Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Mochten wij de lezing één vers vroeger beginnen, zouden we interessante biografische elementen krijgen. Uit zorg heeft Paulus Timoteüs naar Tessalonica teruggestuurd vanuit Athene, en nu komt deze terug met heel goed nieuws. Alles is in orde met de gemeente. Paulus zegt letterlijk dat hij weer opleeft. Hij ziet al uit om terug te keren en dat zal later werkelijkheid worden. Hier eindigt ook een eerste deel van de brief.
EERSTE LEZING I Tess. 3, 7-13
Moge de Heer u overvloedig doen toenemen
in de liefde voor elkaar en voor allen.
Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen
van Tessalonica
Broeders en zusters,
Om u, om uw geloof,
zijn wij met troost vervuld
bij alle dwang en druk die wij moeten verduren.
Wij leven weer op
nu blijkt dat gij stand houdt in de Heer.
Hoe kunnen wij Hem naar waarde danken voor u,
voor al de blijdschap
die gij ons bezorgt voor het aanschijn van onze God ?
Dag en nacht bidden wij Hem met de grootste vurigheid,
dat wij u mogen weerzien
en aanvullen wat aan uw geloof nog ontbreekt.
Moge Hij, God onze Vader, en onze Heer Jezus
ons de weg naar u banen.
En u moge de Heer overvloedig doen toenemen
in de liefde voor elkaar en voor allen,
zoals ook onze liefde uitgaat naar u.
Hij sterke uw hart, zodat gij onberispelijk zijt in heiligheid
voor het aanschijn van God onze Vader
bij de komst van onze Heer Jezus met al zijn heiligen.

Verleen ons van nu af uw rijkste zegen, Heer,
en laat heel ons leven gelukkig zijn.
Wat sterfelijk is vergaat weer tot stof,
Gij zegt : keer terug, kind van mensen !
Voor U zijn duizend jaren één dag,
als gisteren dat al voorbij is,
een uur van slaap in de nacht.
Leer ons onze dagen naar waarde te schatten
en zo te komen tot wijsheid van hart.
Laat af, Heer, hoe lang nog pijnigt Gij ons ?

Weest waakzaam !
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Matteüs
In die tijd zei Jezus tot zijn leerlingen :
“Weest dus waakzaam
want gij weet niet op welke dag uw Heer komt.
“Begrijpt dit wel :
als de eigenaar van het huis wist
op welk uur van de nacht de dief zou komen,
zou hij blijven waken en in zijn huis niet laten inbreken.
“Weest ook gij dus bereid
omdat de Mensenzoon komt op het uur
waarop gij het niet verwacht.
“Wie is dus de trouwe en verstandige knecht,
die de Heer over zijn dienstvolk heeft aangesteld
om hun op tijd het eten te geven ?
“Gelukkig die knecht
als de heer bij zijn komst hem daarmee bezig vindt.
“Voorwaar, Ik zeg u :
hij zal hem aanstellen over alles wat hij bezit.
“Maar is die knecht slecht en zegt hij bij zichzelf :
mijn heer blijft nog wel een poosje weg,
en begint hij de andere knechten te slaan
en eet en drinkt hij met dronkaards,
dan zal de heer van die knecht komen op een dag
waarop hij het niet verwacht, en op een uur dat hij niet kent ;
en hij zal hem vierendelen
en hem het lot doen delen van de huichelaars.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
31. Een grotere schaarste aan water zal een stijging van de kosten van levensmiddelen en verschillende producten die van het watergebruik afhankelijk zijn, ten gevolge hebben. Sommige studies hebben het gevaar gesignaleerd dat men binnen weinig decennia acuut te maken zal hebben met waterschaarste, als men niet snel maatregelen neemt. De milieu-effecten zouden miljarden mensen kunnen treffen en anderzijds is te voorzien dat de watercontrole door grote internationale ondernemingen verandert in een van de belangrijkste bronnen voor een conflict in deze eeuw.

Consideration
If we were to begin the reading one verse earlier, we would get interesting biographical elements. Out of concern, Paul sent Timothy back to Tessalonica from Athens, and now he returns with very good news. Everything is in order with the church. Paul literally says that he is alive again. He is already looking forward to returning and this will later become reality. Here ends the first part of the letter.

May the Lord increase you abundantly
in love for one another and for all.
From the first letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of

Brothers and sisters,
Because of you, because of your faith,
we are filled with comfort
in all the constraints and pressures which we must endure.
We live again
now that you stand firm in the Lord.
How can we thank Him for you
for all the joy
which you bring us before the face of our God?
Day and night we pray to Him with the greatest fervour,
that we may see you again
and complete what is lacking in your faith.
May He, God our Father, and our Lord Jesus
make possible for us the way to you.

At that time Jesus said to his disciples :
“Be ye therefore vigilant
for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
“Understand this :
If the owner of the house knew
at what hour of the night the thief would come,
he would keep watch and not let his house be broken into.
“Be ye therefore ready also
because the Son of Man is coming at the hour
when ye know not.
“Who then is the faithful and prudent servant,
whom the Lord hath set over his servants
to give them their food in due season?
“Happy is that servant
if the Lord find him at his coming engaged in this.
“Verily I say unto you :
He will appoint him over all that he possesses.
“But if the servant is bad and says to himself :
“My lord will be away for some time yet,

31. Greater scarcity of water will lead to an increase in the cost of food and the various products which depend on its use. Some studies warn that an acute water shortage may occur within a few decades unless urgent action is taken. The environmental repercussions could affect billions of people; it is also conceivable that the control of water by large multinational businesses may become a major source of conflict in this century.
