Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Uit de Jozefcyclus lezen we te weinig, het is daarom zeker aanbevolen het hele verhaal eens door te lezen. In de daglezing beginnen we met de komst van Jozefs broers naar Egypte om graan te kopen. Het hele opzet van het verhaal komt hier tot uiting: het is een verhaal dat zal uitleggen hoe de afstammelingen van de patriarchen in Egypte terechtkomen. Het maakt dus de verbinding tussen patriarchen en exodus.
EERSTE LEZING Gen. 41, 55-57 ; 42, 5-7a. 17-24a
Wij hebben dit ongeluk aan onze broer verdiend.
Uit het Boek Genesis
In die dagen kreeg heel Egypte honger
en het volk smeekte Farao om brood,
maar Farao zei tot alle Egyptenaren :
“Ga maar naar Jozef en doe wat hij u zeggen zal.”
Toen er honger was in heel het land,
stelde Jozef de hele voorraad koren ter beschikking
en verkocht het aan de Egyptenaren,
naarmate de honger in Egypte nijpender werd.
Uit alle landen kwam men naar Egypte
om bij Jozef graan te kopen ;
want de hongersnood woedde hevig in de hele wereld.
Zo kwamen Israëls zonen graan kopen, evenals vele anderen :
want er heerste hongersnood in Kanaän.
Jozef was degene die toen het land bestuurde
en aan al de bewoners graan verkocht ;
naar hem gingen de broers van Jozef dus toe
en zij bogen voor hem tot op de grond.
Zodra Jozef zijn broers zag, herkende hij hen,
maar hij maakte zich niet aan hen bekend.
Daarop liet hij ze voor drie dagen gevangen zetten.
Op de derde dag zei Jozef tot hen :
“Als gij in leven wil blijven,
doe dan wat ik nu ga zeggen,
want ik ben een godvrezend man.
“Als gij betrouwbaar zijt, laat één van uw broers dan achter
in het huis waar ge gevangen hebt gezeten ;
de anderen kunnen gaan en graan meenemen
voor de honger van uw gezinnen ;
maar gij moet uw jongste broer bij mij brengen.
“Dan zal de waarheid van uw woorden blijken
en zult ge niet sterven.”
Dat deden zij.
Ze zeiden tot elkaar :
“Helaas, wij hebben dit aan onze broer verdiend.
“Wij zagen hoe hij angstig om genade smeekte,
maar wij hebben niet willen luisteren.
“Daarom treft ons dit ongeluk.”
En Ruben zei :
“Ik had u toch gezegd,
u niet aan die jongen te vergrijpen ;
maar ge hebt niet willen luisteren.
“En nu zien we hoe zijn bloed wordt teruggeëist.”
Omdat zij zich van een tolk bedienden
wisten zij niet dat Jozef hen verstond.
Hij wendde zich van hen af,
en de tranen sprongen hem in de ogen.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 33(32), 2-3, 10-11, 18-19
Geef ons Heer, uw barmhartigheid,
zoals wij op u vertrouwen.
Eert de Heer met citerspel
en speelt voor Hem op de harp.
Zingt voor de Heer een nieuw gezang,
een schoon en schallend refrein.
Plannen van naties doet Hij teniet,
verijdelt wat volken beramen.
Eeuwig blijft staan het plan van de Heer,
wat Hij heeft beraamd geldt voor alle geslachten.
Maar het is God die zijn dienaars bewaakt,
hen die op zijn gunst vertrouwen,
dat Hij hen zal redden van de dood,
bij hongersnood hen zal voeden.

Gaat naar de verloren schapen van het huis van Israël.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Matteüs
In die tijd riep Jezus zijn twaalf leerlingen bij zich
en gaf hun de macht
om de onreine geesten uit te drijven
en alle ziekten en kwalen te genezen.
Dit zijn de namen van de twaalf apostelen :
als eerste : Simon, die Petrus wordt genoemd,
met zijn broer Andreas ;
Jakobus, de zoon van Zebedeüs, met zijn broer Johannes ;
Filippus en Bartolomeüs,
Tomas en Matteüs de tollenaar,
Jakobus, de zoon van Alfeüs,
Taddeüs, Simon de IJveraar
en Judas Iskariot, die Hem verraden heeft.
Deze twaalf zond Jezus uit met de opdracht :
“Begeeft u niet onder de heidenen
en gaat niet binnen in een stad van de Samaritanen ;
gij moet veeleer gaan
naar de verloren schapen van het huis van Israël.
“Verkondigt op uw tocht :
Het Koninkrijk der hemelen is nabij.”

Consideration
We read too little from the Joseph cycle, so it is certainly recommended to read the whole story. In the daily reading we start with the arrival of Joseph’s brothers in Egypt to buy grain. The whole purpose of the story is expressed here: it is a story that will explain how the descendants of the patriarchs end up in Egypt. It thus makes the connection between patriarchs and exodus.
FIRST READING Gen. 41, 55-57 ; 42, 5-7a. 17-24a
We have earned this misfortune from our brother.
From the Book of Genesis
In those days all Egypt was hungry
and the people begged Pharaoh for bread,
but Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians :
“Go and see Joseph and do what he will tell you.”
When there was famine in all the land,
Joseph made all the corn he had available
and sold it to the Egyptians,
as the famine in Egypt grew worse.
From all nations they came to Egypt
to buy grain from Joseph ;
For the famine was raging throughout the world.
So Israel’s sons came to buy grain, and many others :
For there was a famine in Canaan.
Joseph was the one who ruled the land at that time
and sold grain to all the inhabitants;
So the brothers of Joseph went to him
and they bowed down to him.
As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognised them,
but he did not make himself known to them.
So he had them imprisoned for three days.
On the third day Joseph said to them:
“If you want to stay alive,
do what I am about to say,
for I am a man that fears God.
“If you are of good faith, leave one of your brothers in the house where you were imprisoned.
The others may go and take grain
for the hunger of your families ;
but you must bring your youngest brother to me.
“Then the truth of your words will come out
and you will not die.”
So they did.
They said to one another :
“Alas, we have done this to our brother.
“We saw how he fearfully begged for mercy,
but we would not listen.
“That is why this misfortune befalls us.”
And Ruben said :
“I told you
not to harm the boy;
But you did not want to listen.
“And now we see his blood being claimed back.
Because they were using an interpreter
they did not know that Joseph understood them.
He turned away from them,
and tears welled up in his eyes.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 33(32), 2-3, 10-11, 18-19
Give us Lord your mercy,
as we trust in you.
Honour the Lord with the playing of the zither
and play for Him the harp.
Sing to the Lord a new song,
A fair and shining chorus.
He overthrows the plans of nations,
He foils the plans of nations.
The Lord’s plan shall stand forever,
what He has planned is for all generations.
But it is God who guards his servants,
those who trust in His favour,
that He will save them from death,
that in times of famine He will feed them.

Go ye to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

At that time, Jesus called his twelve disciples to him
and gave them power
to cast out the unclean spirits
and heal all diseases and afflictions.
These are the names of the twelve apostles :
first : Simon, who is called Peter,
with his brother Andrew ;
James, son of Zebedee, with his brother John ;
Philip and Bartholomew,
Tomas and Matthew the tax collector,
James, son of Alphaeus,
Taddeus, Simon the Zealot
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

CIVIC AND POLITICAL LOVE
228. Care for nature is part of a lifestyle which includes the capacity for living together and communion. Jesus reminded us that we have God as our common Father and that this makes us brothers and sisters. Fraternal love can only be gratuitous; it can never be a means of repaying others for what they have done or will do for us. That is why it is possible to love our enemies. This same gratuitousness inspires us to love and accept the wind, the sun and the clouds, even though we cannot control them. In this sense, we can speak of a “universal fraternity”.
