Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

OVERWEGING
Voortbordurend op de lezingen van gisteren stellen we de vraag: hoe kunnen wij iets zichtbaar maken van Gods verbond met mensen? Het begint met een levenshouding: met de manier waarop wij met mensen omgaan. Of ze nu oud of jong zijn, of ze goed bezig zijn of juist verdwalen in hun dagelijkse zorgen; of we ze nu goed kennen of wanneer zij anders zijn, vreemd zijn: God dienen en trouw blijven wordt zichtbaar in onze omgang met al deze mensen. Elke dag opnieuw kunnen wij God dienen door mensen te dienen. Dan kiezen we, in de woorden van Jozua, voor de aanpak van de Heer.
EERSTE LEZING Joz. 24, 14-29
Als gij de Heer niet wilt dienen, kies dan nu wie ge wel dienen wilt.
In die tijd sprak Jozua tot het volk:
“Vrees dan de HEER en dien Hem oprecht en trouw.
Doe de goden weg, die uw voorouders
aan de overkant van de Rivier en in Egypte hebben vereerd,
en wees dienaren van de HEER.
Als gij de HEER niet wilt dienen,
kies dan nu wie ge wel dienen wilt:
de goden die uw voorouders
aan de overkant van de Rivier hebben vereerd,
of de goden van de Amorieten, in wier land gij woont.
Ik en mijn familie, wij dienen de HEER.”
Het volk antwoordde:
“Wij denken er niet aan de HEER te verlaten
en andere goden te vereren.
De HEER onze God heeft ons en onze vaderen
uit Egypte geleid, uit het land van de slavernij.
Hij heeft voor onze ogen
grote tekenen verricht en ons beschermd
op al onze tochten en tegen alle volken,
waarmee wij in aanraking kwamen.
De HEER heeft al die volken voor ons verdreven,
evenals de Amorieten die dit land bewonen.
Ook wij willen de HEER dienen, Hij is onze God.”
Toen zei Jozua tot het volk:
“Gij zult wel niet bij machte zijn de HEER te dienen,
want Hij is een heilige God, een jaloerse God,
die uw overtredingen en zonden niet vergeeft,
maar als ge de HEER verlaat en vreemde goden vereert,
zal Hij u met nieuwe rampen treffen en u vernietigen,
ondanks de weldaden die Hij u vroeger heeft bewezen.”
Maar het volk herhaalde:
“Toch willen wij de HEER dienen.”
Toen zei Jozua tot het volk:
“Dan zijt ge zelf getuigen,
dat ge voor de dienst van de HEER gekozen hebt.”
En zij antwoordden:
“Ja, dat zijn wij.”
En Jozua hernam:
“Doe dan die vreemde goden bij u weg
en geef u helemaal aan de HEER, de God van Israël.”
En het volk antwoordde:
“De HEER onze God willen wij dienen
en naar Hem willen wij luisteren.”
Zo sloot Jozua op die dag te Sichem een verbond met het volk.
Hij bepaalde voor hen wat wet is en recht,
en hij schreef alles op in het wetboek van God.
Daarop liet hij onder de eik
in het heiligdom van de HEER een grote steen oprichten
en sprak tot het hele volk:
“Deze steen zal tegen ons getuigen,
want hij heeft alles gehoord
wat de HEER tot ons gesproken heeft.
Hij zal tegen u blijven getuigen,
zodat gij uw God niet verloochent.”
Daarop ontbond Jozua de vergadering
en ieder keerde terug naar zijn eigen gebied.
Na deze gebeurtenissen stierf Jozua, de zoon van Nun,
de dienaar van de HEER, op de leeftijd van honderd en tien jaar.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 16(15), 1-2a, 5, 7-8, 11
De Heer is mijn erfdeel, mijn dronk uit de beker.
Behoed mij, God, tot U neem ik mijn toevlucht ;
Gij zijt mijn Heer, ik erken het.
De Heer is mijn erfdeel, mijn dronk uit de beker,
Hij heeft mijn lot in zijn hand.
Ik dank de Heer die mij altijd geleid heeft,
Hij spreekt ook des nachts in mijn hart.
Steeds houd ik mijn ogen gericht op de Heer,
ik val niet, want Hij staat naast mij.
Gij zult mij de weg van het leven wijzen
om heel mijn vreugde te vinden bij U,
bestendig geluk aan uw zijde.

Ontvangt het goddelijk woord,
niet als een woord van mensen
maar als wat het inderdaad is : het woord van God.

EVANGELIE Mt. 19, 13-15
Laat de kinderen begaan,
want aan hen die zijn zoals zij behoort het Rijk der hemelen.
In die tijd werden er kleine kinderen bij Jezus gebracht,
opdat Hij hun de handen zou opleggen
en een gebed over hen spreken.
Maar bars wezen de leerlingen ze af.
Jezus echter zei:
“Laat die kinderen toch begaan
en verhindert ze niet bij Mij te komen.
Want aan hen die zijn zoals zij,
behoort het Rijk der hemelen.”
En nadat Hij hun de handen had opgelegd
vertrok Hij vandaar.

19. Na een tijd van irrationeel vertrouwen in de vooruitgang en de menselijke vermogens, gaat een gedeelte van de maatschappij een fase van grote bewustwording in. Men neemt een groeiende gevoeligheid voor het milieu en voor de zorg voor de natuur waar en ontwikkelt een oprechte en pijnlijke bezorgdheid voor wat er met onze planeet aan het gebeuren is. Wij zullen op een ongetwijfeld onvolledige wijze de kwesties behandelen die vandaag bij ons onrust veroorzaken en die wij intussen niet meer kunnen verdoezelen. Het doel is niet informatie te verzamelen of onze nieuwsgierigheid te verzadigen, maar ons pijnlijk ervan bewust te worden dat wij de moed moeten hebben om in persoonlijk lijden te veranderen hetgeen er met de wereld gebeurt en zo te erkennen wat de bijdrage is die ieder kan leveren.

CONSIDERATION
Building on yesterday’s readings, we ask the question: how can we make something visible of God’s covenant with people? It starts with an attitude to life: with the way we treat people. Whether they are old or young, whether they are doing well or getting lost in their daily worries; whether we know them well or whether they are different, strange: Serving God and remaining faithful becomes visible in our dealings with all these people. Every day we can serve God by serving people. Then, in the words of Joshua, we choose the Lord’s approach.
FIRST READING Josh. 24, 14-29
If you will not serve the Lord, choose now whom you will serve.
From the book of Joshua
In those days Joshua spoke to the people:
“Fear therefore the LORD, and serve him truly and faithfully.
Put away the gods your ancestors had
across the river and in Egypt,
and be servants of the LORD.
If ye will not serve the LORD,
then choose now whom ye will serve:
The gods whom your ancestors
on the other side of the river,
or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell.
I and my family, we serve the LORD.”
The people replied:
“We do not think of leaving the LORD
and worshipping other gods.
The LORD our God has brought us and our fathers
out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
He has done great signs before our eyes
and has protected us
on all our journeys and against all the nations
with whom we came in contact.
The LORD has driven out all those nations before us,
and the Amorites who dwell in this land.
We too will serve the LORD; he is our God.”
Then Joshua said to the people:
“You may not be able to serve the LORD,
for He is a holy God, a jealous God,
who does not forgive your transgressions and your sins,
but if you forsake the LORD and worship strange gods,
He will smite you with new calamities and destroy you,
despite the benefits He has bestowed on you in the past.”
But the people repeated:
“Yet we want to serve the LORD.”
Then Joshua said to the people:
“Then you yourselves are witnesses,
that you have chosen the service of the LORD.”
And they answered:
“Yes, we are.”
And Joshua resumed:
“Then put away these strange gods from among you
and give yourselves entirely to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
And the people answered:
“The LORD our God we will serve
and to him we will listen.”
So Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day at Shechem.
He determined for them what is law and justice,
and he wrote it all down in the book of God.
Then he ordered that under the oak tree.
In the sanctuary of the LORD a great stone was set up
and he said to all the people:
The stone shall bear witness against us, for it has heard all that the LORD has spoken to us.
It shall continue to bear witness against you,
so that you may not deny your God.”
Then Joshua broke up the assembly
and each went back to his own area.
After these events, Joshua the son of Nun died,
the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten years.

19. After a time of irrational faith in progress and human ability, a section of society is entering a phase of great awareness. There is a growing sensitivity to the environment and to the care of nature, and a genuine and painful concern for what is happening to our planet. We will deal with the issues that are worrying us today in an undoubtedly incomplete manner and that we can no longer gloss over. The aim is not to gather information or to satiate our curiosity, but to become painfully aware that we must have the courage to change, in personal suffering, what is happening to the world and thus recognise the contribution that each of us can make.
