Recital
The daily reading does not take up much from the Jacob cycle. But we do get the best stories: yesterday the vision in Bethel and today the battle with the angel. The text says: “You have fought with God and with men”. In fact, this symbolises what happens in many people’s lives. There comes a moment where everything is at stake, where a life decision has to be made. Jacob is scarred for life by this fight with the angel. He is never the same again. He has become a different person. That is why he is also given a new name.
FIRST READING Gen 32:23-33
Henceforth you shall be called Israel, for you have fought with God.
From the Book of Genesis
In those days Jacob rose up
and with his two wives, his two slave girls
and his eleven children crossed the wid of the Jabbok.
When Jacob had brought them across the river with his possessions,
he remained alone.
And a man wrestled with him ,
until the break of dawn.
When the man became aware that he could not cope with Jacob,
during the wrestling he hit him on the hip at the top,
so that it was dislocated.
Thereupon the man said :
“Let me go, for the dawn has come.”
But Jacob replied :
“I will not let you go, if you do not bless me.”
The man asked :
“What is thy name ?”
He replied : “Jacob.”
Then the man said :
“Henceforth thou shalt no longer be called Jacob, but Israel ,
for thou hast fought with God and with men
and thou hast overcome them.”
Now Jacob asked :
“Make known to me thy name.”
But the man said :
“Why dost thou ask for my name?”
Then he gave him his blessing on the spot.
Jacob called that place Peniel, because – so he said –
“I have seen God face to face ,
and yet I have remained alive.”
The sun rose as soon as he passed Peniel.
Since then, he had been limping at the hip.
Hence, to this day, the Israelites wear
do not eat the muscle that is at the top of the hip,
because God put Jacob on top against the hip,
had bumped against the muscle of the hip joint.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 17(16), 1, 2-3, 6-7, 8 b, 15
I am righteous and may behold You, Lord.
Listen, Lord, for my cause is righteous,
heed my loud cry.
Will hear my prayer ;
my lips do not deceive Thee.
My judgment I expect from You,
your eyes see what is mine.
See into my heart, go after me in the night,
or test me with fire :
Thou findst no iniquity in me.
Now I call upon Thee, for Thou wilt hear me,
so turn your ear to me, hear my voice.
Show me the greatness of Thy mercy,
saviour of all who flee into thy hand.
Hide me under the shelter of thy wings ;
i am righteous and may behold You,
your sight sates me when I awaken.
ALLELUIA I Petr. 1, 25
Alleluia.
The word of the Lord remains for ever ;
and this word is the message
proclaimed to you in the gospel.
Alleluia.
Gospel Mt 9:32-38
The harvest may be great but workers are few.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
In those days they brought Jesus a mute
who was possessed by the devil.
As soon as the devil was cast out, the mute began to speak.
The people said in amazement :
“Never before had such a thing been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said :
“The prince of devils enables Him to
to cast out the devils.”
Jesus went around all the towns and villages
where He taught in their synagogues
and proclaimed the Good News of the Kingdom
and healed all diseases and ailments.
At the sight of those crowds of people
he was moved by compassion,
because they were lying waste
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then He spoke to His disciples :
“The harvest may be great
but labourers are few.
“Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest
send labourers to reap.”

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On caring for the common home
45. In some places in urban and rural areas, the privatisation
of estates has made citizens’ access to areas of
special beauty difficult; elsewhere, they have made “ecological”
residential neighbourhoods that are available only to the few
and where care is taken to prevent others from entering
to disturb an artificial tranquillity. One often finds a beautiful city, full of
well-groomed green spaces in a few “safe” areas, but it is
not so in less visible zones, where society’s outcasts live.
