Consideration

Prayer and action are the two ground attitudes of every believer. When Moses has spoken with God in all intimacy, he descends into the world and friendly dialogue with God becomes the ground of his actions and speech. Prayer and action are not opposites; prayer is the source of our believing life, and therefore of our speaking and acting. That speaking and acting, living in the world, in turn feed our prayer. What I do in the world makes my prayer even more sincere, stronger, persistent.
Is prayer the source of my actions, and is my actions food for my prayer? Or does the balance (back?) need to be sought or restored?

FIRST READING:      Ex. 34, 29-35

Those who saw the radiance on the face of Moses
dared not approach him.

From the Book of Exodus

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two stone slabs,
the text of the covenant,
he was not aware that his face was shining
because he had spoken to God.
But Aaron and the other Israelites did see the radiance on Moses’ face,
and they dared not approach him.
But when Moses called them
Aaron and all the leaders of the community came to him.
Moses reported to them.
Then all the Israelites came to him.
He presented to them everything the LORD had said to him on Mount Sinai.
When Moses had finished his speech,
he put a cloth over his face.
And every time Moses went to the LORD to speak to him,
he took off the cloth until he came out again.
Then, when he came out,
to tell the Israelites what they should do, he did,
so as not to let the Israelites see the glare on his face,
the cloth over his face until he went in again to speak to the LORD.

INTERLUDIUM      Ps. 99(98), 5, 6, 7, 9

Holy is He, the Lord our God.

Glorify the Lord our God,
and prostrate yourselves before his footstool,
for He is holy.

Moses and Aaron were his priests,
Samuel was among his worshippers:

They listened to his commands,
to all that He commanded them.

Glorify the Lord our God
And prostrate yourselves before his holy mountain,
for holy is He, the Lord our God.

ALLELUIA    Mt 4, 4b

Alleluia.
Man does not live by bread alone,
but from everything that comes from the mouth of God.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL   Mt 13, 44-46

He went and sold all that he possessed and bought that field.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

At that time Jesus said to the crowd :
“The kingdom of heaven
is like a treasure hidden in a field.
“When someone found it, he hid it again
and in his joy went and sold all that he possessed and bought that field.
“Even so the kingdom of heaven is like
a merchant looking for beautiful pearls.
“When he had found a pearl of great value,
he went and sold everything he owned and bought it.”

On Care of the Common Home

Be praised my Lord

  1. “Be praised my Lord”, sang St Francis of Assisi. In this beautiful song of praise he reminded us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our existence, and like a beautiful mother who takes us in her arms: “Be praised, my Lord, for our sister earth, which feeds and guides us and produces various fruits with colourful flowers and herbs”.
  2. This sister is protesting about the damage we do to her, because of the irresponsible use and abuse of the goods God has put in her. We have grown up with the idea that we were her owners and lords, empowered to plunder her. The violence that is in man’s sin-wounded heart is also evident in the symptoms of disease that we see in the soil, water, air and living creatures. This is why our oppressed and devastated earth, which “groans and trembles” (Rom 8:22), is among the most abandoned and ill-treated of the poor. We forget that we ourselves are made of earth (cf. Gen 2:7). Our very body is constituted by the elements of the planet; its air gives us breath and its water gives us life and refreshment.
