Uitnodiging
Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Paulus worstelt verder met zijn theologisch probleem omtrent het jodendom: “Heeft God dan zijn volk verstoten?” Neen, dat kan niet. Het Oude Testament leert ons dat God trouw is ondanks menselijke ontrouw. Deze situatie kan slechts tijdelijk zijn. Hun misstap- bedoeld is de verwerping van Jezus – heeft de wereld verrijkt, heeft de heidenen binnen gebracht in de Kerk. Dus komen ze ooit terug (Paulus citeert heel vrij Jeremia) want de kern van het verbond is “God kent geen berouw over zijn genadegaven noch over zijn roeping”(vers 29).
EERSTE LEZING Rom. 11, 1-2a. 11-12. 25-29
God heeft zijn volk dat Hij heeft uitverkoren niet verstoten.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome
Broeders en zusters,
Heeft God dan zijn volk verstoten ?
Volstrekt niet.
Ik ben zelf een Israëliet,
van het geslacht van Abraham, uit de stam van Benjamin.
Nee, God heeft zijn volk dat Hij heeft uitverkoren niet verstoten.
Hebben de overigen zich dan zo gestoten
dat zij ten val zijn gekomen?
Dat niet, maar als gevolg van hun misstap
ging het heil naar de heidenen
opdat zij zelf jaloers zouden worden.
Als hun misstap de wereld verrijkt heeft
en hun falen voor de heidenen overvloed betekent,
wat mogen wij dan niet verwachten
als zij hun tekort zullen aanvullen !
Overschat uzelf niet, broeders.
Ik moet u een geheim openbaren :
de verharding die over een deel van Israël gekomen is
duurt slechts
totdat de massa van de heidenvolken is binnengegaan.
En zo zal tenslotte heel Israël gered worden,
volgens de woorden van de Schrift :
“Uit Sion zal de Redder komen
en Hij zal de goddeloosheid uit Jakob verwijderen.
“En dit is het verbond dat Ik met hen zal sluiten
wanneer Ik hun zonden heb weggenomen.”
Al staan zij vijandig tegenover het evangelie
-maar dat is uw winst –
toch blijven zij Gods vrienden krachtens zijn uitverkiezing,
omwille van de aartsvaders.
Want God kent geen berouw over zijn genadegaven
noch over zijn roeping.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 94(93), 12-13a, 14-15, 17-18
Nooit zal de Heer zijn volk verstoten.
Gelukkig de man die Gij wijsheid geeft, Heer,
die Gij in uw wet onderwijst.
Na kwade dagen geeft Gij hem rust
wanneer voor de zondaar het graf wordt gegraven.
Want nooit zal de Heer zijn volk verstoten,
zijn erfdeel geeft Hij niet op.
Eens zullen de rechters rechtvaardig beslissen
en alle rechtvaardigen vallen het bij.
Mijn ziel zou al spoedig, als God mij niet steunde,
voorgoed in het oord van de stilte zijn.
Wanneer ik reeds denk : nu struikel ik zeker,
dan houdt uw genade, Heer, mij overeind.

en wie zichzelf vernedert zal verheven worden.

Toen Jezus op een sabbat
het huis van een van de voornaamste Farizeeën binnenging
om er de maaltijd te gebruiken,
hielden zij Hem voortdurend in het oog.
Daar Hij opmerkte
hoe de genodigden de voornaamste plaatsen aan tafel uitzochten,
hield Hij hun de volgende gelijkenis voor :
“Wanneer gij door iemand op een bruiloft wordt genodigd,
ga dan niet aanliggen op de voornaamste plaats.
“Het zou kunnen zijn,
dat er door uw gastheer iemand is uitgenodigd
die voornamer is dan gij,
en dat degene die u en hem genodigd heeft u komt zeggen :
Sta uw plaats aan hem af.
“Dan zoudt ge vol schaamte de minste plaats moeten innnemen.
“Maar wanneer ge ergens genodigd wordt,
ga dan op de minste plaats aanliggen.
“Als degene die u heeft uitgenodigd dan komt
zal hij u zeggen : Vriend, ga wat hoger op.
“Zo zal u eer te beurt vallen
in het oog van allen die met u aanliggen.
“Want al wie zichzelf verheft zal vernederd,
en wie zichzelf vernedert zal verheven worden.”

CONSIDERATION
Paul continues to wrestle with his theological problem concerning Judaism: “Has God then cast out his people?” No, that is not possible. The Old Testament teaches us that God is faithful despite human infidelity. This situation can only be temporary. Their transgression – meaning the rejection of Jesus – has enriched the world, brought the Gentiles into the Church. So they will return one day (Paul quotes Jeremiah quite freely) because the core of the covenant is “God does not repent of his gifts of grace nor of his calling” (verse 29).
FIRST READING Rom. 11, 1-2a. 11-12. 25-29
God has not rejected His people whom He has chosen.
From the Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
Has God then cast out His people?
Not at all.
I myself am an Israelite,
of the lineage of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
No, God has not cast out His chosen people.
Have the others then so disowned themselves
that they have fallen?
Not so, but as a result of their error
salvation went to the Gentiles
so that they themselves might become jealous.
If their transgression enriched the world
and their failure means abundance for the Gentiles,
what can we not expect
when they will make good their deficiency!
Do not overestimate yourselves, brethren.
I must reveal to you a secret :
the hardening that has come over a part of Israel
will only last
until the mass of the heathen nations has entered.
And so, in the end, all Israel will be saved,
according to the words of Scripture:
“Out of Zion will come the Saviour
and He will remove the wickedness from Jacob.
“And this is the covenant that I will make with them
when I have taken away their sins.”
Though they are hostile to the gospel
-but that is your gain-
yet they remain God’s friends by virtue of His election,
for the sake of the patriarchs.
For God knows no repentance for his gifts of grace
nor of his calling.

Never will the Lord cast out his people.
Blessed is the man whom thou givest wisdom, O Lord,
Whom Thou dost teach in Thy law.
After evil days thou givest him rest

One day the judges shall rule justly
And all the righteous shall fall by it.
My soul would soon, if God did not support me,

who is more honourable than thou,
and the one who invited you and him comes and says to you:
Give him your place.
“Then you should take the least seat, full of shame.
“But when you are invited,
lie down in the least place possible.
“When the one who invited you comes
he will say to you, “Friend, go up a little higher.
“So you will be honoured
in the sight of all those who recline with you.
