Uitnodiging
Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Als dit alles voor Abraham geldt, geldt dit ook voor allen na hem. Niet alleen voor zijn nageslacht maar ook voor de heidenen, op voorwaarde dat ze geloven in Jezus Christus. Abraham is immers niet alleen de vader van de joden, maar van vele volken. De belofte geldt dus ook voor de geadresseerden van Paulus’ brief, zowel Joden als heiden-christenen. Abrahams geloof staat model voor het christelijk geloof.
EERSTE LEZING Rom 4, 13.16-18
Tegen alle hoop in heeft Abraham gehoopt.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome
Broeders en zusters,
De belofte aan Abraham en zijn nakomelingen
dat zij de wereld zouden erven
steunt niet op de wet
maar op de gerechtigheid van het geloof.
Daarom hangt die belofte af van het geloof
en dus van de genade
en is zij verzekerd voor heel het nageslacht,
niet alleen voor hen die de wet hebben ontvangen
maar voor allen die het geloof navolgen
van ons aller vader Abraham.
Van hem staat immers geschreven :
“Ik heb u vader gemaakt van vele volken.”
Hij is dit voor het aanschijn van God in wie hij heeft geloofd,
God die de doden levend maakt
en wat niet bestaat in het aanzijn roept.
Tegen alle hoop in heeft Abraham gehoopt
en gelooft dat hij vader zou worden van vele volken,
gelijk hem gezegd was :
“Zo talrijk zal uw nageslacht zijn.”

Voor eeuwig blijft Gods verbond van kracht.

Gij, kroost van zijn dienaar Abraham,
gij zonen van Jakob, zijn welbeminde.

wat Hij beslist geldt voor heel de aarde.
Voor eeuwig blijft zijn verbond van kracht,
wat hij beloofd heeft voor duizend geslachten.
De bond die Hij vroeger met Abraham sloot,
de eed die Hij Isaäk eens heeft gezworen.
De Heer was indachtig zijn heilig woord,
tot Abraham eenmaal gesproken.
Hij voerde zijn volk met vreugde weg,
zijn uitverkorenen onder gejubel.

“Ik zeg u :
ieder die Mij bij de mensen belijdt,
hem zal de Mensenzoon als de zijne erkennen bij Gods engelen.
“Maar wie Mij tegenover de mensen verloochend heeft
zal verloochend worden tegenover Gods engelen.
“Aan ieder die zich zal kanten tegen de Mensenzoon
zal het vergeven worden ;
maar hem die de heilige Geest heeft gelasterd
zal het niet vergeven worden.
“Wanneer men u brengt voor synagogen,
overheden en machthebbers,
maakt u dan niet bezorgd
over het hoe of wat van uw antwoord ter verdediging :
Op dat ogenblik zal de heilige Geest u leren wat gij moet zeggen.”

89. De schepselen van deze wereld mogen niet worden beschouwd als een goed zonder eigenaar: ” Gij spaart echter alles, omdat het van U is, Gij Heer, die al wat leeft bemint” (Wijsh. 11, 26). Dit leidt tot de overtuiging dat wij allen, als wezens van het heelal en geschapen door dezelfde Vader, met elkaar verbonden zijn door onzichtbare banden en een soort universele familie vormen, een verheven gemeenschap die ons aanzet tot een heilig, liefdevol en nederig respect. Ik wil eraan herinneren dat “God ons zo nauw met de wereld die ons omgeeft, heeft verbonden dat de woestijnvorming van de bodem als het ware een ziekte is voor ieder en wij mogen klagen over het uitsterven van een soort, als was het een verminking”.

Consideration
If all this is true for Abraham, it is also true for everyone after him. Not only for his descendants but also for the heathen, provided that they believe in Jesus Christ. After all, Abraham is not only the father of the Jews, but of many nations. The promise therefore also applies to the addressees of Paul’s letter, both Jews and pagan Christians. Abraham’s faith is a model for Christian faith.
FIRST READING Rom 4:13-18
Against all hope, Abraham hoped.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
The promise given to Abraham and his descendants
that they would inherit the world
is not based on the law
but on the righteousness of faith.
Therefore this promise depends on faith
and therefore of grace
and is assured for all posterity,
not only for those who have received the law
but for all who follow the faith
of our father Abraham.
For of him it is written :
“I have made you the father of many nations.”
He is this before the face of God in whom he has believed,
God who makes the dead alive
and who brings to life that which does not exist.
Against all hope, Abraham hoped
and believed that he would be the father of many nations,
as he had been told:
“So many shall thy seed be.”

89. The creatures of this world must not be regarded as goods without owner: “You spare everything, because it is Yours, O Lord, who loves all living things” (Wis 11:26). This leads to the conviction that all of us, as creatures of the universe and created by the same Father, are linked together by invisible ties and form a kind of universal family, an elevated community that encourages us to a holy, loving and humble respect. I would like to remind you that “God has linked us so closely to the world that surrounds us that the desertification of the soil is, as it were, a disease for each one, and we may complain about the extinction of a species, as if it were a mutilation”.
