicodemus :
‘So much did God love the world
That He gave His only begotten Son,
hat whoever believes in him shall not perish
but shall have eternal life.
‘God did not send his Son
not sent into the world to judge the world ,
but that the world might be saved through Him.
‘Whoever believes in Him will not be judged,
but he who does not believe has already been judged,
because he has not believed
in the Name of the only-begotten Son of God.
‘Herein consists judgment :
The light has come into the world ,
but men loved darkness more than light,
because their deeds were evil.
‘Every one who acts wickedly has an abhorrence of the light
and does not go towards the light
for fear that his works will be made public.
‘But he who does the truth goes to the light ,
that his deeds may be shown to have been done in God.’

The death penalty

263. There is another way to eliminate the other, not intended
for countries, but for persons. That is the death penalty.
Saint John Paul II has stated clearly and firmly that it is inadequate on a moral level
and no longer necessary in the field of criminal law.
It is not conceivable to go back on this position. We now affirm
clearly that ‘the death penalty is inadmissible’ and the Church is firmly committed to
to propose its abolition throughout the world’.
