Consideración

Tomás era un hombre honesto y perspicaz. Conocía la alegría de reconocer al Señor, por lo que en ese momento duda en admitir su error. Su respuesta al encuentro con Cristo resucitado es una confesión de fe: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío! Podemos hacer nuestras estas palabras. Incluso en circunstancias difíciles, esta sencilla oración nos dará fuerzas para seguir creyendo en Aquel a quien hemos reconocido.

PRIMERA LECTURA            Ef 2,19-22

Edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles.

De la carta del santo apóstol Pablo a los Efesios
Hermanos y hermanas,

Ya no sois extranjeros ni desplazados
sino conciudadanos de los santos y miembros de la casa de Dios,
edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles y profetas,
mientras que la piedra angular es Cristo Jesús mismo,
que sostiene todo el edificio en su lugar.
En Él crece hasta convertirse en un templo santo en el Señor.

Del santo evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo según
Juan

Tomás, uno de los doce, llamado también Dídimo
no estaba con los discípulos cuando vino Jesús.
Los otros le dijeron :
“Wii han visto al Señor”
Pero él respondió:
“No veo en sus manos la marca de los clavos..,
…y puedo poner mi dedo en el lugar de los clavos..,
y poner mi mano en su costado,
…no lo creeré”
Ocho días después, sus discípulos estaban de nuevo en la casa..,
…y ahora Tomás estaba allí.
Aunque las puertas estaban cerradas, Jesús entró,
…se paró en medio de ellos y dijo..
“Paz a vosotros”
Entonces dijo a Tomás
,,Llega aquí con tu dedo y contempla miin manos.
extiende tu mano y ponla en mi costado
y ya no seas incrédulo sino creyente”
Entonces Tomás exclamó:
“¡Señor mío y Dios mío!”
Entonces Jesús le dijo :
“¿Porque me has visto crees?
“Dichosos los que no han visto y sin embargo han creído.”

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

40. Los océanos no sólo contienen la mayor parte del agua del
planeta, sino también la mayor parte de la gran variedad de
criaturas vivas, muchas de las cuales aún nos son desconocidas y están amenazadas por diversas
causas. Por otra parte, la vida en ríos
lagos, mares y océanos, que alimentan a gran parte de la población mundial
se alimenta, está amenazada por la extracción incontrolada de la
poblaciones de peces, provocando una drástica reducción de algunas especies.
La población sigue desarrollando
métodos de pesca en los que gran parte de las especies capturadas.
En particular, están amenazados organismos marinos
que no tenemos en cuenta, como ciertas especies de plancton que
son un eslabón muy importante de la cadena alimentaria marina y
de las que dependen en última instancia las especies utilizadas para la
humanos.

Consideration

Thomas was an honest and discerning man. He knew the joy of recognising the Lord.He therefore hesitates at that moment to admit his wrong. His response to meeting the risen Christ is a confession of faith: ‘My Lord and my God!’ We may make these words our own. Even in difficult circumstances, through this simple prayer, we will find strength to continue to believe in Him whom we have recognised.

FIRST READING     Eph. 2:19-22

Built on the foundation of the apostles.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Ephesians
Brothers and sisters,

You are no longer strangers and displaced persons
but fellow citizens of the saints and household members of God,
built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
while the capstone is Christ Jesus Himself,
who holds the whole edifice in place.
In Him it grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
In Him you too will be built up
into a dwelling place of God,

Thomas, one of the twelve, also called Didymus
was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
The others told him :
“Wii have seen the Lord.”
But hii replied :
“À1s I do not see in his hands the mark of the nails ,
and can put miin finger in the place of the nails,
and put miin hand in his side,
i will not believe it.”
Àight days later, his disciples were biieen in the house again,
and now Thomas was there.
Although the doors were closed, Jesus entered,
stood in their midst and said”
“Peace be unto you.”
Then Hii said to Thomas :
,,Korm here with your finger and contemplate miin hands.

On caring for the common home

40. The oceans contain not only most of the water of the
planet, but also most of the wide variety of living
creatures, many of which are still unknown to us and are threatened by various
causes. On the other hand, life in rivers,
lakes, seas and oceans, which feed a large proportion of the world’s population,
is threatened by uncontrolled extraction of the
fish stock, causing a drastic reduction in some species.
People are still continuing to develop selective
methods of fishing in which a large proportion of the captured
species is discarded. In particular, marine organisms are threatened
that we do not take into account, such as certain species of plankton that
are a very important link in the marine food chain and
on which ultimately depend the species used for human
food.

het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De grote figuren van het Oude Testament, David en Salomon, Mozes en de patriarchen, worden niet zomaar geïdealiseerd. Het zijn mensen met gebreken, en die gebreken worden vrijmoedig in het licht gesteld. Zo ook vandaag Abraham. Al is hij de vader van alle gelovigen, toch is zijn  houding tegenover Hagar en Ismaël weinig moedig – ook al wordt ze wat goedgepraat. In feite beantwoordt die houding aan de juridische praktijk van die tijd.

EERSTE LEZING           Gen. 21, 5. 8-20

De zoon van de slavin
mag geen medeërfgenaam worden van mijn zoon Isaäk.

Uit het Boek Genesis

Abraham was honderd jaar, toen zijn zoon Isaäk geboren werd.
Het kind groeide op en werd van de borst genomen.
Op de dag dat Isaäk van de borst genomen werd,
gaf Abraham een groot feest.
Maar toen Sara de zoon die Hagar, de Egyptische,
aan Abraham geschonken had, eens zag lachen,
zei ze tot Abraham :
“Jaag die slavin met haar zoon weg,
want de zoon van die slavin
mag geen medeërfgenaam worden van mijn zoon Isaäk.”
Abraham vond deze eis zeer ongepast,
omdat het toch om een zoon van hem ging.
God echter zei hem :
,,Wat Sara ten aanzien van de jongen en uw slavin eist,
moet gij niet als ongepast beschouwen.
“Luister naar alles wat zij u zegt :
Want alleen door Isaäk krijgt gij een nageslacht
dat uw naam draagt.
“Maar ook de zoon van de slavin
zal Ik tot een volk maken,
omdat ook hij een kind van u is.”
Abraham voorzag Hagar de volgende morgen van brood
en een zak water, zette het kind op haar schouder
en zond hen weg.
Maar onderweg verdwaalde zij in de woestijn van Berseba.
Toen de waterzak leeg was,
legde zij het kind onder een struik
en ging op een boogschot afstand zitten,
want zij dacht : Ik kan mijn kind niet zien sterven.
Ze bleef daar zitten en schreide luid.
God hoorde het schreien van de jongen
en de engel van God riep uit de hemel tot Hagar :
“Wat is er, Hagar, Wees niet bang,
want God heeft in zijn verblijf
het schreien van uw kind gehoord.
“Sta op, neem de jongen en houd hem goed vast,
want Ik zal een groot volk van hem maken.”
Toen opende God haar ogen,
zodat zij een waterput zag;
zij vulde de zak weer met water
en gaf de jongen te drinken.
En God beschermde de jongen.
Toen hij groot geworden was, leefde hij in de woestijn
en werd een ervaren boogschutter.

Die roepen in nood, naar hen luistert de Heer.

en redt hen uit hun ellende.
De engel van God legt een schans om hen heen,

Wat hebt Gij met ons te maken, Zoon van God ?
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Matteiis

Toen Jezus aan de overkant van het meer gekomen was
in het land der Gadarenen,
liepen Hem twee bezetenen tegemoet.
Ze kwamen uit de grafspelonken te voorschijn
en waren zeer gevaarlijk, zodat niemand daarlangs kon gaan.
Plotseling begonnen ze te schreeuwen :
“Wat hebt Gij met ons te maken, Zoon van God ?
“Zijt Gij hier gekomen om ons vóór de tijd te kwellen ?’
Een eind van hen vandaan
was men een grote kudde zwijnen aan het hoeden.
De duivels nu smeekten Hem :
,,Als Gij ons uitdrijft, stuur ons dan in die kudde zwijnen *
Hij zei hun : ,,Gaat heen.”
En zij verlieten hen.
Nauwelijks hadden zij bezit genomen van de zwijnen,
of de hele kudde stortte zich van de steile oever in het meer
en kwam in het water om.
De zwijnenhoeders namen de vlucht,
en in de stad gekomen vertelden zij alles,
ook wat er met de bezetenen gebeurd was.
Daarop liep de hele stad uit, Jezus tegemoet;
en toen zij Hem zagen
verzochten zij Hem hun streek te verlaten.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis

39. Ook de vervanging van de wilde flora door gebieden met bosaanplant,
die meestal monoculturen zijn, is gewoonlijk geen onderwerp van
een adequate analyse. In werkelijkheid kan deze vervanging een
biodiversiteit, die door de nieuwe soorten die geplant worden niet wordt
geaccepteerd, ernstig treffen. Ook de waterrijke gebieden die in landbouwgebied
worden veranderd, verliezen een geweldige biodiversiteit die zij
huisvestten. In sommige kustgebieden is het verdwijnen van de door
mangroves gevormde ecosystemen zorgwekkend.

Consideración
Las grandes figuras del Antiguo Testamento, David y Salomón, Moisés y los patriarcas, no son simplemente idealizados. Son personas con defectos, y esos defectos se ponen de relieve con valentía. Lo mismo ocurre hoy con Abraham. A pesar de ser el padre de todos los creyentes, su actitud hacia Agar e Ismael es displicente, aunque en cierto modo se le perdone. De hecho, esa actitud corresponde a la práctica legal de la época.

PRIMERA LECTURA        Gén. 21, 5. 8-20

El hijo de la esclava
no podrá ser coheredero con mi hijo Isaac.

Del libro del Génesis

Abraham tenía cien años cuando nació su hijo Isaac.
El niño creció y fue tomado del pecho.
El día en que Isaac fue tomado del pecho
Abraham dio un gran banquete.
Pero cuando Sara le dio el hijo que Agar, la egipcia,
había dado a Abraham, una vez sonrió,
le dijo a Abraham :
“Ahuyenta a esa esclava con su hijo ,
pues el hijo de esa esclava
no debe ser coheredero con mi hijo Isaac”
Abraham encontró esta demanda muy inapropiada,
porque después de todo, este era un hijo suyo.
Dios, sin embargo, le dijo :
“Lo que Sara exige con respecto al niño y a tu esclava ,
no debes considerarlo impropio.
“Escucha todo lo que te diga:
Porque sólo a través de Isaac tendrás descendencia
que llevará tu nombre.
“Pero también del hijo de la esclava
haré un pueblo ,

A cierta distancia de ellos

El les dijo : “Marchaos”

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

39. Además, la sustitución de la flora silvestre por zonas de plantaciones forestales
que en su mayoría son monocultivos, no suele ser objeto de
un análisis adecuado. En realidad, esta sustitución puede aumentar una
biodiversidad, que no sea aceptada por las nuevas especies plantadas,
afectarla gravemente. Del mismo modo, los humedales que
se modifican, pierden una enorme biodiversidad que
albergaban. En algunas zonas costeras, la desaparición de
ecosistemas formados por manglares es preocupante.

Consideration
The great figures of the Old Testament, David and Solomon, Moses and the patriarchs, are not simply idealised. They are people with flaws, and those flaws are boldly highlighted. So is Abraham today. Even though he is the father of all believers, his attitude towards Hagar and Ishmael is lackadaisical – even if it is somewhat condoned. In fact, that attitude corresponds to the legal practice of the time.

FIRST READING    Gen. 21, 5. 8-20

The son of the slave woman
may not become joint heir with my son Isaac.

From the Book of Genesis

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born.
The child grew up and was taken from the breast.
On the day that Isaac was taken from the breast,
abraham gave a great feast.
But when Sarah gave the son that Hagar, the Egyptian,
had given to Abraham, once smiled,
she said to Abraham :
“Chase away that slave woman with her son ,
for the son of that slave woman
must not become a joint heir with my son Isaac.”
Abraham found this demand highly inappropriate,
because after all, this was a son of his.
God, however, told him :
“What Sarah demands regarding the boy and your slave girl ,
thou must not regard as improper.
“Listen to everything she says to you :
For only through Isaac wilt thou have an offspring
that shall bear thy name.
“But also the son of the slave woman
i will make a people ,
because he too is a child of thine.”
Abraham provided Hagar with bread the next morning
and a bag of water, put the child on her shoulder
and sent them away.
But on the way, they got lost in the desert of Berseba.
When the bag of water was empty ,
she put the child under a bush
and sat down a bowshot away,
for she thought : I cannot watch my child die.
She stayed there and cried loudly.
God heard the boy’s cry
and the angel of God called out from heaven to Hagar :
“What is it, Hagar, do not be afraid ,
for God in his abode
heard the weeping of thy child.
“Arise, take the boy and hold him well,
for I will make of him a great nation.”
Then God opened her eyes,
so that she saw a well of water;
she filled the bag with water again
and gave the boy to drink.
And God protected the boy.
When he grew up, he lived in the desert
and became an experienced archer.

Some distance away from them
one was herding a large herd of boars.
The devils now begged Him :
”If Thou dost cast us out, send us into that herd of swine *”
He said to them : “Go away.”
And they left them.
Hardly had they taken possession of the swine,
or the whole herd plunged from the steep bank into the lake
and perished in the water.
The boar herders took flight,
and coming into the city they told everything,
including what had happened to the possessed.
Thereupon the whole city ran out to meet Jesus;
and when they saw Him
they begged Him to leave their region.

39. Also, the replacement of wild flora with areas of forest plantations
which are mostly monocultures, is not usually the subject of
adequate analysis. In reality, this replacement may increase a
biodiversity, which is not accepted by the new species being planted
accepted, seriously affect it. Similarly, wetlands that are turned into agricultural

De boot is onze levensboot die vaak wel eens in de storm terecht komt. Paus Benedictus XVI zag in de boot en de storm de situatie van de Kerk vandaag. De pointe van dit verhaal is misschien wel dat Jezus midden de storm onwankelbaar blijft en wij bij alle storm en wind altijd op Hem kunnen en mogen vertrouwen. Hij vaart met ons mee. Hij kan de storm bedaren.

EERSTE LEZING           Gen. 19, 15-29

God de Heer liet uit de hemel zwavel en vuur
over Sodom en Gomorra neerregenen.

In die dagen,
zetten de engelen Lot tot spoed aan en zeiden:
“Vooruit, neem uw vrouw en uw beide dochters mee;
anders wordt gij het slachtoffer van de bestraffing van de stad.
Toen Lot nog aarzelde, grepen de mannen hemzelf,
zijn vrouw en zijn beide dochters bij de hand,
want de HEER wilde hen sparen,
en zij brachten hen buiten de stad.
En toen zij hen de stad uit gebracht hadden,
zei één van hen:
“Breng uzelf in veiligheid,
want uw leven staat op het spel;
kijk niet om, blijf nergens in de buurt staan,
maar vlucht de bergen in, anders komt gij om.”
Maar Lot zei tot hen:
“Dat niet, HEER!
Zeker, Gij zijt zeer goed voor uw dienaar geweest
en hebt mij een grote weldaad bewezen
door mij in leven te laten,
maar ik kan onmogelijk naar de bergen vluchten.
Daar zou het onheil mij achterhalen
en zou ik toch de dood vinden.
Kijk, daar ligt een stad niet ver van hier;
daar wil ik wel heen vluchten;
het is een kleine stad.
Laat mij daarheen de wijk nemen;
zij is toch maar klein.
En dan zal ik het er levend afbrengen.”
God sprak tot hem:
“Ook hierin zal Ik u terwille zijn;
de stad die gij bedoelt zal Ik niet verwoesten.
“Vlucht er nu haastig heen, wat Ik kan niets doen,
zolang gij daar niet aangekomen zijt.”
Zo komt het dat die stad Soar heet.

Zodra de zon was opgegaan en Lot in Soar was aangekomen,
liet God de HEER uit de hemel zwavel en vuur
over Sodom en Gomorra neerregenen.
Hij verwoestte die steden en de hele streek,
met alle bewoners en al wat er groeide.
De vrouw van Lot, die achter hem liep,
keek om en veranderde in een zoutklomp.
Vroeg in de ochtend begaf Abraham zich naar de plaats
waar hij met de HEER gestaan had.
Hij keek omlaag naar Sodom en Gomorra
en heel de Jordaanstreek,
en zag een walm van de aarde opstijgen,
als de rook van een smeltoven.
Zo hield God bij de verwoesting van de steden van die landstreek
rekening met Abrahams wens en liet Hij Lot ontkomen,
toen Hij de steden verwoestte waar deze gewoond had.

TUSSENZANG           Ps. 26,(25) 2-3, 9-10, 11-12

Steeds heb ik uw liefde voor ogen, Heer.

Doorzoek mij maar, Heer, en beproef mij,
ga na wat er leeft in mijn hart.
Steeds heb ik uw liefde voor ogen
en richt mijn gedrag naar uw woord.

Verdelg mij dan niet met de zondaars,
zoals Gij met moordenaars doet ;
wier handen bevlekt zijn door onrecht,
bezoedeld door omkoperij.

Maar ik ga mijn weg zonder schuld,
verlos mij en wees mij genadig.

zodat de golven over de boot sloegen;
Hij echter lag te slapen.
Zij gingen naar Hem toe
en maakten Hem wakker met de woorden:
“Heer, red ons, wij vergaan!”
Hij sprak tot hen:
“Waarom zijt gij bang, kleingelovigen?”
Dan stond Hij op,
richtte zich met een dwingend woord tot de winden en de zee,
en het water werd volmaakt stil.
De mensen stonden verbaasd en zeiden:
“Wat voor iemand is dat toch,
dat zelfs de winden en de zee Hem gehoorzamen?”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

38. Wij herinneren bijvoorbeeld aan de longen van de planeet die
boordevol biodiversiteit zitten, zoals het Amazonegebied en het rivierbekken
van de Kongo of de grote waterhoudende aardlagen en de gletsjers. Het
belang van deze plaatsen voor het geheel van de planeet en de toekomst
van de mensheid is maar al te bekend. De ecosystemen van de tropische
wouden hebben een biodiversiteit met een grote complexiteit, die men
onmogelijk geheel kan kennen, maar wanneer deze wouden in brand
worden gestoken of met de grond gelijk worden gemaakt om het verbouwen
van producten te doen toenemen, dan gaan er binnen weinig jaren
ontelbare soorten verloren of veranderen deze gebieden in dorre woestijnen.
Een teer evenwicht dringt zich echter op, wanneer men het heeft over
deze plaatsen, omdat men ook niet de geweldige internationale economische
belangen kan negeren die, met het voorwendsel dat men ervoor zorgt,
de nationale soevereiniteit in gevaar kunnen brengen. Er bestaan inderdaad
“voorstellen tot internationalisering van het Amazonegebied, die
alleen maar de economische belangen van de multinationals dienen”.
Prijzenswaardig is de inzet van internationale organisaties en nongouvermentele
organisaties (NGO’s) die de volken gevoelig maken en op
kritische wijze samenwerken, daarbij ook gebruik makend van wettige
pressiemiddelen, opdat iedere regering haar eigen en niet te delegeren
taak vervult het milieu en de natuurlijke bronnen van het eigen land te
beschermen zonder zich te verkopen aan twijfelachtige lokale en
internationale belangen.

CONSIDERACIÓN
En la historia de la tormenta en el lago, muchos guías espirituales han dado sentido a sus distintos elementos: la barca, la tormenta y su apaciguamiento. La barca es nuestro bote salvavidas, que a menudo se ve envuelto en la tormenta. El Papa Benedicto XVI vio en la barca y en la tempestad la situación de la Iglesia hoy. Quizá el sentido de esta historia es que, en medio de la tormenta, Jesús permanece inquebrantable y en todas las tormentas y vientos podemos y debemos confiar siempre en Él. Él navega con nosotros. Él puede calmar la tormenta.

PRIMERA LECTURA         Gén 19,15-29

Dios el Señor hizo descender del cielo azufre y fuego
que llovió sobre Sodoma y Gomorra.

En aquellos días,
los ángeles instaron a Lot a darse prisa y dijeron:
“Adelante, toma a tu mujer y a tus dos hijas ;
de lo contrario serás víctima del castigo de la ciudad.
Cuando Lot aún vacilaba, los hombres le prendieron
a su mujer y a sus dos hijas de la mano,
pues Yahveh quería perdonarlos,
y los sacaron de la ciudad.
Y cuando los hubieron sacado de la ciudad ,
uno de ellos dijo:
“Ponte a salvo ,
pues tu vida está en juego;
no miréis alrededor, no os quedéis cerca
sino huid a las montañas, no sea que perezcáis”
Pero Lot les dijo
“¡Eso no, Yahveh!
Ciertamente has sido muy bueno con tu siervo
y me has hecho un gran favor
al dejarme con vida ,
pero no puedo huir a las montañas.
Allí me alcanzaría la calamidad
y encontraría la muerte de todos modos.
Mira, hay una ciudad no muy lejos de aquí;
quiero huir allí;
es una ciudad pequeña.
Déjame refugiarme allí;
es pequeña de todos modos.
Y entonces saldré vivo”
Dios le habló:
“También en esto seré bondadoso contigo;
no destruiré la ciudad a la que te refieres.
“Ahora huye allí apresuradamente, porque no puedo hacer nada
hasta que hayas llegado allí”
Así es esa ciudad llamada Soar.

Tan pronto como salió el sol y Lot llegó a Soar,
Dios el SEÑOR envió desde el cielo azufre y fuego
que llovió sobre Sodoma y Gomorra.
Destruyó esas ciudades y toda la región
con todos sus habitantes y todo lo que allí crecía.
La mujer de Lot, que caminaba detrás de él,
se dio la vuelta y se convirtió en un trozo de sal.
Por la mañana temprano, Abraham fue al lugar
donde había estado con el Señor.
Miró a Sodoma y Gomorra
y toda la región del Jordán
y vio un humo que subía de la tierra,
como el humo de una fundición.
Así, al destruir las ciudades de aquella región de la tierra, Dios tomó
hizo caso al deseo de Abraham y permitió que Lot escapara,
cuando destruyó las ciudades donde había vivido.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

38. Recordemos, por ejemplo, los pulmones del planeta que están
rebosan biodiversidad, como el Amazonas y la cuenca fluvial
del Congo o los grandes acuíferos y glaciares. La
la importancia de estos lugares para el conjunto del planeta y el futuro
de la humanidad es de sobra conocida. Los ecosistemas de los
bosques tropicales tienen una biodiversidad de gran complejidad, que es
imposible conocer por completo, pero cuando estos bosques se queman
se les prende fuego o se arrasan para aumentar el cultivo
de productos , entonces en pocos años
se pierden innumerables especies o estas zonas se convierten en desiertos estériles.
Un delicado equilibrio urge, sin embargo, al hablar de
estos lugares, porque tampoco se pueden ignorar los tremendos intereses económicos internacionales
que, con el pretexto de cuidarlos,
pueden poner en peligro la soberanía nacional. En efecto, existen
“propuestas de internacionalización de la Amazonia, que
sólo sirven a los intereses económicos de las multinacionales”.
Es encomiable el compromiso de las organizaciones internacionales y no gubernamentales
(ONG) que sensibilizan a los pueblos y colaboran en una
cooperación crítica, utilizando también medios
de presión, para que cada gobierno cumpla con su propia e indelegable
tarea de proteger el medio ambiente y los recursos naturales de su propio país sin
proteger sin venderse a dudosos intereses locales e
intereses internacionales.

In the story of the storm on the lake, many spiritual guides have given meaning to its various elements: the boat, the storm and its stilling. The boat is our life boat that often does get caught in the storm. Pope Benedict XVI saw in the boat and the storm the situation of the Church today. Perhaps the point of this story is that in the midst of the storm, Jesus remains unshakable and in all storms and winds we can and should always trust in Him. He sails with us. He can calm the storm.

FIRST READING     Gen 19:15-29

God the Lord sent down from heaven sulphur and fire
rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah.

In those days,
the angels urged Lot to hurry and said:
“Forward, take thy wife and both thy daughters ;
otherwise you will be the victim of the city’s punishment.
When Lot still hesitated, the men seized himself,
his wife and both his daughters by the hand,
for the LORD wanted to spare them,
and they brought them out of the city.
And when they had brought them out of the city ,
one of them said:
“Get yourself to safety ,
for your life is at stake;
look not round, stay nowhere near,
but flee into the mountains, lest ye perish.”
But Lot said to them:
“Not that, LORD!
Surely thou hast been very good to thy servant
and have done me a great favour
by leaving me alive ,
but I cannot possibly flee to the mountains.
There calamity would overtake me
and I would find death anyway.
Look, there is a city not far from here;
i want to flee there;
it is a small town.
Let me take refuge there;
it’s small anyway.
And then I will make it out alive.”
God spoke to him:
“In this also I will be kind to you;
i will not destroy the city you mean.
“Now flee there hastily, for I can do nothing
until thou hast arrived there.”
So it is that city called Soar.

As soon as the sun had risen and Lot had arrived in Soar,
god the LORD sent down from heaven sulfur and fire
rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah.
He destroyed those cities and the whole region,
with all the inhabitants and all that grew there.
Lot’s wife, who was walking behind him,
turned around and turned into a lump of salt.
Early in the morning Abraham went to the place
where he had stood with the LORD.
He looked down at Sodom and Gomorrah
and all the region of Jordan,
and saw a smoke rising from the earth,
like the smoke of a smelter.
Thus, in destroying the cities of that region of the land, God took
heeded Abraham’s wish and allowed Lot to escape,
when He destroyed the cities where he had lived.

Always I have your love before me, Lord.

Search me, Lord, and test me,

On caring for the common home

38. We recall, for example, the lungs of the planet that are
are brimming with biodiversity, such as the Amazon and the river basin
of the Congo or the great aquifers and glaciers. The
importance of these places for the whole of the planet and the future
of humanity is all too well known. The ecosystems of tropical
forests have a biodiversity of great complexity, which it is
impossible to know completely, but when these forests
are set on fire or razed to the ground to increase the cultivation
of produce, then within few years
countless species are lost or these areas turn into barren deserts.
A delicate balance urges itself, however, when talking about
these places, because one also cannot ignore the tremendous international economic
interests which, on the pretext of taking care of them,
may jeopardise national sovereignty. Indeed, there are
“proposals to internationalise the Amazon, which
only serve the economic interests of the multinationals”.
Commendable is the commitment of international organisations and nongovernmental
organisations (NGOs) that sensitise the peoples and cooperate in a
critical cooperation, also using legitimate
means of pressure, so that each government fulfils its own and non-delegable
task of protecting its own country’s environment and natural resources
without selling itself to dubious local and
international interests.

OVERWEGING

De lezing van vandaag kan reeds op zichzelf beschouwd worden als een meesterwerk in de wereldliteratuur. Het is een prachtig staaltje van oosterse vertelkunst, en men kan zich zó voorstellen hoe men het verhaal vertelde bij de ingang van de tent. Maar we mogen niet bij het literaire blijven: het is tegelijk een verhaal dat toont wie en hoe God is: mild, barmhartig, vergevingsgezind. Een God voor mensen. Andermaal komt de verhouding van Abraham tegenover zijn God volkomen in het licht: gehoorzaam, onderworpen maar tegelijk eerbiedig vragend en bemiddelend pleitend. Ook in zijn houding komt een bepaald godsbeeld naar voor, dat in het Nieuwe Testament volledig doorbreekt.

 

EERSTE LEZING Gen. 18, 16-33

Gij zult toch de rechtvaardigen
niet samen met de boosdoeners laten sterven ?

Toen de mannen die Abraham te Mamre bezocht hadden
verder trokken, zagen zij in de diepte Sodom liggen.
Abraham ging met hen mee om hen uitgeleide te doen.
De HEER dacht:
“Zou Ik voor Abraham geheim houden wat Ik van plan ben?
Want Abraham wordt zeker een groot en machtig volk,
en door hem zullen alle volken van de aarde zegen ontvangen.
Ik heb hem immers uitverkoren
om aan zijn zonen en zijn nageslacht te leren,
dat zij zich door een rechtschapen en deugdzaam leven
aan de weg van de HEER moeten houden;
dan kan de HEER zijn plan met Abraham verwerkelijken.”
Daarom zei de HEER:
“Luid stijgt de roep om wraak uit Sodom en Gomorra op!
Uitermate zwaar is hun zonde!
Ik ga naar beneden om te zien,
of hun daden werkelijk overeenstemmen
met de roep die tot Mij is doorgedrongen;
Ik wil het weten.”

Toen gingen de mannen op weg
in de richting van Sodom.
De HEER bleef echter nog bij Abraham staan.
Abraham trad op Hem toe en zei:
“Wilt Gij werkelijk met de boosdoeners
ook de rechtvaardigen verdelgen?
Misschien zijn er vijftig rechtvaardigen in de stad;
zult Gij die dan verdelgen?
Zult Gij de stad geen vergiffenis schenken
omwille van de vijftig rechtvaardigen die er wonen?
Zoiets kunt Gij toch niet doen:
de rechtvaardigen samen met de boosdoeners laten sterven!
Dan zou het de rechtvaardigen vergaan als de boosdoeners;
dat kunt Ge toch niet doen!”
Zal Hij, die de hele aarde oordeelt,
geen recht doen?
En de HEER zei:
“Als Ik in Sodom vijftig rechtvaardigen in de stad vind,
zal Ik omwille van hen
de hele stad vergiffenis schenken.”
Abraham begon weer en zei:
“Mag ik zo vrij zijn tot mijn HEER te spreken,
ofschoon ik maar stof en as ben?
Misschien ontbreken er aan de vijftig rechtvaardigen vijf;
zult Gij dan toch om die vijf de hele stad verwoesten?”
En de HEER zei:
“Ik zal haar niet verwoesten, als Ik er vijf en veertig vind.”
Opnieuw sprak Abraham tot Hem:
“Misschien zijn er maar veertig te vinden.”
En de HEER zei:
“Ik zal het niet doen, omwille van die veertig.”
Nu zei Abraham:
“Laat mijn HEER niet kwaad worden,
als ik nog eens aandring:
misschien zijn er maar dertig te vinden.”
En Hij zei:
“Ik zal het niet doen, als Ik er dertig vind.”
Abraham zei opnieuw:
“Ik ben wel vrijpostig als ik bij mijn HEER blijf aandringen;
maar misschien worden er maar twintig gevonden.”
En de HEER zei:
“Ik zal de stad niet verwoesten, omwille van die twintig.”
Abraham zei:
“Laat mijn HEER niet kwaad worden,
als ik nog één keer spreek:
misschien zijn er maar tien te vinden.”
En de HEER zei:
“Ik zal de stad niet verwoesten, omwille van die tien.”
Zodra de HEER zijn gesprek met Abraham beëindigd had,
ging Hij heen,
en Abraham keerde naar zijn woonplaats terug.

TUSSENZANG     Ps. 103(102), 1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 10-11

De Heer is barmhartig en welgezind.

Verheerlijk, mijn ziel, de Heer,
zijn heilige Naam uit het diepst van uw wezen !
Verheerlijk, mijn ziel, de Heer,
vergeet zijn weldaden niet !

Hij is het die u uw schulden vergeeft,
die u geneest van uw kwalen.
Hij is het die u van de ondergang redt,
die u omringt met zijn gunst en erbarmen.

De Heer is barmhartig en welgezind,
lankmoedig en goedertieren.
Hij blijft niet voortdurend verwijten maken,
Hij is niet voor eeuwig vertoornd.

Hij handelt met ons niet zoals wij verdienen,
vergeldt ons niet onze schuld.
Zo wijd als de hemel de aarde omspant,
zo alomvattend is zijn erbarmen.

Ontvangt het goddelijk woord der prediking,
niet als een woord van mensen

Jezus sprak tot hem:
“De vossen hebben hun holen
en de vogels uit de lucht hun nesten,
maar de Mensenzoon
heeft niets waar Hij zijn hoofd op kan laten rusten.”
Een ander van zijn leerlingen zei tot Hem:
“Heer, laat mij eerst teruggaan om mijn vader te begraven.”
Jezus zei hem:
“Volg Mij;
laat de doden hun doden begraven.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis

37. Sommige landen hebben vooruitgang geboekt in een doeltreffend
behoud van bepaalde plaatsen en gebieden – op het land en in de oceanen
– waar ieder menselijk ingrijpen dat de oorspronkelijke samenstelling
ervan kan aantasten is verboden. In de zorg voor de biodiversiteit dringen
de deskundigen aan op de noodzaak om in het bijzonder aandacht te besteden
aan die gebieden die het rijkst zijn aan een variëteit van soorten die
minder veel voorkomen of een mindere graad van doelmatige bescherming
genieten. Er zijn plaatsen die een bijzondere zorg vereisen op grond van
hun enorme belang voor het mondiale ecosysteem of die belangrijke
waterreserves vormen en zo andere vormen van leven waarborgen.

Me permito llamar su atención sobre
la lectura diaria del Evangelio

Esta invitación quiere compartir contigo la alegría
del Evangelio. Todos, sin excepción,
puede experimentar esa alegría abriendo su corazón
al poder sanador de la palabra de Dios.

CONSIDERACIÓN

La lectura de hoy ya puede considerarse por derecho propio una obra maestra de la literatura universal. Es un bello ejemplo de narración oriental, y uno puede imaginarse cómo se contaba la historia a la entrada de la tienda. Pero no debemos ceñirnos a lo literario: es al mismo tiempo una historia que muestra quién y cómo es Dios: suave, misericordioso, perdonador. Un Dios para las personas. Una vez más, la relación de Abrahán con su Dios sale a la luz: obediente, sumiso, pero al mismo tiempo reverente, interpelante e intercesor. En su actitud también emerge una determinada imagen de Dios, que irrumpe plenamente en el Nuevo Testamento.

PRIMERA LECTURA            Gen 18,16-33

No dejarás que el justo muera
con los impíos?

Cuando los hombres que habían visitado a Abraham en Mamre
siguieron adelante, vieron a Sodoma yaciendo en las profundidades.
Abraham fue con ellos para despedirlos.
El SEÑOR pensó:
“¿He de ocultar a Abraham lo que pretendo?
Porque ciertamente Abraham se convertirá en un pueblo grande y poderoso ,
y por él recibirán bendición todas las naciones de la tierra.
Porque yo lo he elegido
para enseñar a sus hijos y a su descendencia
que mediante una vida recta y virtuosa
al camino del SEÑOR
entonces el SEÑOR podrá cumplir su plan con Abraham”
Por eso el SEÑOR dijo:
“¡Fuerte clamor de venganza se levanta de Sodoma y Gomorra!
¡Muy grave es su pecado!
Voy a bajar para ver
si sus obras corresponden realmente
con el grito que ha penetrado en mí;
Quiero saberlo”

Entonces los hombres partieron
en dirección a Sodoma.
Sin embargo, Yahveh seguía de pie junto a Abraham.
Abraham se acercó a Él y le dijo:
“¿De verdad con los malvados
destruirás también a los justos?
Tal vez haya cincuenta justos en la ciudad;
¿los destruirás entonces?
¿No perdonarás a la ciudad
a causa de los cincuenta justos que la habitan?
No puedes hacer tal cosa:
¡Deja que los justos mueran junto con los impíos!
Entonces los justos perecerían como los impíos;
tú no puedes hacer eso”
¿Él, que juzga a toda la tierra,
¿no hará justicia?
Y el SEÑOR dijo:
“Si encuentro en Sodoma cincuenta justos en la ciudad ,
perdonaré por ellos
perdonaré a toda la ciudad”
Abraham se puso en marcha de nuevo y dijo:
“¿Puedo ser tan audaz como para hablar con mi Señor ,
¿aunque no sea más que polvo y ceniza?
Tal vez falten cinco de los cincuenta justos;
¿destruirás entonces a toda la ciudad por causa de esos cinco?”
Y el SEÑOR dijo:
“No la destruiré, aunque encuentre cinco y cuarenta”
De nuevo Abraham le habló:
“Tal vez sólo se encuentren cuarenta”
Y el SEÑOR dijo:
“No lo haré, por causa de esos cuarenta”
Entonces Abraham dijo:
“No se enoje mi SEÑOR ,
si vuelvo a insistir:
tal vez sólo se encuentren treinta”
Y Él dijo:
“No lo haré, si encuentro treinta”
Abraham volvió a decir:
“Seré audaz si insisto con mi SEÑOR;
pero tal vez sólo se encuentren veinte”
Y el SEÑOR dijo:
“No destruiré la ciudad por esos veinte”
Abraham dijo:
“No dejes que mi SEÑOR se enoje,
si hablo una vez más:
tal vez sólo se encuentren diez”
Y el SEÑOR dijo:
“No destruiré la ciudad por esos diez”
Tan pronto como el SEÑOR terminó su conversación con Abraham,
se marchó,
y Abraham regresó a su ciudad natal.

El Señor es misericordioso y benévolo.

Glorifica, alma mía, al Señor
su santo nombre desde lo más profundo de tu ser
Glorifica, alma mía, al Señor,
no olvides sus beneficios

Él es quien te perdona tus deudas,
quien te cura de tus aflicciones.
Es Él quien te salva de la destrucción,
quien te rodea de su favor y misericordia.

El Señor es misericordioso y benévolo,
paciente y bondadoso.
No te reprende continuamente,
No está siempre enojado.

No nos trata como merecemos,
no toma represalias por nuestra culpa.
Tan amplia como los cielos abarcan la tierra,
su misericordia lo abarca todo.

Recibid la palabra divina de la predicación
no como palabra de hombres
sino como lo que en verdad es

Seguidme.

En aquel tiempo
cuando Jesús vio una gran multitud a su alrededor,
dio orden de irse al otro lado.
Un escriba se le acercó y le dijo:
“Maestro,
te seguiré adondequiera que vayas”
Jesús le habló:
“Las zorras tienen sus guaridas
y las aves del cielo sus nidos
pero el Hijo del hombre
no tiene sobre qué apoyar la cabeza”
Otro de sus discípulos le dijo:
“Señor, déjame ir primero a enterrar a mi padre”
Jesús le dijo
“Sígueme;
deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos”

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

37. Algunos países han avanzado en la
conservación de ciertos lugares y zonas -en tierra y en los océanos
– donde cualquier intervención humana que
pueda afectar a su composición original está prohibida. En el cuidado de la biodiversidad, los
expertos en la necesidad de prestar especial atención
a las zonas más ricas en variedad de especies que son
menos comunes o que gozan de un menor grado de protección efectiva
disfrutar. Hay lugares que requieren cuidados especiales en virtud de
su enorme importancia para el ecosistema global o que constituyen importantes
recursos hídricos y, por tanto, salvaguardan otras formas de vida.
