Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Paulus somt de voornaamste geboden op. De belangrijkste schuld die we bij iemand kunnen hebben is de liefde. Andere schulden hebben grenzen. Liefde niet en die schuld kan dus nooit worden afbetaald. Wat meer is: de hele wet kan teruggebracht worden tot dat ene woord: ‘naastenliefde’.
EERSTE LEZING Rom. 13, 8-10
Liefde vervult de gehele wet.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome
Broeders en zusters,
Zorgt dat gij niemand iets schuldig zijt.
Uw enige schuld blijve de onderlinge liefde.
Wie zijn naaste bemint heeft de wet vervuld.
Want de geboden :
‘gij zult niet echtbreken, niet doden, niet stelen, niet begeren,’
en alle andere kan men samenvatten in dit ene woord :
‘bemin uw naaste als uzelf’.
De liefde berokkent de naaste geen enkel kwaad.
Liefde vervult de gehele wet.
TUSSENZANG Ps. 112(111), 1-2, 4-5, 9
Goed gaat het de man die weggeeft en leent.
Alleluia.
Gelukkig de man die ontzag heeft voor God,
die vreugde vindt in zijn geboden.
Zijn kroost zal machtig zijn in het land,
gezegend zal zijn het geslacht van de vrome.
Hij is voor de vromen een licht in de nacht,
weldadig, barmhartig, rechtvaardig.
Goed gaat het de man die weggeeft en leent,
die eerlijk zijn zaken behartigt.
Met mildheid deelt hij aan armen uit,
hij zal zijn gerechtigheid nooit verliezen.
Zijn macht en zijn aanzien vermeerderen steeds ;
de zondaar zal het met afgunst aanschouwen.

Niemand van u kan mijn leerling zijn
als hij zich niet losmaakt van al wat hij bezit.

Toen talloze mensen met Jezus meetrokken
keerde Hij zich om en zei tot hen :
“Als iemand naar Mij toekomt,
die zijn vader en moeder, zijn vrouw en kinderen,
zijn broers en zusters,
ja zelfs zijn eigen leven niet haat,
kan hij mijn leerling niet zijn.
“Als iemand zijn kruis niet draagt en Mij niet volgt
kan hij mijn leerling niet zijn.
“Als iemand van u een toren wil bouwen,
zal hij dan niet eerst
er voor gaan zitten om een begroting te maken
of hij wel genoeg bezit om hem te voltooien?
“Anders zou het hem kunnen overkomen,
– als hij de fundering heeft gelegd
en niet in staat is het werk tot een einde te brengen –
dat allen die het zien hem gaan bespotten en zeggen :
Die man begon te bouwen,
maar hij was niet in staat het einde te halen.
“Of welke koning zal,
– als hij tegen een andere koning ten oorlog wil trekken –
niet eerst overleggen of hij sterk genoeg is
om met tienduizend man het hoofd te bieden
aan iemand die met twintigduizend man tegen hem optrekt?
“Zo niet,
dan stuurt hij, als de tegenstander nog ver weg is
een gezantschap en vraagt om de vredesvoorwaarden.
“Zo kan niemand van u mijn leerling zijn
als hij zich niet losmaakt van al wat hij bezit.”

107. Daarom kunnen wij stellen dat aan de basis van veel moeilijkheden van de huidige wereld vooral de, niet altijd bewuste, neiging ten grondslag ligt om de methoden en de doeleinden van de technische wetenschap vorm te geven in een paradigma dat het leven van mensen en het functioneren van de maatschappij bepaalt. De effecten van het toepassen van dit model op de gehele, menselijke en maatschappelijke werkelijkheid constateert men in milieuaantasting. Maar dit is alleen maar een teken van het reductionisme dat het menselijk leven en de maatschappij in al hun dimensies treft. Men moet erkennen dat de door techniek geproduceerde producten niet neutraal zijn, omdat zij een netwerk scheppen dat uiteindelijk de levensstijl conditioneert, en de maatschappelijke mogelijkheden sturen in de richting van de belangen van bepaalde machtsgroepen. Sommige keuzes die louter instrumenteel lijken, zijn in werkelijkheid keuzes die betrekking hebben op een type maatschappelijk leven dat men wil ontwikkelen.

CONSIDERATION
Paul lists the most important commandments. The most important debt we can owe someone is love. Other debts have limits. Love does not and that debt can therefore never be paid off. What is more: the whole law can be reduced to that one word: ‘love of neighbour’.
FIRST READING Rom 13:8-10
Love fulfils the whole law.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Rome
Brothers and sisters,
Take care that you do not owe anything to anyone.
Your only debt is to love one another.
He who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law.
For the commandments :
You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,”
and all the others can be summed up in this one word :
Love your neighbour as yourself”.
Love does no harm to the neighbour.
Love fulfils the whole law.

he cannot be my disciple.

he cannot be my disciple.
“If any of you wishes to build a tower,
shall he not
first sit down to make a budget
whether he has enough to complete it?
“Otherwise it might happen to him,
– when he has laid the foundation
and is not able to finish the work –
that all who see it will mock him and say :
That man began to build ,
but he was not able to reach the end.
“Or which king will,
-if he wishes to go to war against another king –
not first consider whether he is strong enough
to face with ten thousand men
against one who comes against him with twenty thousand men?
“If not,
then when the adversary is still far away, he sends a legation
and asks for the terms of peace.
“Thus none of you can be my disciple
unless he cast off all that he possesses.”

107. We can therefore say that at the root of many of the difficulties of today’s world is the tendency, not always conscious, to shape the methods and purposes of technical science into a paradigm that determines the lives of people and the functioning of society. The effects of applying this paradigm to the whole of human and social reality are seen in environmental degradation. But this is only a sign of the reductionism that affects human life and society in all their dimensions. It must be recognised that the products produced by technology are not neutral, because they create a network that ultimately conditions lifestyles and directs social opportunities towards the interests of certain power groups. Some choices that appear to be purely instrumental are in fact choices that relate to a type of social life that one wants to develop.
