Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Niet door het onderhouden van de Wet maar door het geloof wordt de mens verlost. Paulus wil dat illustreren aan het voorbeeld van Abraham en wij lezen dit vandaag en morgen. De belofte van God tegenover Abraham was gave. Een gunst die men moet verdienen is geen gave meer. Maar een loon, zegt Paulus, is geen gunst, maar een recht. Zijn argument is zeer duidelijk: hoe kon Abraham op grond van de Wet gerechtvaardigd worden als die Wet pas eeuwen later gekomen is en als hijzelf niet eens besneden was? In de context van die tijd was tegen zo’n argument weinig in te brengen, maar het staat eigenlijk pas in de verzen die op de lezing volgen.
EERSTE LEZING Rom. 4, 1-8
Abraham heeft God gelóófd
en dat geloof is hem aangerekend als gerechtigheid.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome
Broeders en zusters,
Wat moeten wij denken van Abraham, onze stamvader ?
Wat heeft hij bereikt ?
Als hij op grond van zijn goede werken gerechtvaardigd is
heeft hij reden zich te beroemen ;
maar voor God heeft hij die niet !
Immers, wat zegt de Schrift ?
“Abraham heeft God gelóófd
en dat geloof is hem aangerekend als gerechtigheid.”
Welnu,
hij die werkt krijgt zijn loon niet toegekend bij wijze van gunst
maar als zijn verschuldigd recht.
Aan degene echter die niet werkt
maar gelooft in Hem die de goddeloze rechtvaardigt,
wordt zijn geloof als gerechtigheid aangerekend.
Hetzelfde geldt van de mens die door David wordt zalig geprezen
en aan wie God de gerechtigheid toerekent
zonder dat er sprake is van goede werken :
“Zalig zij van wie de ongerechtigheden zijn vergeven
en van wie de zonden zijn toegedekt.
“Zalig de man wiens zonde de Heer niet in rekening brengt.”
TUSSENZANG Ps. 32(31), 1-2, 5, 11
Mijn toevlucht zijt Gij, mijn redder in nood,
Gij hult mij in voorspoed en vreugde.
Gelukkig degene wiens fout werd vergeven,
wiens zonde door God werd bedekt.
Gelukkig de mens die geen schuld heeft bij God,
wiens hart geen misdaad verbergt.
Toen heb ik mijn zonde beleden voor U,
mijn schuld niet langer ontkend.
Ik sprak : voor de Heer beken ik mijn fout ;
toen hebt Gij mijn zonde vergeven.
Weest blij in de Heer, alle vromen,
verheugt u en jubelt, oprechten van hart.

Het werk van de Heer is goed en betrouwbaar,

“Niets is bedekt of het zal onthuld
en niets is verborgen of het zal geweten worden.
“Want alles wat gij in het donker gezegd hebt,
zal gehoord worden in het licht ;
en wat gij binnenkamers in het oor gefluisterd hebt
zal van de daken verkondigd worden.
“Tot u, die mijn vrienden zijt, zeg Ik :
Vreest niet hen die het lichaam doden,

81. Ook al veronderstelt de mens processen van evolutie, toch brengt het menselijk wezen een nieuwheid met zich mee die niet geheel is te verklaren uit de evolutie van andere open systemen. Ieder van ons beschikt op zich over een persoonlijke identiteit, die in staat is in dialoog te treden met de ander en met God zelf. Vermogen tot reflectie, redeneren, creativiteit, interpretatie, artistieke uitwerking en andere nieuwe vaardigheden laten een uitzonderlijkheid zien die boven het fysieke en biologische niveau uit gaat. De kwalitatieve nieuwheid die het ontstaan van een persoonlijk wezen binnen de materiële schepping inhoudt, veronderstelt een direct handelen van God, een bijzondere roeping tot leven en tot een relatie van een Jij tot een ander jij. Uitgaande van de Bijbelteksten beschouwen wij de persoon als een subject dat nooit tot de categorie van een object kan worden gereduceerd.

CONSIDERATION
It is not by keeping the Law but by faith that man is redeemed. Paul illustrates this with the example of Abraham, which we read today and tomorrow. The promise of God to Abraham was a gift. A favour that one has to earn is no longer a gift. But a wage, says Paul, is not a favour, but a right. His argument is very clear: how could Abraham be justified on the basis of the Law when that Law came only centuries later and when he himself had not even been circumcised? In the context of the time, there was little to argue against such an argument, but it is actually found in the verses that follow the reading.
FIRST READING Rom 4:1-8
Abraham believed in God
and that faith was imputed to him as righteousness.

Brothers and sisters,
What should we think of Abraham, our founding father?
What has he achieved?
If he was justified by his good works,
he has reason to boast ;
but before God he has none !
What does the Scripture say?
“Abraham believed in God
and that faith was imputed to him as righteousness.”
Well then,
he who works is not given his wages as a favour
but as his due.
To him, however, who does not work
but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly,
his faith will be credited as righteousness.
The same is true of the man whom David blessed
and to whom God imputes righteousness
without there being any good works:
“Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven
and whose sins are covered.
“Blessed the man whose sin the Lord does not reckon.”

81. Human beings, even if we postulate a process of evolution, also possess a uniqueness which cannot be fully explained by the evolution of other open systems. Each of us has his or her own personal identity and is capable of entering into dialogue with others and with God himself. Our capacity to reason, to develop arguments, to be inventive, to interpret reality and to create art, along with other not yet discovered capacities, are signs of a uniqueness which transcends the spheres of physics and biology. The sheer novelty involved in the emergence of a personal being within a material universe presupposes a direct action of God and a particular call to life and to relationship on the part of a “Thou” who addresses himself to another “thou”. The biblical accounts of creation invite us to see each human being as a subject who can never be reduced to the status of an object.
